SPORTS Minister Chishimba Kambwili has said his ministry intends to build a 15,000 to 20,000-seater capacity stadium in Mongu at the earliest possible time as one way of taking development to Western Province.
This follows Republic President Michael Sata’s directive on Monday to Kambwili through Labour Minister, Fackson Shamenda, for the immediate construction of King Lewanika University and a modern stadium in Western Province as a way of honouring his campaign promises to the people of Western Province.
Reacting to the directive, Kambwili said he would take the order with the seriousness it deserves and would immediately set to work by engaging various stakeholders by setting up a working committee to start with the logistics like designing the planned state-of the-art piece.
Kambwili said he likes challenges and reiterated that he has never started a project in his career and failed, adding the people of Western Province would have a stadium delivered to them at the earliest possible time.
“I like challenges. I always live up to my promises and with the Mongu Stadium, I promise it will be done. I will immediately engage stakeholders to that we can come up with a design. We are looking at a 15,000-20 000 capacity stadium,” said Kambwili.
He said of the Livingstone Stadium which is earmarked for construction starting January 2013, that it is still on the cards, but at the moment Mongu was primary on the agenda.
“You see, Western province has been under-developed for a long time. If you go to Mongu or any part of Western province, you will find that there is no development. The PF government promised people of development in the area and this one is more urgent, so we will start with Mongu,” Kambwili said.

“at the earliest possible time” can be any time. Can the Minister be a little more specific
By the time this government is five years old, you will see how confused things will be in the nation which are done without planning.
Ba kambwili wz this thing budgeted 4,the idea is gud bt planning is pivotal 4 any system 2 effectively work out.HE we want yo prouncements to be formal bound,ur no longer in opposition were u jst wake up and pronounce things.we’re loosing grip in yo style of leadership.
Do Lozis eat football? Is that the most important thing they need. They need hospitals, schools, jobs, roads and housing fisrt.
iwe this will create employment for them. Building a University and a stadium will provide employment, more money for them to buy food and send money to sku. They need a university so that they can stop the nonsense.
Broaden up my friend! Stadia are not only meant for playing football only. The facility can be used for a lot of events that would be benefitial to the community. Think of conferences, talent search, Expos/exhibitions etc.
Command economics. The president gives orders and the ministers get cracking with immediate effect. I just wonder if the stadium and university were factored in the budget, or may be there’s a secret contingency funds for just such unplanned projects. But of course we have to assume the govt knows what it’s doing.
Govt. is a very serious institution. Indeed, Govt. knows what it is doing. And mind you, PF is action-oriented.
I am worried with the calibre of people around the president, atleast mcs can give the wildest excuse of not being schooled enough hence such hapzard governace but when the team aorund him comprising the educated and accomplished Chikwanda, self proclaimed PhD student miles sampa, prof luo, clive chirwa also thrown in this mix etc and you have such directionless governance you are forced to ask the question where all these people are who cant advise their pay master? Is it the perky allowances and opportunities that come with being in govt that has so blinded and dulled their mental faculties?
Stadiums before schools or reliable clean water? This PF govt must have its priorities upside down.
Misuse of US $750 million on non economic projects-stadium.What economic benefit will stadium bring to Western Province? What Western province is economic projects like Tertiary learning Institutions,Schools, libraries, referral Hospital, accessible to clean water and good road network.Once these are in place then think of stadiums at last.Do you want to give the stadium first so that they can be spend most of their time playing football in order for them to forget but their most pressing issues.PF please what are your priorities? This reasoning by the PF Government reminds of my friend who used to spend most of his salary on expensive clothing whilst still sleeping on a couch in his parents living room.
misplaced priorities. And who would be playing football in this stadium? because Lozi people dont know how to play football, not even how to kick a ball.
1. MCH please, a stadium is good but it is not a priority for Western Province right now.
2. We need a stadium in Livingstone more than Mongu.
3. The people of Mongu live in paper/sack/pastic houses, right in the town centre! I saw this just a few years ago. They have no roads and no access to clean water supply. These are the priorities, not what you are talking about!
4. Give them a cashew nut industry to provide jobs to the jobless youths who can only agitate for cessation due to joblessness and boredom.
5. If Mongu is messed up, how about the other towns there?
6. Any then you Kambwili also, your ministry should have plans of its own, don’t just dance to the tune of the president ala!
Stop making generalizations you id.iot! “The People of Mongu” don’t live in what you’ve described. People living in shanties do not constitute either “The People” of Mongu, Lusaka, Pretoria, Zambia or any other place. Not so long ago on the pictures there was a picture of Mongu houses , complete ones and others under construction!
You have a point but insults please! Anyway, they (insults) break no bones.
This is the stupidest thing l have ever seen, how does an unbugetted for stadium become a priority? And what a way of working, an order from the President in a news paper through another minister and a response immediately in the paper on the action, wow this is crazy!
Well this is exciting; Mongu ultra-mordern stadium before the Livingstone one and the King Lewanika University before the University of Luapula?
this is the stadium to be built in shangombo. Hahahahahahahahahaha!
What a priority?
Iwe gumugumu, where is the money going to come from?As sensible bloggers have said, priotise! Did westeners tell you that they need a stadium yet they do not have basics!! Go to Western and ask them what they need in order of priority! How do you buy a hammer yet you live in a rented house in chibolya!!! Go build the stadium in L/stone.rehabilitated the stadium in Mongu after 2 years!!
It would be interesting to know exactly how Shamenda relayed the information to Kambwili. He probably said: “Bawishi umfweni, twachiba naba mudala uluchelo ku State House. Batile mwambepo ukukula ichibansa ku bu Lozi mukwangufyanya.”That’s nonsense. There is a decent and standard way government business is conducted. That behaviour at State House was uncalled for. Declarations and publicity stunts are not what bring development. There is something in this world called ‘planning’.He wants to see a stadium standing “almost immediately”. Was the stadium budgeted for? In which year? At what cost? If it was planned and budgeted for, why is it only being announced at the end of the year? Where exactly in Western Province was it planned to be built? end quote……
this is what breeds corruption when people do things without budgeting and committing the country in what ever way the like. i would prefer that the development should be that of planning and not the political gimicks from what we are seeing . further western province does not need a stadium at the moment what it needs are road ,schools and electricity in most area which are under developed. Also the people of western province open up to private investment in terms of land allocation so that we see progress in the province.
Wrong priority, western province does not need a stadium but at least a Food processing plant for their crops, honey etc. Our current government needs to consult before engaging into an fruitful ventures. Who knows am sure the LOZI’S will not even appreciate the stadium. Ask them what they need. At least University we can support you but stadium no wayz.
All thyz projects coming up sounds swit bt lets plan and hav priorities otherwise kambwili wil fail 4 th first tym.
i think PF government is a confused government.the stadium is not necessary in western province. i support the university and the revamping of the cashew nut industry.just doing things un budgeted for is useless and unthinkable. Let me tell this pafwaka government, for as long as you dont ask the people what they want in western province, you will not succeed with your useless programmes, they will continue be pressing for cessation from zambia. Find a good way of resolving issues. not this way…..
IT IS NOT THE QUESTION OF KNOWING HOW TO PLAY FOOTBALL.LOZIS ARE PEOPLE LIKE ALL OF US.OUR NEEDS ARE THEIR NEEDS.BY THE WAY,THOSE WHO CRITICIZE EVERYTHING ARE THEMSELVES FAILURES BECAUSE DESPITE THEM NOT KNOWING HOW TO EVEN KICK THE BALL,THERE ARE STADIUMS OR PLAY GROUNDS WHERE THEY LIVE.UNLESS THEY TELL ME THEY ARE FROM SHANG,OMBO. SECONDLY,WHAT DO YOU PEOPLE MEAN WHEN YOU SAY ‘BUDGETING FOR.’ AND ‘PRIORITIES’? CAN SOMEONE TELL ME HOW MUCH THE GOVERNMENT BUDGETED FOR TOWARDS THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE LEVY STADIUM IN NDOLA AND THE THE NEW STADIUM UNDER CONSTRUCTION NEAR THE INDEPENDENCE STADIUM? YOU ARE DULL!
Iwe pushi don’t you remember that they planned for those along time ago, did they just wake up and start ranting like rats and command people to do things anyhow? You must think iwe Kolwe.
Look at this buffoon Kambwili blubbering on…how much is that 20,000 seater going to cost taxpayer? Is it a priority at the moment in the region? Will it create employment? Who is going to maintain it?
Western Province has vast investment opportunities one of them being the Zambezi-Shangombo Cashew Corridor which has large and suitable tracts of land (1.3 million ha) and suitable climate that is conducive to produce 250,000 tons/year with a turnover of $106m. In Europe a small bag of 100g roasted cashew nuts costs £3, this is a lucrative industry right there capable of creating limitless job opportunities. The first thing that comes to mind with our current crop of visionless leaders is creating pointless districts and a useless football stadium.
Wake up!!!
Ugly man
“SPORTS Minister Chishimba Kambwili has said his ministry intends to build a 15,000 to 20,000-seater capacity stadium in Mongu at the earliest possible time”. Jesus said, “I am coming back soon”. Wonder which happen first?
Are people in Mongu in dire need of a stadium? A University? How can you develop without a Strategy?

Is there a football league in Western province?
Let them build us a stadium where we shall celebrate our independence, by raising up our flag, and downing the colonialists Zambian flag.
hahahaha awa wahesu….lol
What is wrong with our leaders? A stadium in Mongu…for what? Better off buying equipment for Lewanika Hospital or Build houses for teachers in rural areas? Our public hospitals do not have MRI scans…for christ sake…..buy hospital equipment with that money. God have mercy on the docile Zambia population….! It is time to protest…….can anyone please challenge the authority…?
Then start a project in losing weight and being healthy!
We have an incompetent cabint which can even think through a business case.
Iye, i wanted to vote for Katongo, but wehn i visited the site, i was told ” you have already voted”????. So in 1994 Zambia National Team was the winner of the BBC award, so we have been there before
90 days! 90 days! 90 days!
May I know which project he has started as minister?
WHAT ABOUT LOSING MBOVU PROJECT.
“i have never started a project and failed” thats too much for kabwili when his project at high school was to go to university and he failed horribly. Shut your mouth you brat.
bUILD IT IT IN WESTERN PROVINCE OF YOUR zAMBIA, BUT NOT BAROSTELAND WAUMFWA CHIMAMBALA KAMBWILI?
This is crying shame! Is a stadium a priority for Mongu? There is so much else that could be done in social services and housing to improve the welfare of the people before the stadium.
Chimbwi no plan!
Building a stadium in Mongu is definitely a misplaced activity…not well thought through…A big Joke. I don’t think this is a need and its not even in the list of wants….I know that there is a long list of developmental activities for this town and a Stadium is probably not even among the top 30. What has gone wrong with the earlier proposal to build a stadium in Livingstone. Mongu needs a facelift first, road network, infrastructure, water supply, and the list is endless. Honourable Kambwili, you are a very hard working Minister and our prayer is that you do not expend your energies where it’ll profit only a little. Constructing a stadium in Livingstone, like yesterday, bwana Kambwili, makes plenty sense!!!! Lets think again before huge sums of money is wasted.
I hope MCS and Kambwili are listening.
Is this under the First Lady’s Budget? So you want to abandon the already approved Livingstone Stadium for a Mongu Pipe-dream? This is a failed leadership… Total lack of good judgement
