LCC to build market in Chalala next year

The Lusaka City Council (LCC) has said plans are underway to construct a market in Chalala to address the challenges being faced by residents in the area. This comes in the wake of calls from Chilenje residents on the council to construct a market for the people of Chalala.

The people of Chilenje argued that it was inconveniencing for them to buy from Chilenje market which they said was far away.

LCC Public Relations Officer Henry Kapata said the council was mandated to construct markets in the city and had earmarked Chalala for a modern market next year.

Mr. Kapata said government had shown a lot of interest to fund the exercise and the council had already identified two pieces of land in the area which would soon be decided on.

He however expressed concern over Chalala residents’ reluctance to submit street names to the council through their councillor. He said the council had instructed the people of Chalala to submit street names to the council through their ward councillor and show why they should be considered for a market but they have allegedly not done so.

Mr. Kapata has since reminded the residents to heed to the council’s instructions because naming of streets in Chalala would promote convenience and security.

And Mr. Kapata has said the council was not in charge of rebasing sensitization in markets even though it has the facilities to do so.

He revealed that most marketeers were approaching the council complaining of lack of sensitization on rebasing the local currency, a development he said the LCC was looking into and would pass on to the Bank of Zambia team which is in charge of rebasing.

  1. OK fine, but reluctance of the people to submit street names? Honestly, how many people even know this is being asked of them and now you call them reluctant?

I also like the “who me” approach to re-basing sensitization. If LCC has the facilities to do so and have been receiving complaints form marketeers, why not get off your backsides and lend BOZ a hand rather than say you will “look into” and “pass on” at this late date? Oh,I see…. this is just a statement to CYA so when this whole thing goes flop next week you can point fingers and blame someone else….kinda like the street names. Great!

And we wonder why Zambia never develops.

  2. Mr. Kapata, please let our counselor know the residents. We submitted the names of the streets. I still have the blue print copy. The philosophy we followed was to make our children and our residents the names of our traditional chiefs. Apart from Lawrence Chileshe rd named after our departed friend/early settler and the Mabwe rd all are named after Zambian chiefs paramount or small chiefs. Please get in touch on phone 0966887236 so that we iron up this security issue. I will re avail these names to the current counselor and yourself these proposed names. Let me use this opportunity to thank the council once more.

  3. What people in Chalala need are good roads. Maybe they will respond when they can see the roads that Mr Kapata is talking about.

  4. “…TO SUBMIT STREET NAMES TO THE COUNCIL…”
IS THIS THE RESIDENTS RESPONSIBILITY OR THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT? SO, IF THEY DON’T THEN NO MARKET? INDEED VERY SILLY CONDITION. AND IS IT NOT THE COUNCIL TO JUST BUILD MARKET TO DE-CONGEST THE ONE AND ONLY SOWETO MARKET IN LUSAKA AND EVEN MAKE LOCAL GOVT REVENUE FROM LEVY.?

  5. Ba Chalala, thats a great idea of Naming the streets after one of the first settlers,it’s humbling to see fellow people being recognised for the little effort contirbuted to the community.

  6. kapata also think of tarring the roads in chalala people have paid service charge and other charges, even a clinic must be built it’s far going to chilenje.please kapata
