Kitwe District Commissioner Elias Kamanga has appealed to Kitwe Residents that turned out to buy to buy plots from Kitwe City Council to exercise patience as the local authority is considering best ways of selling the plots.

Mr Kamanga says government has temporarily suspended the sale of the plots for the council to first service the area and also come up with the best system of selling the land to avoid the tendency where a few elite in society continue buying land over and over.

ZANIS reports that the Kitwe District Commissioner said this in an interview in Kitwe yesterday.

He said government wants to ensure that even the poor and all those that have never benefited in land acquisition are given chance to buy land.

He observed that the first – Come –first served system of selling plots which was announced in the council’s advertisement in the press was not the best way of selling plots as it does not give the local authority opportunity to screen the people buying to prevent the same people from buying land over and over.

Mr Kamanga added that after the auctioned area is serviced with money from central government, the prices of the plots will also be reduced to reasonable costs that would be affordable to the poor in society as well.

He assured that the money for servicing the area is available under the Land Development Fund at the Ministry of Lands.

He urged the council to quickly submit the estimates of the cost for servicing so that government releases the money quickly.

On Monday this week, Kitwe City Council advertised residential plots for sale in Ndeke and Chamboli areas.

Plots were pegged at K8 million for High Cost, K8 million for Medium Cost while the Low cost ones were going at K4 million.

But the sale was suspended due to the commotion that arose before the sale could start as a result of the overwhelming response from members of the public.

  1. High cost was K16m (KR16,000).
The best way to go is to begin thinking of computerizing the system and create a data base of who owns which land.
Next is to create a long term land plan for the entire Kitwe and open up large tracks of land in various areas at the same time. This should be done in collaboration with other councils so that people from e.g Mufulira don’t rush to Kitwe or vice-versa for plots.
Zambia has a lot of land we just need to have a better way of managing it so that it becomes accessible and affordable to all. We don’t want foreigners to be owning the best and largest pieces of land, it is recipe for Xenophobia.

    • the few plots left in Riverside are fetching as much as K80m – K120m. Price of plots has been grossly inflated by individuals who have made it their business to trade in plots.

  2. We need a modern way of buying. People should not gsther as though at a political rally.
Where is the application form system. How do you beat corruption with all this pressure and disorder?

    • Imagine! In the internet age! People queing up for plots! A mother was killed here when trying to enrol her chidlren for University of Joburg study. Its only after that the authorities realised they could have utilised computers for such applications. This year there has been no single incident of stampedes
