Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) is allegedly victimising some employees who leaked information to the media that 11 Zambian Senior Managers’s emplyment was terminated.

The alleged victimised workers claimed that management got incensed when information about the 11 Senior Managers that were fired last week was published and started questioning them on who leaked the information.

The workers said after media reports of dismissed workers, some employees were ordered to live the company premises immediately without giving them an opportunity to get their personal items.

And the affected workers who sought annomity wondered why KCM had taken such an action when expatriate workers, who were not affected in the purported downsizing were getting over US$ 17,000(KR371,000) on a monthly basis compared to what Zambians were getting.

They wondered why it was only Zambian senior members of staff who were affected and no expatriate was affected, if truly the termination of employment was based on a bid to reduce the labour force.

The dismissed workers also claimed that initially over 50 employees were supposed to be fired but after information leaked to the media, some workers have not been given their letters of termination of employment.

“We were questioned about who leaked the information to the media and we wonder why the so called reducing of labour force has only affected Zambians and not expatriates because some expatriates are getting alot of money as compared to what we are getting and yet it’s the locals doing most of the job,” they complained.

They further claimed that it was managements wish not to let Government and members of the public aware about the happenings at the mining company and appealed to Government to take a keen interest at the happenings at KCM.

KCM public relations manager Joy Sata was not available for a comment by press time.

And Chingola District Commissioner George Sichula said he had met KCM officials over the termination of employment of workers.

Mr Sichula said KCM management claimed that the Senior Managers were a liability and a cost to the company.

“I held a meeting with management and they informed me that they were paying the senior mangers a lot of money for doing nothing and that the workers were a liability to the company.

“What is happening here is sad because the mining company seems to be against the Patriotic Front policy of job creation and putting money in people’s pockets. This is a pro-poor Government but KCM is taking such actions independently and without informing us,” he said.

Mr Sichula said if the termination of employment for some senior members of staff was done in good faith, management would have communicated and would not victimise workers.

He said it seemed KCM management did not want to be exposed and warned that they cannot do anything without Government being aware of their actions.

Mr Sichula urged KCM and other private institutions to be concerned with the welfare of workers and not just to be interested in making profits.

Last week, Sources at KCM said about 11 senior managers in full time and pensionable employment at were fired without management giving clear reasons as to why they had taken such an action.

It was alleged that senior members of staff were fired in a bid to ‘reduce the labour force’ a move which had created uncertainty among the remaining workers.

  1. The problem is not with KCM or any other company but the government, the owners of companies have all the rights to hire and fire. if you want to empower people as you claim invest in the local people to start up businesses and other entrepreneurial activities rather than expecting foreign companies to do your Job.

Am shocked that the very educated people who were in management position don’t have brains to start up some thing of their own but are crying for silly Jobs!! when are you going to wake up? leave KCM alone. In Zambia the loan conditions stinks, citizen empowerment funds process sucks… it is so difficult if not impossible to access the funds. How do you expect your people to be empowered by getting Jobs from foreigners instead of creating their own Jobs and for others?…

    • when one door closes another opens….surely no need to cry, come up with ideas, am sure you have learnt something from working for kcm..start something of your own in the same industry…

  2. Cawamila Galu Kuluma Mbuzi. When the general workers are retrenched the snr managers go mute. It is now their time to dance PELETE.

    • Especially Mouldline Mulilo. He was a very self centred money jah. He never allowed any of his surbodinates to think outside the box. The man was sell fish indeed. Cawamila Galu Kuluma Mbuzi!! Lelo Moudline, the same general workers you were looking down upon are now speaking for you. The only senior i have great respect for in Dr. Sixtus Mulenga. The man is indeed a man! Not abashala ati ba Obinon Kalela, Ba Richmond Manga nabambipo who can’t even protect their surbodinates even from cocroaches.

  4. One Indian Manager getting a Salary of five Zambian Managers and when it comes to redundancies you chop off the five and live the Indian, what cost serving measure is that. Thats crazy stuff. Fire the indian and you serve. Their strategy is jow can they falsify figures so that they pay less tax. Firing 5 will seal leakage of their stealing tacticts. Its a weird world of bisiness.

  5. Mr Sichula said KCM management claimed that the Senior Managers (i.e. Mouldline Fire and the rest) were a liability and a cost to the company.

    • That is the cost we are paying the Govt should ament the law period equal pay here in the UK we get the same Salary nothing like expatriate conditions.Plse leave our Br Mulilo he is a Hard working man

  6. I have a feeling that one day, Copperbelt, Chingola and Chililabombwe in particular will soon become GHOST Towns, just as Luanshya Mine became, becoz of these so called Indian Investors. These Bamwenye don’t know Mining, they are all good at Account for every kwacha and ngwee and not Investing back. They are DIRTY They REPAIR wornout Infrastructures……..Our PF govment should wake up and look widely, becoz our country is sinking slowley by slowley .Bamwenye are coming pa ZED like migrating cocroaches…..why??????……they have seen free Copper and other minerals, just lying around from poor country- Zambia. Please… Please govment, chase these Suckers!!!!!!!!!! BRING IN INVESTORS WHO HAVE HEARTS FOR A POOR ZAMBIAN.

  7. who cares about these so called senior managers? they are the same people who have been informers (muzungu wanga rather mwenye wanga) against fellow Zambians, advising mwenyes not to increase salaries for locals as well as reporting alleged corruption cases for their enemies to be dismissed. let them go so that it remains a lesson to the remaining few! nature is always fair at the end of the day.

    • Hold your breath Sir they are Zambians they deserve respect in fact I know majority of them they are very productive they know mining better than the so called expatriates

  8. These chaps have been in employment for years and thinking of business for them is a nightmare. They are used to sleeping and getting a salary at the end of the moon

    • In the name of Jesus the son of the living GOD, I command the sacked Managers to regroup and form a company bigger than Vendetta.

      Amen

  9. where is the news which says KCM employed so may managers/workers daily ? everyday people are recuited ,some resign over period of time , some leave, some are promoted , some are posted out of zambia in different group companies ,some retire in mines – it does seem there is no other report remaining but to come with any news , this is internal matter of running a company

  10. i am looking forward to a day when we will get economic freedom in this country coz we are economically enslaved. there is no one to protect thiz desperate managers, because the economy is not in our hands.. dammn

  11. Shame on Maketula….not sure what he has against MM. It is unwise to celebrate someone’ s misfortune. Don’t have a union you subscribe to to look after your interests?

  12. The reasons why Mangers are being fired are: Managers are corrupt, they have given themselves contracts, they buy equipment which is not supposed to be in the plant area (check at the stores shed). In other words they have looted KCM. These same managers have built mansions beyond their reach (K900, 000, 000 worth of mansions).
Some buses hired by KCM belong to these managers but the have not declared their businesses which is against the company policy.

  13. Manish is the devil’s advocate. not even the so called CEO JJ can touch him. I am informred by highly placed sources in the company that one of his KPAs on his $40 000 monyhly salary is to reduce the number of black managers in preference to the indians. that is why the payroll is now being done by Vinay an indian. to hide indians salaries. And all this is happening under VP HCm David kaunda’s fat nose. Zambians wake up you are being used!! no wonder some people are giving silly comments in support of the indians. mwanya bonse mukaya ngatamuchenjele!

  14. Its true, these managers dont support their surbodinates in terms of salary increments, working hours, safety etc. Bamuzungu anikonde imwe. u c what has happened now. am glad my boyfriend is not affected.

  15. we don’t have any where to bribe the way we used to bribe MMD so we are spending too money buying equipment which we used to get free
