Zanaco have been booted out the 2013 CAF Champions League by Orlando Pirates of South Africa.
The Zambian champions lost 2-1 at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg to bow out 3-1 on aggregate in the first round.
Pirates took the lead in the 18th minute through Khethowakhe Masuku who struck the net with a long range shot to see the hosts take a 1-0 lead into the break.
Zanaco kept their slim hopes alive in the 48th minute when Musonda Mwape equalised.
The visitors will feel a little hard done by after Zenzo Meyiwa fumbled to collect a long-range and seemingly collected the ball across the line.
However in the 77th minute, Mpho Makola made sure of Pirates passage to the second round with a superb free kick.
Pirates awaits to host the winner of the TP Mazembe-Mochudi Centre Chiefs in a second round, first leg match on April 20.
Mazembe and their guests from Botswana play on Sunday in Lubumbashi with the DR Congo Club leading 1-0 from the first leg played on March 16 in Gaborone
When we tell you grass roots football is dead in Zambia this is what we mean, ZANACO are the champions…last year it was another club – Power Dynamos humiliation at the hands of TP. And our FAZ is forever enriching RSA football sector by camping our national team there abandoning home and you wonder why we perform poorly. Replicate those selfsame facilities in RSA in Zambia so all these clubs can benefit from the expertise.
It’s because of their GOALGIVER known as Racha Kola. Generally, I don’t think they are a bad side.
Expected and accepted. Sad as the loss may be, Zanaco’s performance mirrors in graphic detail the level of our game in Zambia. The Bankers should have taken advantage of homeground in the earlier fixture to put the game beyond Pirates but in that game they showed naked lack of requisite competencies to play Continental football.
For now Zanaco should put this loss and ejection behind them. Let them concentrate on the MTN Super league. May be, just may be they could win this years local league and have another go at Caf Champions league next year.
Hard luck!
ine naalinaka naba ZANACO they are time wasters who do not learn,…. they do not even play zambian style. If GBFC (those days), Power or Zesco represent zambia u can tell they are playing zambian football, ZANACO…..its another style…..sorry they deserve to lose.
Technically, Zambian coaches are bad. This is why this kind of disgrace in football will continue. Honestly, it is unacceptable to have such poor results with good sponsorship and a hard working sports minister like Hon. Chishismba Kambwili.
Mbesuma scored for Zanaco?
I underrated ZANACo, haaaa they are good, they even managed to score past Orlando pirates? They lost just 2-1? Haaaaa Zanaco bakali. Its time South African international players started get signed in Zambian leugue.
A Zambian boxer dies yet no mention about it in Zambia what a country!!!
@Chillls, ZWD has that mews.
Shame!
Chills there was no mention of this Zambian boxer when he was alive. He is only being called Zambian now that he has died an embarrassing death.
Thanks sopho
Pirate is full of international players and Zanaco all local players. It was like all star Vs Zanaco. We have to praise them.
Which Boxer died????
Boxer died yesterday here in England. He was basically a Londoner who was born in Zambia. He was in the ring on 31/03/13 the fight was stopped for health and safety reasons, this was after he collapsed in the ring,he has been in hospital since then and met untimely death yesterday. His name was Micheal Norgrove aged 31.To me this name is not Zambian.
Mhsrip
Good riddance. Save some tax payers money via shares owned in the bank
Zambian football is not as bad as it may appear….even our teams are not performing to their potential…… I don’t know what really happened…..because the football from the southern region of Africa (South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Angola, DRC) is not as strong as it once was….we fell so far from the glory days of the 90s……We use to whip those north african teams with on a regular basis…i think local football in all the leagues is in a process of revival, if I am not mistaken…..
South Africa may have the best facilities, but we no longer nurture local talent like we use to…
we have the talent in Zambian football the only problem is that football is not taken as serious as in other countries, just look at the salaries of Zambian local players at there respective teams, they cant earn a decent living with it so they have to look for altenative sources.they cant put all their minds on football because if they do, they will starve

Chills I’ve never heard of that boxer ! And, mind you , I’m a keen boxing follower ( Zambian or non-Zambian ) ! Sorry !
Zanaco coach was complaining about other teams being reluctant to sell him players ! Why should they ? It’s actually the players themselves who don’t want to go to Zanaco ! Other teams now have sponsors also ( eg Warriors , Nkana , Kalulushi ) , so the days of players flocking to Zanaco are now over ! The playing field is level !
Even big big team lose. It is only in Africa where when a team loses, a countrie’s development is questioned. Pirates’ win does not mean that RSA has better players than Zambia, as SADC region we need to aim to beat those West and North Africans, as Africa we need to win the World Cup.
