A metal leak at the Flash Smelting Furnace at Konkola Copper Mines has forced interruption of operations at Zambia’s largest copper mine.

KCM Spokesperson Joy Sata confirmed in a statement that the metal leak occurred at about 17:15 hours yesterday through the side wall.

Mrs Sata said investigations are underway to assess the cause of the incident.

She said all emergency protocol worked as planned and that all miners at the Smelter were assembled accordingly and no one suffered any injury at all.

Mrs Sata said assessments of the repair works are in progress and will be known in the next 24hours and that the next update will be given by Monday.

  1. Strange? How is KCM defensive when it has reported a misfotune, let’s be fair. This is a big investment that genuine Zambians must feel sad when there are things like this. Wish KCM the best.

  2. New Furnace already leaking! Bloody Indians too much shoddy work and being paid hefty salaries! They don’t even want to go back to Bombay or is it Madras. I wonder if that ***** Rajesh Luhadhia is still the engineering manager. Many qualified staff mostly Zambians and a few Indians have left due to constant frustrations.

    • interesting that you express such strong sentiments about the indian manager – your avatar is obviously not zedian, how would you like for someone to express negative sentiments about you based on your color or country of origin? Its best to deal with the issues at hand and if you think that this manager is doing a bad job, say so and avoid attacking his heritage. Racism, tribalism etc are never appropriate at any time or against any group of people, please.

    • @Really I suppose your avatar must be Indian.I have worked at KCM before and I know what I am talking about. Ask any Zambian who has worked for the Indians and they will tell you. You know nothing about the behavior of Indians in that company.

  3. Have we now lost a sense of empathy in this country. Why so much grief even on issues that must unite us? I thought we need to wish KCM well and wait for a full report before blaming anyone

  4. First Tuttikorin smelter….now Chingola smelter. Akombaetwa’s statement to the Financial Times of London in 2006…..are finally coming through. He is an experienced guy. Trained here in Luanshya.

  5. It is not strange to have metal leaks at the furnance. It happen from time to time. At nkana we use to call it runaway.

    • A runaway is not a leakage. It simply means the tappers have failed to shut the tap hole due to high pressure in the furnace. I have worked in Both Nkana and Nchanga smelters. I can tell you about the reverbs, CT and flash dryer, PS converters and anode casting wheel.

  6. Issues must dealt accordingly, fear to say it out when you see a problem is cowardness, wherever you will run to,’FLUASTRATIONS’ are part and parcel of life, how many times are you going to run,let solve the problem at KCM,later find the solutions to why Zambians are complaining or running away from KCM.

  7. ANYONE WHO HAS WORKED AT KCM KNOWS HOW STUPID AND FOOLISH INDIANS ARE, COUNTRY MEN PIPO ARE FRASTRATED AND TO MAKE MATTERS WORSE THE GOVERNMENT HAS BEEN CORRUPTED AND THEY ARE QUITE AS THOUGH ALL IS WELL.
