Welcome to Chipata

Paramount Chief Mpezeni of the Ngoni People in Eastern province has appealed to government to consider transforming Chipata into a City.

Chief Mpezeni said if Chipata is transformed into a City, there will be speedy development in his area and more people will benefit from such developments.

Chief Mpezeni told the Republican Vice President, Dr. Guy Scott that his people have so many challenges which need to be addressed by government as soon as possible.

Chief Mpezeni added that his people are willing to work with the ruling Patriotic Front (PF) government to ensure that Chipata is put on the agenda to be developed.

The Paramount Chief has also appealed to government to ensure that they deploy more police officers to the area ahead of the forthcoming July 25th Chipata Central Parliamentary By-Elections in order to curb violence.

Meanwhile, Vice President, Dr. Guy Scott, has assured the Chief Mpezeni that government will ensure that Chipata is developed.

Dr. Scott says the PF is a caring government that does not segregate but works with a passion of developing the nation.

    • @Ndobo:
The term ‘Boma’ is not used in defining the status of a district. There are only three (3) statuses for councils used in Zambia: (i) District Council, (ii) Municipal Council and (iii) City Council. Currently, we only have four Cities in Zambia (L/stone, Kitwe, Ndola and Lusaka). All the other towns (i.e. all provincial centres and Luanshya, Chingola, Chilalbombwe, Mufulira, Kabwe, Mumbwa, Mongu, Choma, Monze, Mazabuka, Kafue, etc) are Municipals, while the rest, mostly rural councils are ‘District Councils’. Mpezeni is therefore right to say Chipata is not yet a City…

    • I don’t think Chipata would be considered as a town in America let alone a city. Yes the paramount chief is right.

    • Zambia only has 4 cities at the moment – Lusaka, L/Stone, Ndola & Kitwe. The rest do not have city status. The difference between a city and district is in the powers for decision making. Its high time Zambia accorded city status to most districts. In some countries, some places they call cities are much less developed than Chipata, Solwezi, even Mazabuka.

  1. Chipata is being turned into a shanty town by its corrupt council. The planning is simply pathetic. Its a very small town yet it has about 8 shanty compounds and the buildings a very close to the roads in most areas- even the Umodzi Highway itself!
When u visit downs shops there is literally no adequate parking space. Trucks and all vehicles park on the roads. It will be the most ugly city apart from its scenery.

  2. This illiterate Mpezeni whose ribs you can count from a distance of 10 meters even if he wears a jacket , whose life heavily depends on ARVs, a criminal rapist and child molester , a drunkard of a chief, greedy and shameless puppet must understand that cities are not created by way of political pronouncement and that cities not create development for all residents especially if they do not want to go to school like him. MWE BAKU CHIPATA mutisebenya maningu na kamfumu kanu kosila

  3. Cities are according to population and facilities. In Zambia at one time cities had to have 300,000 people or over. They also had to have international airports. I dont think Chipata qualifies whatever its populace. Solwezi is more likely to become a city in the near future than Chipata. However, these towns need looking after. All those dusty roads like in the picture above should be wiped out of the landscape. Lets have decent looking abodes fit for humans. The Chipata municipal council can tackle that. Cant they?

    • Umwina zed is actually right. When Kitwe was given the city status it was because of population and it’s 2 airports at the time. They were both controlled from Ndola international airport so Kitwe technically had intl airport facilities.

  4. Chipata does not need city status, what it needs is some sanity. It is becoming more dirty by the day & encroachment of the Great East Road by both pedestrians, cyclist & illegal cabs make it unbearable. As one author pointed out, Mpezeni should be more concerned with educating his people by setting an example himself, womanising & drinking is not going to benefit the people, let the children go to school rather than herding cattle in Feni. The council is inept & corrupt, vast pieces of land are held by people who can’t develop the land, a case of knowing the ‘right people!’ Clean Chipata and it’s office bearers before you even think of calling it a city.
