United Party for National Development President, Hakainde Hichilema has written to President Michael Sata to remind him on the commitment he made to reform the judiciary.

Mr. Hichilema says the PF Government seems to have abandoned the pledge for judicial reforms.

He says what is obtaining now; 22 months after the PF came to power suggests that there is more rot in the Judiciary than at any other time in the history of Zambia.

The UPND leader says he has noticed with great concern that Acting Chief Justice Lombe Chibesakunda has been acting for more than a year, which should not be the case.

Mr. Hichilema has reminded President Sata that the select committee of parliament appointed by the Speaker, comprising of all political parties rejected the appointment of Justice Chibesakunda.

He adds that Zambians will not have confidence in the judiciary whose head is there illegally.

And UPND Deputy Secretary General, Kuchunga Simusamba says threats of contempt of court by acting registrar and director of court operations, Chilombo are a hindrance to the country’s democracy.

Mr. Kuchunga says the Judiciary, like any other arm of government is a public institution and must be open to public scrutiny.

He says judicial officials are public figures and there is nothing wrong for members of the public to express their own opinions on matters of great national importance.

  1. As much as I I’m not an HH fan, he has really backed on something important here, and it is surprising that our so called president is failing to answer the question, that zed pipo are asking.

  2. I hereby more than ordinarily expected agree with HH that in order to deescalate the tensions and dis-satisfactions among the constituencies in Zambia, the selection process of judicial officials has to be transparent and the public should be permitted to have an influential contribution. If this culture does not take root in Zambia then the independence of the judiciary will not be realized and this has the potential to undermine the so-called democratic culture which supposedly exist in that country. The public should not wonder as to what the role of the judiciary is or who decides what role of the judiciary should be, but ought to respect the decisions of the judiciary. The three arms of the government ought/must be independent of each other even though their roles overlap.

  3. U are the same pipo that have been defending Judge Musonda and his other two coleagues who are supposed to face the tribunal.Questions about the judiciary haven’t started during 22 months u have mention bt b4.HH, u are a worst demagogue.

  4. Pf inherited a rotten judiciary nd dey have wanted 2 change dat but i di ots like u ‘ve always wanted 2 bloke dat.Den yo deputy SG says something abt democracy. Are u saying that in a demo u’ve 2 insult ,defem, scandalise etc?Den 2 hell th dat demo.

  5. The Yo-Yo is on the swing again! He was against reforms, now he is in favour of reforms? It is this lack of direction which is costing his party every year, you cannot have a leader of a party who believes in nothing and expect to have many followers. A good leader should tell his followers that he is against corruption and speak out against it not support embezzlers or corrupt judges when they are being investigated! His assumption that Zambians have a short memory is going to cost him in 2016, even the political rejects he his embracing like Tekere William will not help him. They are just making the UPND look more unattractive to peace loving people. They have the platform, but lack of continuity in their messages from the leaders is what they should work on to convince people.

  6. Illegal is illegal n for me all judgments by L. Chibesakunda are illegal. PF has no muscle to carry out judicial reforms. Persecuting Dr Musonda n colleagues is not judicial reforms but judicial persecution. To reform we have to start with right people on top. The rightful person was supposed to b Irene Mambilima. When a person is retired, it means the brain can no longer contribute effectively to a system n Judge Lombe is no exceptional to the rule. And please dont threaten us with contempt

  7. Was it not Hate Hate who condemned the appointment on the judicial tribunal? Now he complains about rot…or he just doesn’t like Justice Chibesakunda.

  8. Stan is corept himself thats why he appointed his aunt into the judiciary illegally. He is protecting something. There are so many capable zambians who fall within the constitutional requirements for that post. Everyone with a head knows that.
We need to impeach PF, they have failed, riots everywhere, police harrassing citizens just to safeguard their jobs,

  9. You know, I’m getting tired of hearing about this unfortunate-looking Chief Justice.

Relieve us of the unpleasantness of reading about you every god-damned day! There are resignation sample templates on the internet – all you need to do is fill in the blanks with your name and put your signature at the bottom.

I don’t know what the cost of a postage stamp is, but you have options – for once make use of that driver in a way that will benefit us all..

We’re standing by to applaud you.
