Nurses at Ndola Central Hospital have joined their UTH and Kitwe Central hospital counterparts in protesting against government’s decision to give them a four percent salary increment.

At Ndola Central hospital nurses were found outside the hospital premises chanting anti-union leader slogans.

The nurses who vowed not to go back to work until they are addressed by Health Minister Dr Joseph Kasonde are demanding among other things a 75 percent basic salary increment.

The irate nurses told ZANIS that they also want their Union Leader Tom Yunga to step down citing that he has over stayed in the Union and that he is a liar who had failed to represent them.

The nurses also threatened to sort out part timers who were attending to patients at the hospital saying what they were fighting for was also for their benefit.

And Arthur Division Children’s hospital Pharmacists have also down tools leaving the pharmacy at the country’s children referral hospital closed.

And some mothers who had taken their children for medication complained over the closure of the pharmacy and called on government to address the plight of the pharmacists before the situation gets out of hand.

    • What’s with the hideous blue sweaters. How can nurses be active in the ward weighed down by those heavy ugly sweaters. Can they wear red at least?

Anyway give them better salaries, the hospitals they work in are messed up.

    • Personally I hip all these faracas on Sata he has been ill advised according to cap 297 Medical act of the laws ZAMBIA recognises and classifies Medical doctors, Dental Surgeon under same high rack medical category and pharmacists are justified to go on strike because they are cheated. Ministry if health is full of dr who alaways bend rules to their favour only. Pharmacist has an on call person who comes to give drugs at night. A dr working at day tb, diabetes clinic who finishes work at 17:00hrs and never works at night will have nighty duty allowance even if he never works at night. Sata please re vissit your thinking. Your Bemba minister kasonde is incompetent. You make HH now to look like he is a messiah Zambians are waiting but it’s your lies catching u

    • Cap 297 of the laws of zambia puts Pharmacists.Dental surgeons medical practioner(doctors) under same high rack medical personnel. You read the medical and allied professions act. I support pharmacist have been cheated for long because ministry of health is full of doctors who manipulates things to their on favour.

    • All these bad things strikes, corruption, hate nefyashala,, have been caused by Wynther Kabimba!!..
Kabimba has minyama (curse),, the country cant be blessed with Kabimba in leadership

    • YABA! This is real agony for our nurses – from promises of MORE money in the pocket to the reality of NO money in the pocket… Awe kwena naise 2016!!!

    • KEkekekekekeke @ Ndobo, ati Kabimba ali na minyama. So all the lives lost due to strikes will follow Kabimba??

    • Folks

Please learn to read between the line with diligence . These strikes about the cost of living which has swallowed every little salary increment there has been under PF. If you compare the %price rises for all goods and services now and before PF came to power you will discover the salary increments are far below what would enable most workers to break even. In simple terms all the salary increments have been swallowed by price increments. In other words the government is giving with one hand while taking with the other one via the removal of subsidies.

Here some clear examples. Nurses got 100% increment. Soon after that akabunga went up by 129% from K37 to K85. Transport went up by 75%, .All the other goods went up by between 65% to 130% due to the scrapping of subsidies.

    • @octopus.Your training is a four training just like biomedical scientist ,Bsc nursing and even physiotherapist with a degree. Infact the above mentioned three categories do more work than you who is doing the work of a stores officer. There is no difference between a stores officer and the pharmacist in the hospital. Even without you the hospital will still function.

  1. UCZ Synod Bishop should have seized the opportunity of the gathering of 24 MPs of UCZ to send a message on critical issues affecting the nation instead of talking about infrastructure development. The church should have spiritual understanding of times when God wants to speak using it. UCZ somtimes awe mwe!!!! May be not to annoy pay masters????

  2. Wrong comments for this story! These comments belong to another story!

LT fix this. Am I the only one to notice that the site is not working correctly?

  3. The woman on the gurney is not tucked in it right. The cloths are almost trailing on the very unsanitary ground.

In fact the whole getup does not inspire confidence at all!

  4. Harmonisation of salaries ws meant to bring everyone at par.Nurses had been gettting more money than other civil servants with the same qualifications.

    • so you mean harmonization is getting money equal to cleaners… if you’ve getting less blame your union.. nurses always fight for what they deserve.. dont blame them

  5. If cleaners were not increased that much ,they would be no strike. Its just out of envy ….Any way I don’t work in GOV so thts their issue…

    • You’ve done well to stop! Hw can you compare a person who has suffered for and a sch failure to get equal pay? Don’t coment if u’re ignorant of the subject at hand.
Not only ZUNO leaderts to resign but also HWUZ & CSAWUZ. Stupid and currupt chaps in unions. Atasssee…

  6. If cleaners were not increased that much ,they would be no strike. Its just out of envy ….Any way I don’t work in GOV so thts their issue…

    • Salary should be commensurate with skill and expertise not manual labor. The harmonization was un professionally handled. Cleaners and office orderlies do not under go any training and it is VERY WRONG to equate their salaries with those of trained professionals.

  7. @Ndobo
Wynter had done nothing wrong in the party. Let him leave the PF on his own just like Renard has done to the Chipolopolo job. Do not place all blames on wynter blame the Puff manifesto which is centred on questionable promises and failure to explain to the nurses why a 4% was awarded to them.
The curses will be upon the “party” for mistreating an individual for selfish reasons.
The PF awarded nurses 100% salary increment last year as reported on the media. No civil servant went on strike for that. What could be wrong now? We need answers from the minister and the first lady to intervene before 1000s die in hospitals.

  8. but these nurses got a hefty salary last year. they want to get another hefty pay this year aswell? nsansa kuchinganya. fire those 1diots who will not heed the call to go back for work. sata fired over 120 doctors who did not listen when he was minister of health. what about nurses? besides they just spend more time knitting and drinking tea at work, selfish quacks

  9. iwe matipa ulichipuba saana it doesnt matter whatever was given last year because every one was given. What we are saying is that no cde can get better than a qualified health personel. we are not fools you *****, you think nurses are esily replaced silly fool we shall continue striking.

  10. @ matipa
Yes let the minister fire them and use cleaners and office orderlies to attend to patients. What a brilliant idea. You can even call the minister now.

  11. Anger fuelled by the costs of by elections, never ending constitution review, lack of fuel subsidies, etc. Watch that careless govt spending. Voters are watching.

  12. Octopus …I guess you know nothing as on how doctors and pharmacists work…never will you see a pharmacist work beyond 16hours in a day. So what allowance are calling for?Doctors no longer get oncall allowance…if anything check their new pay slips…check the surrounding pharmacist’s work and compare with that of a dr…gather full information before commenting..

    • Dr Kipe yayo, you seem to have little or no information about the profession of pharmacy. Please consult before you yap.Ask from UTH what time pharmacists knock off.

  13. I have never heard of a doctor who gets night allowance!!! And pharmacists don’t work at night!! Even without a pharmacist hospitals can run!!! These people are suppose to be working pharmaceutical companies but are busy dispensing drugs a job even cleaners can do!

    • Kampyongo, you must be retarded.A cleaner can dispense?Only in zambia where you like task shifting.Even cleaners screen patients in some facilities.Does that mean anyone can screen? You devil

    • dispensing is not dishing out drugs like tomato at the market. Its all about maximising therapeutic outcomes. Therefore patients need information about drugs they will be taking.Have you heard of drug-drug/food interction.Do you think a cleaner is able to give out that information? How many patients have taken the drugs wrongly and keep coming to the hospital and you keep treating them for the wrong diagnosis.Come on!

  14. kasama general whats up are you joinin us or not? Nurses especially, whom are you pleasing is it yungana or what? Remember that we are one can you please do something, kabwe general whats up and all the district health hospitals together with clinics. We are waiting we need a countrywide strike.

  15. Very indisciplined nurses! Letting patients die negligent wat money do they want? President publicly awarded them 100% remember that?
