FIRST Lady Dr Christine Kaseba has implored luminaries in the law profession to contribute to the fight against gender-based violence (GBV) by offering their services on pro-bono basis.Pro-bono is a Latin word which means done without charge or free legal services.

Dr Kaseba said GBV cases were on the increase and that all concerned parties must unite?to curb the vice. The First Lady said this during a Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) Anti-GBV breakfast meeting at Radisson Blu Hotel in Lusaka yesterday.

“We want to see the recognised law firms spare their time to offer their services in the fight against GBV on pro-bono basis,” Ms Kaseba said.

Dr Kaseba said there was need to rethink the strategies currently being used in the country to address GBV.She said it was time to adopt integrated approaches, including enhancing partnerships, inter-sectoral collaboration to enhance awareness, prevention, monitoring and managing GBV.

This, she said, should be done in line with one of the six targets in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Protocol on Gender and Violence.

“Despite criminalising all forms of physical, emotional, psychological and financial abuse, we continue seeing a rise in GBV atrocities,” she said.

Ms Kaseba said the effects of GBV were not only felt by the people who experienced it but those who witnessed the vice, especially children.

She hailed LAZ for taking leadership in the discourse, adding that the country was looking up to such organisations to protect victims through the facilitation and strengthening of the judicial process.LAZ president James Banda said the legal fraternity was committed to the fight against GBV by offering legal services.

  1. This from a woman whose husband appointed a known wife beater to the position of Minister for Defence? A woman who shamelessly stole another woman’s husband to be where she is today? Definitely a case of ‘do as I say’ and not ‘do as I do’. Same hypocrisy that asks ordinary Zambians to tighten their belts whilst I give myself a hefty salary increment of 27% or condemn opposition parties for not attending independence day celebrations when I did exactly that just two years prior!

    • The victims have to get to a lawyer first. Many victims of domestic violence especially women don’t want to press charges against their husbands.
There are desperate women out there who will take anything to stay married, uluse!

    • Stand and sing of Zambia proud and free
Land of work and joy in unity
Victors in the struggle for the right
      We’ve won freedom’s fight
      All, one strong and free

Praise be to God, praise be, praise be, praise be (Christian nation)
Free men (and women) we stand
Under the flag of our land
      Zambia, praise to thee
      All, one strong and free

Africa is our own mother land (Of course)
Fashioned with and blessed by God’s good hand (All natural resources)
Let us all, her people join as one (unity)
Brothers (and sisters), under the sun
      All, one strong and free

One land and one nation is our cry (One Zambia, One nation!)
Dignity and peace ‘neath Zambia’s sky (Peace and stability)
Like a noble eagle in its flight
      Zambia, praise to thee
      All, one strong and freeeeeeeeeeeeee!

  2. Zambians work up!!

I have a feeling she is the real Minister of Health. Yes I know she is a Dr. but in the actual sense all health related matters in this country are being handled by her. Almost attending all conferences and I have not recently heard of any activity by our Minister of Health. May be he works in the background!!

    • You are right, her forever big mouth laughter tells it all. Most likely she is being groomed to take over as president.

  3. Dr Kaseba should do everything possible to persuade her husband to stop using verbal and physical violence against opposition leaders,NGOs,the clergy and other stakeholders.Michael Sata should stop employing primitive methods of ruling Zambia. We want democracy here and NOT dictatorship and kleptocracy.

  4. I fully agree, and she should give the LAZ Mrs GBM Bwalya’s number so that they can help her with the gender based violence the obese lumpeneering ***** keeps on administering on her.

  5. Leave my president. As Lusaka PF chairperson I will defend my president till the last drop of my blood.

  6. But Kaseba’s smile also, you can actually see the entire dental formula from the incisors in front right up to the molars in the rear. Maybe it’s all because of too much BJs on CNP’s slumbering tool!

  7. First tell ur husband to reverse his salary increment b4 asking lawyers to provide gbv victims with free legal services.

  8. There is nothing for free. Let the government pay the lawyers to defend the women you are referring to. Your budget can also be used for this purpose. If your husband and his mauralding ministers rejected the massive salary increaments they awarded themselves, this could also be used to pay lawyers. Stop this rubbish of asking citizens to sacrifice while you are busy plundering the country’s meagre resources. Lawyers have employees to pay, rates, water, electricity, petrol and so forth, which you as first lady get free!! Damn!!
