KONKOLA Copper Mines (KCM) has terminated contracts of Zambian companies at its Nchanga plant in Chingola.

Chingola District Commissioner George Sichula said almost all the local contracts involving Zambian companies have been terminated by KCM.

Mr Sichula said no reasons have been advanced by the mining company for terminating local contractors and suppliers contracts and that KCM had created a problem that needed to be addressed.

He said his office had been trying to engage KCM management into discussing the issue.

“Termination of contractors for Zambian companies is a serious issue which KCM should re- address because the company has created a problem and I thought we needed to call for a meeting and address the problem,” he said.

Mr Sichula said the number of contractors and suppliers operating in Chingola was huge and sending them on the streets was a big challenge to Zambians.

Some contractors affected had complained that KCM had offloaded them on the street s due to termination of their contracts.

They said some contractors were only given contracts for three months despite being the longest serving at Nchanga Underground mine.

They complained that it was difficult to get long term contracts from KCM while companies with Asian origin have better rates, better contracts and were paid on time.

KCM management could not be reached for a comment.

  1. These Indian Investors must go and we should NEVER repeat the same mistake!
An Indian becomes very arrogant when they think they have amassed enough wealth!
Let us not suffer them to take too much root in our country!
We should flush some of them back to India!
These are just Infestors! Their economy is a cobweb one. They only deal with fellow Indians!
This is the same reason Idi Amin flushed them out of Uganda!
They can be a terrible pest to control!
    No Apologies!
This is Our country and all those who wish to do business here must respect the locals and abide by the rules of our land!

    • thumbs up to you Dim Wit – you are 100% spot on!! I once worked for this hell of a company & I feel pity for my brothers & sisters l left there. these guys are just a bunch of time wasters….even in their own country, they are not taken seriously! they are irritatingly secretive and have no regard for locals/nationals (both suppliers and employees). its high time, they were flushed out of our sweet Zambia….twanaka nabo mwe!!

    • I understand your sentiments and those aired in the article. However, Zambia is to blame to a larger extent for this mess. Firstly, on acquisition of the company by the Indians Zambia disadvantaged itself greatly. Our position as a nation on foreign investors is that of begging. Check the Zambia Development Agency website and you will understand what I am talking about. We are at their terms and mercy but it should be opposite. Secondly, the Zambian suppliers are so exorbitant its shocking. At times even not supplied for things are paid for over and over. Even things in excess stock are still being bought. Understand me, I am not supporting them Indians but I am saying Zambia bears most of the blame. Once we are proud to be Zambians we will see change indeed.

  2. Find serious Investors, the Indians think Zambia is Wild farm where they can just Harvest not minding who will plough back.

  3. Its a very good move these local contractors are evil they pay workers slave wages just to mention a few salifya, fitumbanuma, etc.and they pay workers late.kcm good move bring some1 who can pay workers nicely and on time.

    • I think you are useless, don’t comment if you don’t sensible things to say. We Zambia contractors do you know the rates we local contractors ,the can’t even give mobilisation you are very useless .

  4. Indians are dificult people to work with, they prefer their own who they can abuse as they wish.
KCM has failed government should move in and look for another partner and please never your give mines to these people let them be in the shops.

  5. Poor contract management without following proper tender procedures. All commercial depts in KCM headed by non-qualified people cannot make honest and ethical oriented contracts.

just imagine, how many contracts have been terminated in the recent past? bengi….

THIS IS ANOTHER BINANI IN WAITING! MARK THIS

  6. Independence means being able to rule yourselves by voting for leaders of your choice,,but after salling mines, you can only plead with them to assist local contractors with contracts ,their is no binding document compelling any company to do business with a particular group weather local or foreign. My hope was PF was going to buy back some shares in these mines to boosts influence, copy & paste from Mugabe…stop making noise other wise.

  7. Zambians, just TALK,TALK,TALK,that’s all you know better, you have no idea what goes on in KCM,so sometimes it’s good to learn the truth and then you can TALK.

  8. Zambian suppliers are the spoilt brats. Whenthe going gets tough, the tough get going.
Rise to the occasion. Beat the foreign suppliers at their own game. To achieve that adjust your business practices, work like the Chinese, Indians, Lebanese and not 08-1700 hours, girlfriends and drinking being priority than work is killing most of us.
Our work culture and pettiness, always crying for handouts and favours is what has made us what we are today, Dependent. We are spoilt brats as we are living in the past. ZCCM days of 200% profit margin, bribing and who you know, wako ni wako, bruru system. Private profit driven and shareholders focused companies from any part of the world will ask for timely delivery at the most competitive price and at short notice.
    How many Zambians work on…

  9. Private profit driven and shareholders focused companies from any part of the world will ask for timely delivery at the most competitive price and at short notice.
How many Zambians work on saturdays, sundays, holidays? Miniing is 24 hours/365 days work. How many Zambians are ready to work 24 hours a day, be there when the principal needs and not being drunk and busy with some concubine somewhere and give excuses for not supplying or servicing on time or worse at short notice? How many will jump on a plane and bring the part that mine needs within the shortest time?

Always complaining and rushing to thieving politicians.

Wake up, we are in private driven set up and we have to adjust to the time. No Indian, Chines, Lebanese, European, South African is against us. We are our own…

  10. Always complaining and rushing to thieving politicians.

Wake up, we are in private driven set up and we have to adjust to the time. No Indian, Chines, Lebanese, European, South African is against us. We are our own enemies. Man south, man north, man east, man west wants to save money and if a Zambian supplier is competitive and reliable he will get the order, if not too bad. That is how business dictates.

  11. Zambian governmen should apply the same tactics/principal the did on Zamtel with the Arabs to save that mine…..Its a shame and sad at the same time….. allowing shallow investors do what they want…I can bet it will be more costly for the next investor should they head back home

  12. At times it is the foolishness of the same Zambian contractors. Mining is 24/7/365 business and has no time to wait for jim and jack to nurse their HO before they think of delivering their duty. Most Zambian companies are simply failing despite government’s insistence policy of giving priority to Zambian firms for services. Lack of seriousness and dependence on corruption as a means of running companies, otherwise lack of seriousness is what will cost Zambian firms lose jobs, and make government look like a failure on some of its policies. Some serious companies that started small have grown and are dependable for mining services and may remain so. At the same time corruption (made a factor of bidding cost by price or service) always makes it costly. with love guys

  13. The solution is to be proud as Zambians. Let us give these guys terms of engagement. If they dont agree we part company …that so. Not always begging them.

Peace and Prosperity to Mother Zambia.

  14. this article is shallow and lacks in merit, it does not mention the name of contractors whose contracts have been terminated, no figures of how many contractor employees are affected. these are the benefits of having low calibre people in high level govt offices such as that of the DC. I can tell you for a fact that this report is all false there is no contract that has been terminated by KCM lately

  15. KCM has gone ahead with PAYE deductions against govt advise. Ask any from KCM, deductions have been effected this monthend.
