Information and Broadcasting Minister Mwansa Kapeya has disclosed that government has hired a consulting law firm to harmonise the Acess to Information (ATI) Bill with other pieces of legislation that may have implications on the Act once it is passed.
Mr. Kapeya says the hired a consulting law firm has been given 30 days to look at this and that once this is done the Bill will be taken to parliment for enacactment.
Mr. Kapeya who is also chief government spokesperson has disclosed this at the Open Government Partnership (OPG) Summit 2013 take place in the United Kingdom (UK).
Addressing the OPG Summit at the Queen Elizaberth (II) Conference Centre in London, Mr Kapeya has told the the more 1000 international delegates that the PF governement is also enhancing access to information for all by expanding the delivery infrastructure to both urban and rural areas.
Mr. Kapeya has pointed out the reviving of local language newspapers and the setting up OF television studios in each of the 10 provinces of the country as some of things the government is doing to increase pubic access to information.
He further adds that the operationalisation of the Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA) this year to oversee and regulate the broadcasting industry is one of the major steps government has taken to accelerate media development.
And Mr. Kapeya has assured the summit that the Zambian govenement is committed to entrenching openess in the governance of the country so that people are always given a chance to make informed choices.
Mr. Kapeya says Zambia has taken bold steps to open up space for democratic discourse in the last two years the the PF has been in power.
The Minister further notes that the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and Parliamentary Accounts Committe (PAC) are some of the critical institutions helping to promote open government by providing the necessary oversight functions.
The keynote address to the summit was done by the British Prime Minister David Cameroon.
This is according to a statement released to Qfm by press secretary at the Zambia mission in the UK Amos Chanda.
