Zambia police has dismissed reports of violence in Lusaka yesterday. Commenting on media reports that suspected Patriotic Front (PF) cadres, wielding machetes, attempted to allegedly attack a rival faction, police spokesperson Charity Chanda said in an interview that it is not true that there were people with machetes.

Ms Chanda  warned that anyone found peddling lies and spreading falsehoods will be arrested.

Yesterday, business came to a virtual standstill in the CBD and Kamwala trading centre when the gang reportedly from Inter-City Bus Terminus attempted an early morning raid on their Lusaka City Market rivals.

Word quickly spread across the CBD and Kamwala that a horde of youths from Inter-City Bus Terminus was headed for the city centre to take over the City Market.

[pullquote]“We know them, they came in two Rosa buses and were armed with chains and machetes,” Mr Banda said.[/pullquote]

With the intra-party rivalry coming just four days after a bloody clash that left one man dead, panic and fear gripped business owners who hurriedly closed doors and barricaded their premises.

Eye witnesses at City Market said that several people were beaten in Chibolya township and Kamwala trading area earlier during the day.

By early afternoon, there was still a heavy presence of police officers in town clad in riot gear but calm had returned and most shops had reopened.

Chitapi Banda, a resident of Chibolya a horde of youths suspected to be from Inter-city Bus Terminus stormed the township waking up people before police moved in to quell the upheaval.

“We know them, they came in two Rosa buses and were armed with chains and machetes,” Mr Banda said.

Another eye witness, Wamulume Mubita, said he saw someone being beaten at a depot near the City Market.

[pullquote]“These people are dangerous. I saw them myself and I’m scared,” Mrs Jere said.[/pullquote]

And a business woman said she saw a large group of youths clad in party regalia marching towards Namununga School before police dispersed them.

Mercy Jere, who sells second-hand clothes at City Market and lives in Kanyama, said she is now scared of trading from the City Market because she is not too sure if calm has indeed been restored.

“These people are dangerous. I saw them myself and I’m scared,” Mrs Jere said.

  1. Why are the police refusing violence? Just accept that People Fighting (PF) are violent and that there is a big problem with PF, and the problem is with the chief of confusion him, because he revels where there is confusion.
If it was the UPND, this was going to be big news. We cannot allow a situation where a group of disgruntled and violent people are causing confusion and making the life of ordinary Zambian unbearable. PF is not fit to rule the country. You are better off in the opposition. 2016 you are going to the abyss where you belong.

    • This is the time when you think that the Egyptian formula should be applied. I really envy the Egyptian army. Nomba ifyesu, kaya.

    • So people died from slaps and sustained life threatening wounds from insults? Why deny things that are blatantly evident? These people are behaving like a person who has soiled in his/her pants and has flies all over the body yet deny the fact and attribute the flies to some rotten finish nearby.

    • Police you are not helping matters at all, hence the reason we feel you are part of the cadres. why deny something which was witnessed by people and updates have been give concerning the same. what is the message from you people, that you do not have intelligence to inform you correctly or you decided not to pay attention to your own? Pls be fair and help this country.

    • MOP @ 1.4, Valid point You have made.
Unfortunately people NEVER learn from past episodes. These People / Law enforcement officers, will one day have to answer for not carrying out their duties, once their pay- masters are no longer in the control tower – (Plot 1).

    • This is annoying talk from Chanda!
She is proving to be incompetent and out of touch with the reality on the ground.
With the current top brass in the Police Service, I don’t see them controlling these unruly thugs. Do you want the Soldiers to do this job for you?
Let us know if you have failed? We are able to put this nonsense to an abrupt end.
Anyone wielding an unlawful weapon in public needs to be dealt with irrespective of who their bwana is!

    • Please someone show me where I can find proof of pangas and other weapons.
A photo would be nice, but a video would be priceless. Words only do not cut it with me. With all those cell-phones around, I would think someone took a snap or a video.
      Lets get real, Peace.

  2. The zambian police are compromised beyond repair and they think we’re blind. Why won’t they have the same resolve when dealing with PF hooliganism at its source?

    • Madam Pretty Articulate and Stunningly beautiful Elizabeth Kanjela (now Mrs World Bank), where are you?
Madam Libongani needs you at the PR frontline by Order!! We miss you mum although you did get upset with the UPND cadres the other time. But make no mistake, you are perhaps the most beautiful in the senior ranks. Kalijo bane muleke. Did someone see Elizabeth at her kitchen party? Kwati sibuju….so so beautiful. I salute your husband for catching a pretty young lady. Serve him well. Not kumanga ba daddy nansimbi ya Zambia Police; love him…..

  3. Okay I also saw them and I am spreading ‘rumours and lies’ chi Charity Chanda. Come and arrest me we chipuba. You can say anything and look like N idi.o.t to earn a salary. Very useless pfolice.

    • Are you sure police command, you can not find someone articulate enough to be your PRO… This Charity Girl can not express herself properly and she is not photogenic……. You are embarrasing yourselves as police….can Charity be the face of the Police?

    • It could be Vocabulary limitation on her part. She doesn’t know what a machete is and she thinks it is an insult maybe. To her they were carrying very big knives.

  4. yaba boza imwe fi police. why are you protecting these fools called cadres? are you under the direction of winter kambimba? iv lost hope in these PF fools controlled by Meembe. even a coup can do mweee. idle sordiers what are you waiting for4 you fools, stage a ka coup to remove this old man controlled by Meembe

  5. ZP tell us what really happened. now that we know that ZP is spokesman for PF. You are not even ashamed of your PF protection. when the thugs entered the township where you there for you to refute that no pangas were held. Libongani has failed to execute her duties as top Cop. come 2016 you too will pack just like cycle mata. Please dont turn this beautiful country into a battle front. mind you there are alot of guns lying around in this country. all those guns from wars in Congo & Angola have already crossed into Zambia. we are ready to take up arms if need be to defend from police& PF. careful with national security papa

  6. But I saw the pangas with my own eyes. Your fellow police were even seen grabbing the same pangas. Charity just shut up. Are you embarrassed that you are failing to deal with the cadres?

    • You are wrong.
What you actually did see are the long sticks made of olive tree branch in accordance with high morals of the “Christian Nation”

  7. When you have mad people in allmpositiojns of power, sanity is unlikely to be restored because they will all refuse to admit the truth, which is a pre-requisite to solving the problem. I wish all liars all the best in their lies

    • I do not think PF was elected to restore sanity. I think under MMD, we had a bit of sanity. What we are seeing now is actually INSANITY. I would agree with you if you said PF was elected to destroy sanity. You cannot give sanity which you do not have. We must admit that there is no sanity in PF. The party is actually full of insanity. We are now seeing the manifestation of their true character. If you want to know the true character of a man, just give him power or a lot of money.

  8. It seems even the Police are drunk b like Edgar Lungu their boss. They cant see what is happening to mother Zambia. GOD HELP US

  9. This is what happens when people ascend to positions on nepotism. Libongani will turn a blind eye to please the appointing Authority because her appointment to that senior position is not genuine. Nepotism, corruption, bottom power, name them, will take you there but will not sustain you. So this Charity wants us to believe that the NEW symptoms for Cholera now is DEEP CUTS or SLIT AORTAS. Let her tell the nation then what happened.

  10. This is really sad to hear. May be the Police is challenging us to learn to use our smartphone cameras, take a shot post it on fb, twitter, google+ you name it; I am not disputing that they were no machete carrying brothers but am saying let us learn to collect evidence of these things as it will become handy one of these fine days.

    • It is not a challenge. You don’t have to be told to use your smart gadgets. That is the only way those on the ground can dispel lies and propaganda. As it is it is mouth running against mouth.

  11. I get it!! They can’t arrest the real criminals, so they’ll arrest us law-abiding citizens who are trying to warn and caution other law-abiding citizens.

You are a COMPLETE let down Zambia Police — absolutely and completely.

    #OneZambia

  12. Our police force would unashamedly release a statement like: “There was no Monday 11th November 2013 in Lusaka. Anyone spreading rumors that there was a Monday 11th November 2013 in Lusaka will be arrested.” Do people think before releasing such blatant, arrogant, senseless statements? Whatever happened to thinking before saying gibberish? Do police think the masses are blind even to what is happening in their own backyards?

Our police force needs intellectual liberation. What happened to the university graduates that were once recruited in the force?

We all need to realise that Zambia is for all of us, together. Police: please don’t threaten us over brainless people fighting over causes they don’t understand. They had machetes, and we saw them. And you are failing to control…

  13. it seems the police were part of the group of cadres, because how else would they know with “certainty” that the cadres did not have machetes?

  14. Charity Chanda, please do not bury your head in the sand. Are you the only Jew who cannot see what is happening? Your entire Zambia Police Service is like a spineless jelly fish. You cannot stand up for yourselves until PF says so…You twi.ts…..

  15. How can Zambian Police force police themselves? They have no internal affairs dept ,Ineffective Gorilla : IG runs every thing. Ka Charity if I were in Lusaka I could have arrest your sorry @ss for spreading falsehoods and ugliness, You just messed up my dinner.

  16. Reminescent (sp) of Super Ken days. Shortage of Mealie meal, cooking oil, sugar, etc.. What shortage?? Stupid ***** sit down!

  17. this is another use le ss police woman. she is a stupidi *****i who wants to arrest innocent people instead of of the murderers and their bosses. shame of on you charity. no wonder you look like an aids case.

  18. Milling Companies have increased meal meal from today the 12th November,2013
    10kg – K28
    25kg – K67
    50kg – K132
Is there a way these milling co. can help the government to feed the nation with the low prices on the item

  19. Iye usaka is so dirty, look at that road just in the center of lusaka, limbanda area. Dirt had become part of Zambia, we see it as normal. Oh Zambia my beloved country!!!, when is your redemption coming?

    • Some of those petty criminals should be asked to carry out community service by cleaning up city environs instead of being locked up in those congested correction facilities.

  20. What a thing to come from the police? How low have you sank ZP? Please sticky to your professional boundaries. Since when did the police start speaking on behalf of suspected criminals? Where are the ethics? You only issue such statements after you have concluded investigations. That is if it is necessary. How many times have police ever published their findings? All we usually see are suspects appearing in courts of law.

  21. So disappointed with zed journalism – not a single picture on ZW, LT and Post to authenticate the news about machete panga yielding pf cadres for one 1/2/3/ weeks – not even a picture of those injured dying in the hospitals – how do we authenticate the genuineness of the story those of us far away from home? very disappointed!!!!!!

    • The cadres did not inform the media houses that they will be attacking. Next time request info from the cadres before they attack then the others will have pictures but most people saw the injured on telly. And some injured people have given interviews. What more authentication do you require?

  22. ASK FORMER IG OF POLICE KABONDE HOW HE WENT TO HIDE AT A POLICE STATION IN MUFUMBWE DURING BY ELECTIONS. TYPICAL OF THE POLICE. WHEN SHE IS SORTED OUT BY THE SAME THUGS, THT’S WHEN SHE WILL SEE THE REALITY ON THE GROUND. BAD WOMAN.

  23. Anarchy and lawlessness is the order of the day in Zambhia. Sata is hiding in state house. The newly PF introduced Militia syndrome in Zambia is disheartening. Sata must be impeached. Sata is a total waste of our resources if we continue to sustain him for being idle and for fanning violence in our beautiful country.

  24. Maybe some off duty police officers were part of the Inter city rival gang. Maybe they were also armed guns this time around, so reporting that they were armed with machetes when in fact they were armed with guns is a lie.

  25. I thought the police said they were going to arrest the cadres responsible for the death of their colleague ,how come today they are say who is spreading lies will be arrested>What nonsense is this?

  26. Judging from the language one can tell that if this cop was a school head, ‘ld be telling students that who ever gets answers right will failed! This reflects very badly on the quality of leaders we currently have both in politics and civil service!

  27. Fake journalist paddling lies, urgents of Lucifa.Pf is a ruling party as such all sorts of characters want 2 indentify themselves with the party.Only demons like HH nd his colegues re taking advantage of Dis evil.Zambia u re covered in JESUS’ BLOOD!

  28. so this lady thinks people are blind…how can she say such a statement when people were running for their lives…don’t take us for granred

  29. The Zambian Police are making fun (fo.o.ls) of themselves. Are the Police telling the nation that the cadre who died when the President was at KK International Airport was killed by MOSQUITO BITES when the insects became violent to attack and kill the pro-GBM cadres? So the Police is infested with a fleet frightened FLEAS.

We are waiting how the Police will handle scenarios likely to be linked to the official installation of Paramount Chief Chitimukulu. Sata, the Holy GOD who needs no human advice, has no formula how to reconcile with the Bemba Chiefs whom he tried to antagonise with the Bisa Chiefs. Zambia is not like Tanzania where Chiefs are not recognised.

  30. And the chief architect of violence is busy drinking tea or smoking comfortably somewhere in his chair. It is very very sad to hear people in fear again as though we are still leaving in ancient years. I can’t wait to see Guy Scott answer questions to provide information on the MMD ( MMD cadres clad in PF ligalia as he put it) who fought running battles at the airport junction, he seems to have more information than any one else. Please let him shed more light so that we can get to the bottom of this mess. What happened to our freedom, Zambia in the sun. Surely people cannot start living in fear. You cannot provide jobs but people are being afraid of trading to make ends meet? And we say we have “Man of action for a leadr?” PF please give us a break and sort out this mess. Develop Zed.

  31. I think we should disband the Police Force or may be “rebase” it. So that we can star again with new fresh pairs of hands not these Pathetic Force. Just look at the similarities. PF Pathetic Failures. Police Force, sorry Pathetic Force.

    New Police Force
    ZRP = Zambia Rebased Police

  32. I think our Police service is a let down. Instead of listening to what the people are claiming and then investigate, they are now threatening the innocent witnesses. With or without pangas, violence is violence and when it erupts anything can be used to harm others. So dumb.
