Some nurses and midwives at the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) have resumed work after nine days of their striking action.
The nurses and midwives on 22nd November, 2013 stopped work demanding, among other things, that Government rectifies disparities in the new salaries and conditions of service recently awarded to civil servants.
UTH Public Relations Officer, Mwenya Mulenga, has confirmed the development to QFM News in a telephone interview that some nurses started reporting for work yesterday.
Mr. Mulenga says today, the Zambia Union of Nurses (ZUNO) will have a meeting with the Zambia Congress of Trade Union (ZCTU) to discuss the way forward for those who have not resumed work.
Health Minister Dr. Joseph Kasonde on Thursday gave the striking nurses and other health workers until 17:00 hours to resume work or be charged for absenteeism.
Those who hv gone back are fools
As if you will feed and take their children to school when all is said and done!
In as much as I dont like them quiting work, I can bear with them. Life has become so expensive so such that a stagnant salary will not make ends meet. They are in such a dilema that only requires a miracle, but then again I would hope that Government could squeeze some department just to breach that gap in order to help these Nurses.Or get some funds from somewhere like they do when rewarding the Chipolopolo Boys. Coming to think of it, where does those funds come from? an individual/s? Well, these same persons can surely come in on this one pressing issue right?
Strategy – go back to work, keep heads low, continue feeding your families BUT START APPLYING FOR JOBS ABROAD ASAP!!!! If we can’t win this small battle, we will wait for them in 2016 – we will win that battle!!!
kufwa na NO mdala. how do you stab your friends in the back and go back to work. Stand your ground, united you stand, divided you fall.
Good for them and Zambians. Let the PF and GRZ look into the disparities in salaries. Cleaners should not get same salaries as professionals …..this is the cause of this confusion.
Peace and prosperity to Mother Zambia
afta they ve killed our loved ones, ******* say are going back for work, what a joke.
Your loved ones died cause they were sleeping around like s w i n e and refusing to have HIV tests or take antiretrovirals. Or they were drinking and driving, or not using mosquito nets etc… in the end they died cause YOU did nothing to help even when you knew conditions at UTH with or without strike. So stop thinking like a b a s t ar d and give soem support to our overworked nurses.
There were no disparities in the payroll. That was just a fake reason by the Govt to give false hope to the nurses, so that they could return to work.
– Never were any disparities. That was a correct payroll after Govt increased salaries
– So-called Talks will be fruitless because of wage-freeze
– If nurses are to hope for anything, it will be after 2 years
– So meanwhile life will be back to normal
Don’t kubeba!!!!!!
Let the nurses go back to work but the government should deal with this matter. Where is PSMD which misled the government into making such a bad decision regarding salaries.
Ndalumba.
How much net salary does a nurse get exactly? How many hours per week? How much night duties? Any allowances? How does it compare to other professions eg teachers, policmen or office orderlies. There must be nurses here, please provide info.
