Prof Chirwa threatens to denounce Zambian citizenship

Share

Prof. Clive Chirwa
Prof. Clive Chirwa
Former Zambia Railways Limited Chief Executive officer Professor Clive Chirwa has threatened to denounce his Zambian citizenship if his passport is not given back to him within 24 hours to enable him travel to see his family and attend the funeral of former South African president Nelson Mandela.

Prof Chirwa who is facing corruption charges in the courts of law has told QFM News in a walk-in interview that he has not seen his family for a year now, owing to what he has described as imprisonment for the sacrifice he made to come and serve the Zambian people.

He has pleaded for his passport to be released so that he can travel to visit his family, his hero Nelson Mandela and all the democrats.

Professor Chirwa said he has done nothing wrong to Zambia, as he is a clean man of dignified stance who only came to help.

He said Zambia has never appreciated his contribution, hence the request to be allowed to go and enjoy the freedom he had before he answered the call from President Sata to come and help the country.

  1. You are a criminal together with the Chinese fertiliser criminal pretending to be a leader of a country! Leave Rolihlahla alone! You should never speak of him and yourself in the same sentence!

    • @concalves
wena concalves you dont know that Prof chirwa has a signed invitation to go and sit at the high table at the funeral,,, after all Prof Chirwa is innocent kalaluka, british and educated like mushota

    • DO IT Chirwa do it man, its high time. Just resign as a Zambian. If future presidents Chirwa & HH won’t be at Mandela’s funeral, then who will be presentable there? Will it be Sata, I can’t wait to see the list of Zambian representatives from the PF candidates. PF can wait for Mugabe’s funeral.

    • Don’t do it Sir, Zambia will lose out

      Don’t leave Zambia

Most people don’t understand the severity of your threat.
We bet you, stay Zambian all of us want you to remain Zambian sir for no reason at all.

      Thanks

    • It is childish and foolish for proff. chirwa to hold zambia at ransom, give ultimatums and threaten us that he will change citizenship. Please, what difference will it make if you change citizenship, i can assure you, zambia will go on, with or without you. How dare you even utter such sentiments. As a zambian citizen, you have rights and one of your rights is to change your citizenship. dont come up here and start threatening us that you will change citizenship if your conditions are not met. who do you think you are chirwa? Man up, or get out. we dont need your kind in zambia here. White woman marrying, self denying, brain washed african.thinking he got an education because a white man gave him a paper. wake up negro, you is black. lets see you go to UK and aspire for highest office!!!

    • So we are supposed to care if this !mbecile renounces citizenship???

      Hello?? We don’t give a monkey’s……………………

    • Very sad reading both the Article as well as all the comments! You people have neither compassion nor Remorse sad indeed!

    • @Benedict Arnold, you started well brother. Only messed up when you went racial. Great men do not look at colour brother. That’s what made Madiba greater than those who put him in jail.

Greatest achievers think beyond the colour of the coat that covers us all. Cheers!

    • I told prof personally not to dare accept the invitation, but he ignored my advice. So in as much as I feel sorry for him, I am not perturbed about his dilemma. It is his own doing. He decided to take a gamble which back fired unfortunately.
If you want you want to work with Sata be a stooge period. Then you will be in good books for a long time.

    • Chirwa is not a criminal. The only wrong he committed was to come and serve his country, that does not seem to want development and civilisation.

    • its now been 24 hours, mwana wakwitu uchaliko na? whats your stance prof.chirwa? are you already onboard south african airways?

    • You are threatening who Clive??……Even if you left in the next second there shall be no bearing on the lives of ordinary Zambians…..You MUST not put your name in the same sentence with Mandela…You are nothing my friend.

    • HM98. Even a garden boy is a something in life. We can not be celebrating someone denoucing Zambian Citizenship no matter the status they occupy in society. It is not good international picture. Chirwa is a qualified person who came to Zambia at the Presidents’ invitation. That is why people in diaspora (who are qualified professionals) refuse to come to Zambia. You blame them for being unpatriotic. You see now the reasons. Even soccer players refuse to play for their own countries because of such issues. How do you harass someone like this? Yes, he might have done something wrong, but until it is proven as such, he is still innocent and should be allowed to enjoy his freedom. Not sort of treatment is this? I have never met Chirwa but this does not sound human at all.

  2. It makes no sense to me why this man is being persecuted like this.He didn’t come on his own Sata asked him to come. What kind of example is this government setting for those Zambians abroad who want to come back? Chirwa you are better of renouncing your Zambian citizenship.

  3. Fyakwishiba we mwine, as far as we know we all want to go and morn Madiba, you are not the only one let law take its course. Change citizenship but you will never change origin.

  4. is it not you who said Sata is better than HH? Remain in Zambia and enjoy now that your favourite candidate is presido

  5. Childish demands….reminds me when I was a kid and mum denies me to wear new clothes she had just bought for me but reserved for Xmas day….I would declare that…’if I don’t wear the new clothes then I wont eat the nshima..’.. (nshyafilyeko nefibwali), and ‘I wont go to school tomorrow’…and my mother would just look at me without saying anything…..six hours later, I will be in the kitchen with my eyes popped out looking for nshima

  6. Yes ,Prof Chirwa please follow in my footsteps.Thats why jina langu ni “wa zamani” bcoz i couldn’t stand ujinga, uchafu na uzembe obtaining abundantly in zambia.

    • Nostradamus,

Please learn to see beyond your nose. You probably know much about Zambia and UK but you do not know much about DRC. Pls analyse the situation according to your intellectual level.

DRC shares the border with 9 countries and Zambia is just one of them. DRC is 2,345,000 km2 with 60,000 people. The majority of Congoleses do not even know where Zambia is. You find almost no one at the Zambian Ambassy in Kinshasa requesting for a visa. Instead people from Katanga queue at the Zambian consulate General in Lubumbashi.
Talk to your Ambassador in DRC; there are lot of Zambians in DRC that just go to Zambia for a visit. They work in different sectors and nobody considers them like Enemies!
There is lot we need to learn from white people. Love one Onother! Do not preach…

    • Mzamba wa Zamani and Bwalya

Well spoken guys! A lot of Zambians have no compassion for fellow Africans. They have been brought up to believe that suffering was only meant for black people. Clive has not been found guilty. Why can’t he be accorded the freedom he deserves until he is found guilty. The government tried the same thing on some Czech citizens. In the end the government were given an ultimatum by the EU to try or release them. The Czech citizens were released and sent home without being tried. But because Clive made the mistake of relinquishing his British citizenship, he can be ‘imprisoned’ without trial for as long as PF wants. In the meantime, small minded Zambians think it is Ok because it is not happening to them and because they like to see fellow Zambians suffer.

    • @mukame – I am sure many here sympathize with this guy’s circumstance. It is the content of his character, especially the self-worship that some find troubling and was probably his undoing at Zambia Railways.

  7. This is one of the guys who championed the dual citizenship cause.
    Awe chapwa nomba tabakatupele.
If, when we have a brush with the law, we quickly look to denounce being Zambian and expect those in Zed to trust us, then we have an uphill battle. To a common man, the easier story is “a diasporian came to quickly try and enrich himself at the expense of long suffering railways employees and was caught. Now he wants to run away in the pretence of going ku malilo ya Mandela” – As if he is invited.
Even Steven Masumba and Mary Tembo want to go and attend as well. Sorry Clive! So much for trying to help “your country!”

    • @Mukame
There are words “one of the guys” in my first sentence. So you are truly “mistake” LOL
      * Read what you are responding to and check what you are writing.

  8. Sad, professor, sad. Politics in Africa and Zambia is like beans flour porridge. Looks cool on top but very hot below so that if swallowed hurriedly can char and burn your throat. I thought you went to university in the 1980s like me to be able to make an objective assessment before making a move. We all must respect and pray for our leaders but when it comes to making personal decisions politically, we need to make a sober analysis of which political direction to take.
The question is how did you acquire dual citizenship before the law was changed, because it sounds as though you still hold a Zambian passport when you also possess a British passport? Will they not prefer charges against you for this? I was just reflecting……

    • You do not denounce your citizenship to become british, plain democracy with nothing to hide. How nice, the british embrace dual citizenship. You can be british even when you are German, Canadian, Zimbabwean, Tunisian, Zambian, Russian, etc if they accept you. Standard practice.

  9. Ba prof. we told you Sata is a snake, but you achimweme you were saying NO underground trains, No electric trains, No water trains, mwakuti na mwakuti. See now, you have not seen your wife for one-year ( and someone might start hummering).

    • Renounce is actually the right term in this context. Denounce is used in relation with agreements, actions or situations.
You can denounce a treaty or a government’s policy/decision or denounce certain ills like colonialism, racism, exploitation, child labour etc.

  10. Where ever you lay your head, thats home. Life is too short. 70, 80 and 90 years lucky to be there frail then. Enjoy your short life. No good and no evil, but just power to live on until death do us part. Enjoy if you can.

  11. Good evening

Sad to see how things are getting from bad to worse for the Prof.

I just wonder if anyone but himself has anything to lose if he gives up his birthright? Well, one thing I know is that the freedom and joy that you have in your land of origin can never be compared to the one you get in your adopted home.

In my opinion, a real patriot will never compromise with the principle of nationality by blood or “ius sanguinis” (Latin). Isn’t this one of the ideals that even Nelson Mandela himself fought for?

    • @Nine Chale, Not always true. Jews born in Nazi German have the freedom and joy in their adopted home, the USA. Prof Chirwa can loose nothing renouncing the Zambian citizenship. I bet you have issues with the germans. Come to the US and become a citizen and you will be treated like Obama, despite your country of birth.

    • mule bebako ba proff, why is he making statements like a baby crying for candy sure. we do undertand he misses his family and all, but the statement itself is all wrong. ati i will renounce my citizenship, such coming from somebody who wanted to be president at some time sure? what if kaunda thru his troubles did the same, nkumbula, kalulu, kapwepwe, zulu, banda, nyirenda, would we have this independence. mind you they were promised pieces of land and comfortable living if they desisted from their freedom struggle, but they chose the pain and suffering for love of country. Now this so called proff, is threatening us, because he is in some trouble. Not leadership material at all, so unpatriotic. Am sensitive to his pain, but such statements are so childish ati to be with other democrats lol!!

    • @Man B- learn to see through all the lies and deceptions.Look at the statistics of their own people the african american and their social plight and welfare. the problem with us that we become content when they flash a black man in front of us and tell us that see, anyone can become president forgetting the rest of our people. we shut up and think, yes it is true, anyone can become president, forgetting that it is all by design to keep the negro quiet and surpressed. look at the black communities in the US and tell me am lying. Did you know that Obama is the only president the african americans have not asked anything for? from washington to bush jr, you always asked for something. slavery abolishment, civil rights, affirmative action etc, all of them except obama why? do you see it now??

    • @man b-you will never enjoy the freedoms and liberties that you enjoyed in your native country in a new adopted one.remember to be free is to practice your culture anytime, anywhere(within the confines of your dominion etc village, district, country, continent, world) and all times. You can not practice polygamy in the US,can you,but in zambia because of our cultural nature you can still marry 3 women under the traditional marriage act.dont be fooled by superficiality.freedom is defined by the nature of self. You cant be free if, the man inside you is not. and what makes you, you?its the values, culture that are enprinted on you right through your DNA, your melanin my friend. You are given the illusion that you free in the US,because they change your culture and thinking to suit them i.e language

  12. SATA’S WARNING: I encourage all the people in the diaspora to come back home and contribute to national development. Just know when we differ, I will confiscate your passport so that you are stranded in Zambia without your family overseas.
*We are still living in the 1900s. Zambia will never develop as long as we have UNIP in power

  13. I thought he was just childish, corrupt and egocentric but now I know that Zambia is dealing with a lunatic! Some Professors are really stupid.

  14. I have always had a sneaky feeling that Chirwa was slightly mentally unbalanced. Such utterance from him,has just confirmed my feeling lol!!!!

  15. ummm LT, are you sure that’s what he said? or is it your reporting that makes him sound naive and uncritical? I doubt he would use such a cheap excuse. Leave Chirwa alone. Zambians don’t appreciate intelligent thinking, that’s why they can build two universities in Chinsali, as if all you need for university training is a building.

  16. Chirwa is amazing. How can one be so brilliant and naive (or foolish) at the same time? He said he came to help, then thought because he is a Prof he was smarter than everyone else, became extravagant (expensive Lusaka apartments and commuting 140 km each way daily) and tried to get his company a contract without following tender procedures. These are the charges he has to answer, he must stop these childish demands.

  17. Go ahead,we shud start begging, wat did u bring apart getting a a huge, fat, lumpsious salary from the poor pipo? U have even taken long.

  18. Mr. Chirwa, why you are making threats which are self-destructive? As a Citizen of Zambia, legally you cannot have more than one Citizenship. Are you implying that you have another citizenship/passport of another Country?
Therefore, if you renounce your Zambian Citizenship within the territory of Zambia are you going to become stateless?
Bottom line: Think before you speak.
By the way, who cares what you do?

  19. He claims he was getting millions of dollars in the diaspora. That’s no excuse to steal from a poor nation whose citizenship you want to renounce. If you’re as innocent as you claim to be, why the rant? Emulate RB. Fight your case in the courts of law.

Do you think they will let you go when you renounce your Zambian citizenship? Remember even foreigners are not above the law. Your rant is alienating you even from those who initially thought you were innocent.

  20. Another wasted brain. as they say there is big difference between street smart and book smart. A one sata definitely has the latter. and from this it seems the latter is superior to the former.

  21. “Clive Chirwa spells out plan for ZR, relinquishes his British Citizenship to help Zambia.” Lusaka Times, November 19, 2012
“… Professor Chirwa revealed that he has decided to relinquish his British Citizenship to come and work in Zambia.”
    ****************************
I wonder what is happening with my brother. Sad, things didn’t workout but in life we should learn to take it easy and not rush into making grandiose decisions on the spur of the moment.

  22. Somethiing is wrong with Prof Chirwa, we are in the ZED. This guy conned us that he was the brightest guy in engineering, but show us what he did in England while as I appreciate higher education ,he should show us Zeds what engineering machine he has produced and is being used. Sitting on boards of industries does not mean you are late Jobs or Bill gates. Show us your product Prof. Chirwa. We do not care whether you go to America, England but you still are a FAKE.

    Mkazi waku Mawa.

  23. Chirwa, you are a mafia-criminal allow due process of law to clear your name. Zambia will lose nothing we have a lot of qualified and disciplined Zambians.
From day one you thought Zambians are sleepy, my boy you cheat your self as chimbokaila is waiting for you and no threat will more Zambian people to fight corruption. As Masumba, Katele Kalumba and …………….

  24. It is sad this man does not even consider Zambia to be his Home, And then one might think he would fight for Zambia,s development? He should be glad that Zambia has developed and they are institutions that make sure that tax payers moneys are used in the intended way. I think this guy did misuse Zambia’s money because he thought he is so special and Zambia really needed him badly so he would do what ever he wanted in office. I am tired of Foreigners who think they are doing Zambia a huge favor when they come back because they have a good life abroad. Please if you are a foreigner who thinks that u are offering Zambia a service (and not duty) when you come back than you are useless to this country. Cause we only need people who think they owe this country and not think Zambia owes them.

  25. These are childish tantrums. I still have great respect though for the academic side of prof chirwa. I feel we should have managed his weaker side so that we benefit from his stronger side.

  26. We don’t need him, let him go back to UK. Most Zambians brag too much about other people’s nations forgetting that those guys worked so much to put their countries to were there today. ” Ridding on other people’s success”. An opt to change their nationality. That’s something I will never do. I am proud to be called Zambian.

  27. But who cares whether he renounces or not. There many valued brains in Zambia and if Chirwa is one of them, then we are yet to see his contributions. His sounded drummings are as empty as an old rusty tin.

  28. Just come back guys than begging or cleaning toilets in diaspora. Chirwa created his down fall by talking too much. Ask Emmanuel Mwamba!

  29. Privately owned Underground Railway Network in Livingstone is possible and desirable. It is not too late to sit down and come up with partners in business. This matter has been crowded by government central role in the project. Second, it is normal for Engineering Consultant Service Providers to be paid for that service of designing an engineering project distinct from implementing the designs as Building Contractor. Third, when a new patentable engineering system is developed, then the patent holder or designer or developer or inventor can retain some or all shares of the commercialization of the same patent. Last but least, if the spouse’s company is the most suitable bidder for the provision of a service, then it makes business sense to hire the same bidder.

  30. Some of these professors, they are really stupid people. Now you want to desperately leave Zambia. Yu rushed in like a fool without taking time to think. All you hard in mind was how much money you gonna have made from us Zambians. Who cares whether or not you denounce your citizenship. Kaputi!!!!

  31. We never seem to be learning anything from the great man Mandela. We withstood oppression & injustice for 27years and imaged as a hero. Chirwa be calm and even in the heat of oppression and injustice be patient. Mandela was denied access to his family for 27years & never cried but you just few months you are already screaming with rage

  32. This is one of the disadvantages of dual citizenship and I have always questioned Chirwa’s allegiance to Zambia. It is risky to entrust a person with dual citizenship to preside over the affairs of the country on the ground that they can easily seek asylum from the other country where they are a citizen. Can Chirwa return to Zambia in unlikely event that is given back his passport to visit his family in the UK?

  33. Is this a real threat?? this guy is a clown. after spending all those years in the UK remind me how he will be missed here if he renounces his citizenship. by all means do go ahead and renounce it Sir Clive. a-hole!!!

  34. Renounce citizenship simply indicates that this so called prof. has no interests of Zambia at heart. This is the same man people were saying he is a better potential candidate for 2016. let us be careful!

  35. This is just a misplaced statement for someone who once aspired for presidency. What a bad name he is giving to us in the diaspora. I find him not only childish but ill informed too. As CEO of ZRL, he did not declare interest for his consultancy that he wanted to use to help train ZRL staff. As a noble man he should own up and admit a mistake. The law can caution him and everyone can move on. To start making threats as though there are no Zambians better than him is utter nonsensical.

  36. I fail to understand the thinking of some Zambians. They think that it is alright to ‘imprison’ a fellow Zambian without trial for as long as it takes for the case to come up for trial. Rupiah’s passport was also taken away. But because he still has influence, he got it back and is now able to travel. The state has the right to take away your passport, but you as a citizen also has the right to a quick and fair trial. Clive has not been found guilty yet. Therefore, he should be allowed to travel and earn a living. Clive may be guilty of pomposity, but that is not a crime. OK, I am not sure about the Mandela thing, but he must be allowed to go and visit his family.

  37. Professor Chirwa sounds like a petulant child who, upon being scolded by his parents, wants to destroy his own toys. Why can’t he just calmly wait for the conclusion of the court proceedings?

    • When is the case going to be concluded? After 2016? Will the state pay him for lost earnings if he is found innocent? I hope you would feel the same if you were in his shoes.

  38. Chirwa, answer for your nonsense first then you will be released, passport and all. By renouncing your Zambian citizenship does not mean you will go scot free; being British will not exonerate you from you crimes either
    . What a dummy!!!

  39. The Prof is far much advanced in terms of brains than some of you bloggers who just yap. Bloggers condemning the prof like Goncalves, Benedict Arnold, Mulenga and Jelita, HRH, HM95, Scrutinizer etc are just empty tins always online. When other countries appreciate pipo like the. Prof, you insult him like a child. You I.D.I.O.T.S insulting the prof will never be awakened and reach the prof’s levels. Keep on suffering in Zambia. The Anti corruption will improve your lives. You believe in small dreams or no dreams at all. You will forever wallow in poverty. Prof leave this country and help other nations. Some of u backward Zambians don’t even know that some of the techniques you enjoy in car, trains or planes are as a result of the prof’s research. Zambians really can really mess up.

  40. I urge the prof to go ahead and never come back to Zambia. Do you know that the first scientist who propelled NASA to go to the moon? It was Dr Brown who was the leading scientist for the NAZIS or HITLER. When the Americans captured him after 2nd world war, they changed him, took him to USA and used him positively. Most of the technology for both RUSSIA and USA were evil NAZIS scientists. That is why these two nations are superpowers. They use scientist like Prof Chirwa. to improve their countries. Some of you ignorant bloggers don’t even know that, that is the reason you are enjoying internet, TVs, cellphones etc. If the Prof Chirwa was wrong why can’t the nation guide him and use his knowledge to improve Zambia. Such scientists are tresured all over the world but not Zambia.

    • I am just an ordinary Zambian below the age of 30. if i support someone it doesn’t mean i am the one silly Max Mbizo bafoon. Remain with yo lawyers and see if you will ever develop. You will keep on wallowing in poverty. You will keep on admiring other countries not knowing the idea behind their development.

    • @BBC – I am not bashing the prof. I have heard so much about his accomplishments from the Zambian media and bloggers like you. I have seen his CV. It does not include the accomplishments that you mention. I have not found anything of substance on the internet such as patents or pioneering research work. In the UK, I do not see peer recognition such as Fellowship of major professional institutions (e.g. IME). Can you point me where to look. You seem to know.

  41. Prof. should not have any problem, is he guilty or not that is all there is to ask. looking at the case it is him who has prolonged it to his wish. Let him clean himself. He is not the first Zambian to be prf. even then justice should apply to all evenly, and he should be one to advocate for that

  42. BBC,

Careful young man before you make a fool of yourself by commenting on matters you have limited knowledge of. The “silly bafoon (sic) Max Mbizo” you are referring to worked with Clive at UNZA in the mid-1980s. At that time Clive had just obtained a master’s degree from the Soviet Union and the “silly bafoon Max Mbizo” already had a PhD from the US. Clive briefly lectured in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at UNZA before migrating to the UK where he eventually completed his PhD.

This buffoon is not involved in Clive’s legal problems or as you insinuate or “admiring other countries” whatever that means. Neither is this buffoon “wallowing in poverty”. This “silly bafoon (sic) Max Mbizo” just wants to put the record straight.

  43. Professor, denounce it by all means if it means you will be free. Zambia is turning from a failed state into a dictatorship under PF. Leave while you can, and we will join you when we can.

    #OneZambia

  44. PLEASE PROF DONT DO THAT,ZAMBIA WILL BE FINISHED,ZAMBIA NEEDS YOU MORE THAN ANYHING,IF YOU STAY INZAMBIA THEY WILL CLEAR YOUR NAME AND YOU CAN GT BACK YOUR JOB OR EVEN BECOME PRESIDENT IN 2016…DONT DO THAT PLIZ PROFESSOR…
