A 45-year-old man has been severely beaten and his vehicle burnt to ashes by irate villagers after he hit and injured a pedestrian along the Kapiri Mposhi-Ndola road.
Central Province Commissioner of Police Standwell Lungu confirmed the incident to ZANIS which happened yesterday around 19:00 hours at Fibawe area in Kapiri Mposhi district.
Mr Lungu said the driver of a Toyota Noah motor vehicle registration number AAH 3649 identified as Juda Mwando travelling to Ndola was cornered by irate villagers after he stopped to help his victim whom he had hit.
“He was ambushed and beaten severely and had his vehicle burnt to ashes by a mob of angry villagers when he stopped to help the victim whom he had hit,” Mr Lungu said.
Both the driver and the accident victim who sustained head injuries have been admitted to Kapiri Mposhi District Hospital where they are nursing serious injuries.
Mr Lungu said police have since launched a man hunt to arrest the villagers who will be charged with arson.
Meanwhile, Mr Lungu has urged people not to take the law in their own hands and has advised them to always follow the right procedure whenever they are aggrieved.
“We don’t encourage mob justice… people should always follow the right way of handling such cases as of now we have launched investigations and a manhunt to arrest villagers who participated in the beating up of the driver and arson,” Mr Lungu said.
And a 14-year-old girl died on the spot after being hit by a vehicle along the Ndola -Kapiri Mposhi highway.
The girl identified as Rona Mwaba of Kasapato village in Kapiri Mposhi was hit by a vehicle Toyota Carina registration number ACP 9861 around 19:00 hours last night.
And property worth thousands of kwacha was yesterday destroyed in an inferno that swept through an electrical appliances repair shop around 23:30 hours.
The fire suspected to have been triggered by an electric fault was however quenched by the Kapiri Mposhi Council Fire Brigade before it spread to other nearby shops.
Property that included Television sets, home theaters and many other household electrical appliances were burnt to ashes.
Makes me to understand why some drivers run away after hitting someone. This practice of instant mob justice must end.
@soulosi
in Zambia, if you hit a pedestrian, even it was the pedestrian who was wrong, you are better off ´running` yourself to the police.. leave that injured victim otherwise you will lose your life
if you not understand, go to matero and try
Ha ha ha.Yalibako tricky kanshi.
mr lungu, who told u when u hit someone u have stop in uncivilised zambia? u wud have lost yo life big man. learn a lesson: when u hit someone, don’t stop and just drive directly to the nearby police station, report the matter then take the police to scene. otherwise, muzaafa ka.
quiet amazing though, a council fire brigade managed to quench an inferno in zambia, surprised mwe! its either keep it up or maybe it was a kantemba (not a big shop) hehe lol
Unfortunately in the act of running away you commit another offence.
Sorry for the loss of life, but it is not correct to always think that the driver was wrong in such cases , sometimes it is the pedestrians who could either be drank wobbling in the road , or be under some other influence . How ever destroying some ones property , some one must be held accountable and pay for the cost
According to the details in this story there was no loss of life…….
There are three stories if you read to the end, the second last story talk about a 14 Year Old girl who run over and died just yesterday!
Unfortunately in Zambia, it seems as though roads are owned by zamfooters(pedestrians). These people have no respect for motorists as they walk on roads with no regards for other road users. They even expect motorists to give them way.
I love civilisation in some of these foreign nations.
hence am in UK and a british citizen…useless zambi canrot
Ubupuba,,,,UBUWELEWELE bwamoneka……a cow will always be a cow,no matter what happens.
I wish that motorist could’ve been Sata.If Sata was on fire and i had a gallon of water,i would drink it.
Hahaha,ati you’d rather do what?
too bad
..then as motorists we are found in a situation were u have to choose between a frying pan and fire….high way code requires a driver to stop at an accident scene and help….if u leave the scene you are in trouble with a serious traffic offence. On the other hand you have to face mob justice…….traffic police please advise
Bad sign that we still run on primitive village instincts rather than organized, respectful, lawful and civilised approach. Are we africans serious that we wanna be respected by others?
No! we are too bushy for that. Let’s go back to swinging in the trees and playing catch the monkey!
the villagers in this story ve taught me a lesson… Never stop after hitting someone more so a villager. These underprivaledged cant think. How do you burn a car for someone who has stopped?
It’s not just in the villages you guys. I witnessed the same in Lusaka and Kitwe. Drivers are even advised by some police officers to run for their lives. For when I hit a goat in Zambezi i thought of stopping but one of my passengers advised me not too because the Lundas of Chief Ishindi would have braiied me. For them even if you hit their chicken then you are in for it.
lol, so funny – they will be like imbiji ya mwata inanoni
So if i hit an *****,i shouldnt bother helping stopping? No wonder theze kombonik swine live in villages
