The opposition Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) has accused the Patriotic Front (PF) government of causing unnecessary parliamentary by-elections in order to wipe out its (MMD) seats from parliament.

Acting MMD president Michael Kaingu said his party was not comfortable with the spate of the nullification of its seats by the Supreme Court.

But the PF has denied the accusations saying it had no interference into the judiciary which is nullifying parliamentary seats that were won out of undue influence.

The opposition MMD, which ruled Zambia from 1991 to 2011, has so far lost 10 parliamentary seats on grounds of corruption perpetuated by its candidates in the 2011 polls.

Dr. Kaingu has since called on the civil society organisations to support it defend the remaining 25 seats it holds in the house.

The Acting MMD leader, who was flanked by vice president for Administration, Brain Chituwo, director of communications in the office of the president Muhabi Lungu and MMD national information and publicity secretary Alfred Ndhlovu, was speaking at a press briefing held at the party’s secretariat in Lusaka today.

He expressed fears that the MMD would find it difficult to dialogue with the ruling PF if it continued losing seats in parliament.

“Parliament is the number one tool to fight draconian laws. We have 25 seats to defend and we call upon the CSOs to support us. We passed laws in the House in 2013 and can you imagine if MMD loses 25 seats in parliament,” Dr. Kaingu said.

On the constitution making process currently being undertaken by the technical committee on drafting the constitution, Dr. Kaingu charged that the PF government was not in a hurry to give the people of Zambia a new constitution that will stand the test of time.

Meanwhile, Brian Chituwo has implored the PF government to unconditionally reinstate the nurses that were fired at the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) and other health centres across the country.

But the ruling PF has maintained that it has no hand in the operations of the judiciary and therefore it had nothing to do with the nullification of parliamentary seats.

PF Secretary General and Minister of Justice Wynter Kabimba reiterated the PF government’s commitment to stamp out corruption in the country.

Mr. Kabimba has since commended the Supreme Court for nullifying the former ruling party’s seats which were corruptly won due by the MMD.

On the health sector, Health Minister Dr. Joseph Kasonde recently said government has recruited and replaced the sacked health personnel.

Dr. Kasonde maintained that the fired nurses erred in participating in the illegal strike, which was contrary to the professional calling of saving lives of the people.

    • We cannot just have 25 bye-elections just like that without realising the root-cause of such nullification of corrupt 2011 Elections which MMD wanted to win by all means. Now that we are in this fix all contesting parties PF and MMD inclusive should not use corruption to win next elections in the vacant constituencies.

    • If this is the calibre of leadership we have, we are truly doomed.

Corruption and bride-giving had become endemic during the MMD tenure of office. Kitenge, T-shirts and bicycles became the currency.

If this !mbecile can forget the root cause of all this non-sense, he is irredeemably lost and not fit to be in the seat he occupies.

  3. Whenever the PF government sings the song of wipping out corruption in Zambia, the Almighty God and His Holy Angels in the heavens mourns because the PF administration is the most corrupt not only in Africa but almost the entire world. Their hearts is the dwelling place for the devil and his angels.
