The Zambia Police Service has warned the opposition United Party for National Development (UPND) of punitive action if they go ahead with their planned public protest scheduled for next Wednesday.

The UPND had announced plans to hold a public protest to press government to address the economic challenges facing the people of Zambia.

In a letter to the UPND obtained by QFM News, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Nelson Phiri has advised the party not to proceed with their intentions of having a public protest because police are engaged in other important duties during this period.

Meanwhile UPND Deputy Secretary General, Kuchunga Simusamba, has told QFM in an interview that the party will go ahead with its planned public protest despite the failure by police to grant them permission to do so.

Mr. Simusamba says the statement by the Deputy Commissioner of Police that the police have other important things to do is an insult to the party.

He says it is unfortunate that the Zambia Police does not understand the principle of democracy and that it is for this reason that the party is going ahead with its planned public protest on Wednesday next week.

    • abeenaa! Undi is the Paramount Chief of the Chewa people of Eastern Province of Zambia, Malawi and Tete Province of Mozambique. His Kingdom has roughly 10 million people. He is strictly non partisan. Associating his name with that of Ukwa is not fair! Don’t drag his name into Ukwa’s mess, please, I beg you abeenaaa……..!

  2. more important things? like blocking GBM and ministers ai? I’ve never really been interested in politics until PF came into power, they’re one hopeless bunch!

  3. Things fall apart for the PF government. Fighting so many battles all at once. One cant even tell whether these battles are on government agenda or personal. If in a home, the children, the wife, the dependants are aginst you and only the maid and some friends are on your side, just know that you are in big trouble!

  4. Other engagements like…like sampa wrote on his facebook page not from his head but quoting Bob Marley ‘You can fool some people some time but you can’t fool them all the time’!

  5. What a useless government! They seriously don’t have anything better to do with their time??!!!!!!!!!! PF HAS TO GO!!

  6. What a useless government! They seriously don’t have anything better to do with their time??!!!!!!!!!! PF HAS TO GO!!

  7. These demonstrations are misplaced. No one will listen to them but if they demonstrated against the constitution, that would have been more wise. 2016 elections will be won the constitution weather the old one which will give the PF advantage or the new one which of course will give the opposition advantage. Unfortunately our opposition parties are so dull to see that.

  8. The big question is,what will walking the streets of LSK carrying placards written with malasha bring about? That is noise pollution and inconveniencing motorists.Muka vimenye bwana mwamene umo mumutu muli “ma degree” kumenya. By the way, does anyone know HH’s wife and please if you can avail a picture because it would be crazy to have a mystery first lady if fate was to bring HH into state house.

  9. Zambia Police Servive, so you want to teargas, beat up and shoot protesters again. What we are experiencing is no different from what KK, Nyerere, Madiba, Matchel, Mugabe, Nkomo, Chitepo, Kapwepwe, Nkumbula, Nalumino Mundia, Sipalo, … the list is long,—- fought against. What is wrong with a controlled protest.

I would also suggest that the protesters include the constitution to their list of demands to the government. This is our government. It does not belong to the State and the Police alone. Come on. What makes you so scared of peaceful protests and meetings?? Just waht is it? Let us know so that we all rally behind our police service to fight this threat.
Stopping organised protests and public rallies is what brings “Arab spring kind” of strife which Zambians DO NOT WANT.

  10. The incompetence of Zambia Police Command is a danger to our peace. The PF government should really be careful about how this Police Service Command is handling the opposition. UPND is just one of many political parties in Zambia. Why should a UPND meeting or public protest be so scaring? No Cha Cha Cha will come out of this. Besides, we still have elections, peaceful elections as a means of appointing political leaders. UPND is not only competing with PF. There are other parties such as FDD, RP, MMD etc to contend with. It is not just PF vs UPND!!!

  11. It’ s only that Zambians are dull ‘cos you were forewarned that Sata is not the type which is fit to run a country. It’ s unfortunate that Zambia is blessed with a lot of f.o.o.l.s regardles of their education/ academic background. Honestly speaking, a man of Sata’ s calibre, what can he render to the development of a country going by mordern economic technologies which he does not understand ? It’ s only in Zambia but not other serious nations where Sata can be recognised for presidency. Even my second year University daughter if far much better than Sata.
