The opposition MMD has called for the immediate resignation of Justice Minister, Wynter Kabimba, following the establishment of a tribunal to probe allegations that he abused his office.
MMD Presidential Spokesperson, Muhabi Lungu, has told QFM News in an interview that it is prudent that Mr. Kabimba steps down in order to allow a thorough investigation of allegations of breaching the oath of secrecy in his capacity as a government Minister.
Mr. Lungu says the former ruling party set a good example when a tribunal was established to probe then Transport and Communications Minister Dora Siliya over allegations of abuse of office and corruption, who was told to resign until the tribunal concluded its probe.
He says if Mr. Kabimba cannot resign on moral grounds, President Michael Sata should relive him of his duties immediately.
And Open Society Foundation Executive Director Sunday Chanda has welcomed the appointment of High Court Judges Evans Hamaundu, Gertrude Chawatama and Justine Chashi to sit on the tribunal to look into the alleged abuse of office and breach of the oath of secrecy by Justice Minister Wynter Kabimba.
The tribunal has been set up by the Acting Chief Justice Lombe Chibesakunda after complaints that Mr. Kabimba used government information from the Solicitor General’s Office to prop up the Patriotic Front in the court cases involving parliamentary seats which had been petitioned.
Mr Chanda says OSF is also happy that Mr. Kabimba has welcomed the tribunal.
He says it is now expected that Mr. Kabimba will resign from his ministerial position to enable the tribunal to conduct its job thoroughly and without any undue pressure being exerted.
He points out that precedent has been set to this effect in the case of the Dora Siliya Tribunal when she resigned from her ministerial position.
Mr Chanda says this is expected because ordinarily when such a thing happens, one needs to step aside depending on the evidence available.
He states that the Ministry of Justice is an interested party to the justice system and that it would be mockery to justice, if Mr. Kabimba does not resign on this matter.
The way to go! But knowing PF kaya?

That could be the most honourable thing for the Justice Minister but knowing him kaya! And King Cobra can’t even suspend him……
We will watch and be waiting, if he never resigned when there was pressure for him to resign, do you think he can resign now? Where is the pressure now? The pressure on him to resign has died out and I still believe that you will talk and talk nothing will happen. This man will never resign.
Fred M’membe is in control here, what Fred will say to the president will stand. Period.
