Government, through the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, has delivered high-breed cattle for multiplication programme in Southern province aimed at increasing and improving cattle breed.
Southern Province Livestock Production Officer, Wakung’uma Muliyunda Mukumbuta, said the pure Brahaman breed will be sold to farmers after Cabinet approves the modalities of disposing of cattle once the programme is fully fledged.
Mr Mukumbuta told the National Agricultural Information Services in Sinazongwe that the cattle multiplication programme is carried out at Kanchindu Goat Multiplication Centre.
He stated that government procured 52 high-breed cattle in which 50 are female and two are bulls.
Mr Mukumbuta clarified that the high-breed cattle will be sold to farmers aimed at improving the local breeds which he described as having lower weight compared to the pure breeds.
He noted that the pure high-breed cattle weigh more than 500 kg when fully matured while the local breeds weigh 300 kg.
Mr Mukumbuta further noted that the good attributes of high-breed cattle also include fast maturing consequently commencing production early.
He explained that the oxen from pure breeds have more strength to be used for cultivating large portions of land subsequently resulting in increased crop production and productivity among small scale farmers.
And Sinazongwe District Agricultural Coordinator, Pachelly Maambo, noted that his office will consider starting the breeding programme for the cattle multiplication using artificial insemination.
Mr Maambo told the steering committee meeting chaired by Principal Fisheries Officer, Sydney Maboshe, that tendering for infrastructural construction that include houses at the breeding centre has been completed by the provincial Permanent Secretary’s office.

Positive development, its a step in the right direction. The livestock sector has the potential to contribute significantly to the GDP.
Interesting.
Introduction of new genotypes in local environments characterised by high incidences of disease and parasites.
The immediate positive effect is the anticipation improvement of a single trait(Growth or size).
Globally we are concern with the erosion of local genotypes and any program should at inception involve the local communities otherwise such programs have failed.
The govt needs design a strong breeding objectives i.e flexible and all inclusive.
The overall productivity is complex phenomena (P=G+E+EG interactions).
Are the people in that area what Brahman cattle? and what trait is more preferred?
In Namwala, yes. They have demonstrated the local capacity.
Anyway LT thus Friesians crosses and not Brahman
Very good HH for this development, You are doing well I wish you could have been appointed minister of Agriculture! When either Dr Kaseba or Chipimo are president, they should remember to put people on ministrial posts that they have experience in.
What’s up Cindy all you dream about is HH! Even where the story has nothing to do with him you can’t help yourself but mention his name. Did he turn you down or you are paid to ridicule him at any juncture?
He turned me down and for that he will pay! Hihihihihihi, I was just kidding, nothing of the sort, infact I just wanted to stir the water, maybe I should have used Kabimbas name!
Ba tonga, don’t do Wajata Ngómbe on the new cows…
Any chance of hydrids of politicians to improve our current breed. If we could breed some that were not thieves, sex addicts and sadist opportunists it would be good.
@ Cindy….
U think Chipimo can b the President of this Country u r JOCKING. ONLY Bwalya & HH r credible people to lead this country.
I LOVE BWALYA COZ he is FEARLESS & HH bcoz he is a POWERFUL MANAGER in Zambian HISTORY.
Let tht stick in your SMALL HEAD.
OVER CATTLES thts a good move THUMB UP PF.
Viva Bwalya Viva HH viva UPND.
@ G,
Maybe we could give Mr Chipimo a benefit of doubt dont you think ? I for one some how think there is some thing in him that is President material, just his stature takes my breath away, he seems so together, never desperate, calm and collected, I think he would represent well on an international level. Maybe its time we had such a leader we’ve never had,I would for sure vote for him.
Father Bwaly is just the way you have described him, though a piece of me doesnt trust him fully, if convinced in the coming months, I would vote for him, HH, I like but not the people around him and did away with ZWD. If he had Chipimo, Fr Bwalya, Dr Mumba, GBM, Dr Kaseba, Maureen Mwanawasa, Dora and Myself, surely he would be our Obama!
This is rubbish 52 cattle is too small even to warrant making a story. In southern province young boys own more than 100 cattle so what will the modalities of selling 50 cattle in th entire province be. Source of corruption here
But it depends what type? For the bulls the number is significant mind you ” a Bull is half the herd”
I am a bit concerned with the cows, it is a waste of money?
You introduce a cow and will only give birth to possible three stunted calves.
Govt needs bulls which can mate with the local cows and not vice versa.
Where are the advices kasi?
Very interesting topic. I am a layman but I believe these are strides in the right direction as long as the program is sustainable and objectives maintained. Those of you who understand this better what is high-breed type? How different is it from hybrid cattle?
High – breed, they trying to refer to high performing animal support by their data that compare 500 to 300
Hybrid these are progeny that result from cross bred animals between two different breeds.
Yet, we still argue that high breed in terms of what? have a 500 kg animal that does not survive because of poor food and disease or have 300 that can produce and survive and produce another 300
Good strategies need to put in place for such program to sustainable and viable.
Concerns are the dip tanks etc
This is is very sicknening. 50 cows are not something to write about when the country has a lot of cattle of very good breeds. If you want to develop the country please talk about big numbers. Go to Choma and you will find Hamaleka farm has thousands of Brahmans and now as a goverment you only have 50 cows. If you have stolen some already do not provoke and insult people with useless projects
PALI INCHITO YA NGOMBE
2 BULLS FOR 50 YABA.
But those r friesians in the picture and not brahmans as reported, plz let us verify facts
Ma jelasi!
Most female breeding cattle produce one calf per year. The use of embryo transfer (ET) allows a producer to quickly multiply the genetics of the top females in the herd in addition to gaining genetic improvement from purchasing the best semen that is available that comes with using artificial insemination (AI). By multiplying the best genetics in females and using semen from bulls with high genetic merit, calves with superior genetics are produced. Females in the herd with less desired genetics can serve as recipients for the embryos and the overall genetic quality of the herd may quickly be drastically improved.
Embryo transfer requires two components: generating and then obtaining (flushing) the embryos from the donor female and transferring each embryo into a different female…
