A pit latrine

A one month old baby boy was discovered in the early hours of this morning in a pit latrine in Kyawama Township in Solwezi. The baby, which was wrapped in a chitenge material, was covered with human waste and maggots all over its body. The baby boy was discovered by the owners of the pit latrine after one of them went to answer the call of nature in the morning.

Asah Kaputula said she went to answer the call of nature when she heard a baby crying from the pit latrine.
Ms Kaputula said she informed other members of the house and with the help of neigbours, mobilised themselves and demolished the structure.

She said the baby was rushed to the hospital after retrieving it from the pit latrine. The mother of the baby is unknown.

Solwezi General Hospital Public relations officer Levy Muna confirmed the admission of the baby at the hospital.
Mr Muna said the baby was being treated for hypothermia as he was exposed to cold temperatures for a long time.
Mr Muna said the baby was being kept in an incubator and described his condition as stable. He said it was shocking and unfortunate that one would dump a baby when others were longing to have one.

  1. What kind of a foolish woman would dump her baby in a disgusting pit latrine. She is either psychotic or in a very desperate situation.Perhaps Zambia needs to have baby shelters where unwanted babies can be anonymously dropped off. God has a plan for that baby.He just might be a president one day.

    • Situations happens. Zambia needs to establish safe haven laws where unwanted babies can be taken by mothers. It will lessen these kinds of occurrences. Young mothers need that kind of support. In this case find the owner of the chintenge

    • @Ex-moma (trans-gender),
Do you have an example of a PRESIDENT who might have survived toilet-dumping? I wish your illusions would take you to imagine that ” the baby may end-up growing and enjoy his father’s glory like Kazimu”.

    • @Ex-moma, my apologies. Sorry sorry sorry. I didn’t mean to, just that “moma” I read like “ex-woma”.
The story itself is so sad and annoying, kulatukilamo even good people like “Ex-moma”.

    • @nostradamus …appology accepted.’ Moma’ was the term ascribed to female students at the university of Zambia. Therefore Ex-moma = Ex- female unza student

  2. Thank God the baby survived. That woman will not find joy, she will be haunted by a guilt conscience all her life. Now I wonder how you have a picture of a smiling boy to such a terrible story?

    • @Cindy,
That’s the best Zambia has been able to offer to citizens in the past half-a-century.
      Happy 50th Anniversary Zambia!

    • @Cindy, you know sometimes people WISH their children not to end-up like someone they hoped could be inspiration. When someone IMAGINE that her child looks and may end-up be a KAZIMU Sata, they may react in such worse way as dumping such a boy.
My dog limps because I kicked it, instead of Kabimba, just an innocent dog. Things happen.

  3. May God deliver the hard hearted woman responsible and forgive her sin. Whatever drove her to such an extreme????

  4. That baby boy will be great when he grows up. Probably, he will be president of Zambia one day.

  5. Some bloggers ,have nothing to say on this site. Please find something, to do in life than preaching hatred all the time. I’ts not normal for anybody to talk ill of one person out of 13 million Zambians everyday, every second, minute, hour and so on and so forth. Its sata, kazimu, mulenga and sata again and again. That’s madness find time to go to church and meet people and chat with them. This level of hatred is leading some of you to lunacy, eventually you will commit suecide. You can’t bring every topic on sata even if it’s not related. The story is about a woman having dumped her baby in a pit latrine and not kazimu sata. Why bring in these people. The issue of pit latrines is not new to Zambia and has not been brought abot by Sata and pf. Unip and mmd left the problem. Think…

  6. This is 2014 some 30 years since HIV was first discovered in Zambia and ladies are still having unprotected sex with men who can not marry them or take care of their babies. Stay away from sex before marriage or get that condom and use it every time you have sex.
I hope the police find this attempted murderer.

  7. this is so sad, not giving the woman an excuse but it maybe because her very bad situation caused by the poorly ran government!!!!!!!!!!
    thank GOD the baby survived.
