DIVISIONS in the former ruling MMD having continued to take a toll with the party Copperbelt leadership now daring those calling for an extraordinary convention to reconsider their position or leave the party.

The MMD top brass who included the two vice presidents, Michael Kaingu for political and his counterpart for administration Brian Chituwo together with party spokesperson Dora Siliya have demanded that an extraordinary convention be convened to allow the National Executive Committee to put in place a new leadership.

But the Copperbelt MMD leadership said calls for an extraordinary convention were misplaced because Dr Mumba’s mandate runs up to 2015.

Briefing the press after a provincial meeting held in Kitwe on Saturday attended by representatives from all the districts on the Copperbelt, provincial party chairperson Joseph Zulu said those trying to hound out leader Nevers Mumba should abandon their maneuvers or leave the party themselves.

Mr Zulu who was reading the meeting resolutions said the province was solidly behind party leader Dr Mumba.

“We have resolved that the two vice presidents and other people calling for an extraordinary convention to stop issuing statements through the media.

“We have said no to an extraordinary convention until Nevers Mumba completes his term and those who are not ready to work with him should leave the MMD,” Mr Zulu said.

He said the Dr Kaingu and his counterpart Dr Chituwo including Ms Siliya and other people calling for an extraordinary convention should not think that they were more important than the party.

Mr Zulu said MMD was more important than individuals because just like others, they would leave but the party would remain.

“What we are telling them is to come back to the fold but if they don’t want, we are saying let them go and we don’t mind them leaving because we have had other leaders who have gone and MMD has remained,” Mr Zulu said.

Notable people present included party Copperbelt women’s chairperson Edith Mataka and provincial information and publicity secretary Yotam Mtayachalo, who surprisingly appeared in a low mood.

It was however discovered afterwards that some members including Mr Mtayachalo were strongly for the holding of an extraordinary convention.

Effort to get a comment from both Dr Kaingu and Dr Chituwo failed as their mobile phones were outside coverage areas while Ms Siliya’s number went unanswered.

  1. Yes yes we from the Copperbelt are saying let those calling for the convetion leave the party now, they are causing confusions. It is them that have failed because they do not want to support their president. They are just power hungry, Dr. Mumba has sacrificed a lot for this party, the moment he is removed the party will be history. So if they do not want to work with DR. Mumba let them leave the in peace. why are they failing to go?

  2. Copperbelt that is the way to go. Some of these people have been bought by PF. Dora has no good moral standing for her to call for Mumba’s resignation. She is fighting Mumba for her own survival with regards to the cases labeled against her.

  3. Dr Kaingu and his counterpart Dr Chituwo including Ms Siliya are not true MMD or founders.AKA and Mbita Chitala should come back.

  4. These MMD chaps who are calling for an extra ordinary convention think that if Nevers is replaced by the likes of Chituwo or the Lozi man Kaingu the Party will tick?? Honestly?

  5. The steps being taken by Dr. Chituwo, Silya, Dr. Kaingu are steps clearly delineate the MMD as the the biggest opposition party in Zambia and begin to position UPND as such- this is in view of the upcoming bye elections for Petauke (Siliya) Solwezi Central (Mulusa) as these feel- if the courts ruled to allow them stand- they are better positioned to win under the UPND- I also think that their acts premised on taking the MMD out of the game rather than re organizing it so the position UPND stronger for for 2016- I strongly think PF has nothing to do with this but UPND has something to with this-

  6. Which people was Dora referring to as all the provinces have endorsed the removal of MUMBA? Dora has no morals indeed. What can come out of KAINGU also? This is a man at his age in polygamy. This is a man who cant manage to keep his family in a Godly way.

  7. As a former ruling party you should be seen to be upholding the guidelines of your constitution. Unless there are very good reasons to terminate the tenure period of the current leadership, person interests should come second to that of the party. CB well done for the resolution that you took. A good opposition is good for our country to avoid a situation where one mad man will bulldoze everyone in the political arena.
So MMD put your house in order, we need you in the Zambian political scene because you have brought us this far. The PF are just swimming in your past Economic foundation the kwacha would have been worse than it is now if it was not for a solid economic foundation and national reserves that you left after the 2011 general elections.

  8. Dora should have supported Dr Mumba, am afraid she may have blown up her chances in MMD. Politicians should learn to be clean and patient then we would tell were they actually stand. Such acts of desperation are an indication of someone being power hungry which is a root cause for poor governance once in power!
