A one year baby died after being accidentally run over by a vehicle while at church in Kitwe last Saturday.
The baby was run over within the Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) church premises in Ipusukilo Township by a Fan Cargo vehicle which had been parked there.
The toddler, left its parents side while the service was in progress and went to play behind the vehicle which was within the church premises.
Without noticing the toddler, the driver, Peter Ndonji, 30,of Ipusukilo Township started reversing the vehicle and accidentally ran over the baby. The baby sustained head injuries and died on the spot.
Copperbelt police commissioner Joyce Kasosa appealed tp parents to take care of their children.
“Like I have said before, my appeal to parents and guardians is that they need to be more caring when it comes to securing the safety of little ones because here is one-year-six months-old baby who is excited about walking and is let free without the parent keeping an eye on it,” Ms Kasosa said.
This is very sad. The poor mother made a serious mistake not the driver
@St Mary Magadalena: Not surprising is it ! What a stupid comment from a stupid moron and im.becile like you! Stuck in the stone age and colonial past, Zambian Laws still do not recognise the existence of pedestrians and non drivers who are treated as second class citizens – strange!
Drivers should always exercise a duty of care and this ***** of a chimp, started a vehicle without checking both within and around the vehicle even for his own safety! What if somebody had planted a bomb underneath the front wheel? How did he get his drivers’ license if he cant do these basics?
And you mo.ther fuc.kers – Dont be stupid to blame the mother. That kid had every right to play in the Church Yard! It is the driver who is at fault here and deserves a death sentence – in civilised countries
Chilyata, chill exsay! It unrealistic to expect us to always check around and underneath our vehicles before turning the engine on. Children are under the custody of their parents and whether you like it or yes, the mother was reckless in letting the child be on its own
Chilyata iwe who checks underneath their vehicle before they drive?
@My Opinion:
In England we do and you have to get used to doing it before anyone can let you loose to drive on the Highways.
And you would also do if you are in the USA for your own security? These are driving basics just like you would NOT set your foot on the peddle in the snow without checking around.
That’s why there is such high number of fatal accidents in Zambia – most of the bloo.dy drivers are incompetent and a danger to the public!!
MHSRIP too bad
Both parent and driver error, the driver should have checked his mirrors or surrounding before reversing, and those parents also, why so careless, whether in prayers or what, eyes would have been on the child at all times…
@Maurice-You are a fool. Side mirrors and rear view mirrors can only view so much. The child was probably the last thing th driver expected behind his car, especially while th church was in progress. and if a child is behind the car, it is almost impossible to tell.
Maurice, uli itole sana ayi?
Rear view mirrors won’t show you what is underneath.
Ba General Gustav do you have a driving licence? Before you get your licence you are told to check mirrors and blind spots before moving your car. The driver is always responsible for whatever the car does.
I dont think any one should be blamed here. It was an accident. Very sad indeed. Sometimes we should not rush to blame people just because something bad has happened. My heart is touched by the death of an innocent child. My dear boy, we will meet again when Emanuel comes back to take us home.
which emmanuel naimwe? oh, you mean the lies told you it by the whites?
that’s why emmanuel decided to kill the baby? still believing in lies
let us be happy because the child is on the save side. Question is, will you be ready to meet the child or going to ask a lot of non sense question. The lord has give and take. We are a steward. This is my prayer that the child parents will be glad to meet the boy when our Savior return.
..one needs more info than what has been said above to make any meaningful comprehension of what really happened….Was the mother inside the Church building while the toddler was under the care of other toddlers outside…??? or maybe just among other toddlers outside…?…If toddlers were playing around then the driver should have taken keen interest to check all around the vehicle before jumping in….. One year old baby is almost like a new iPhone 5 or a Samsung 5.. one cannot afford to lose site of it for a minute. As soon as the engine was started, the natural mother instinct could have sent the mother into a panic mode..
..of all places,,tragic of such magnitude to occur at Church premises..? Its one of those phenomena God has deprived humans to comprehend…
Can’t believe there are still Zambians who will talk rubbish about Jesus Christ. And who is the one comparing IPhone 5 and samsung phones withe the life of a child???
This world is changing so fast !,
..@michaelme
…I think u missed my point bro….how can a phone be compared with a human life..??
my point was to do with attitude. U cannot deny the fact about the way we value and jealously guard our phones…especially very expensive phones…the way u are interpreting my version is as if I’m holding a baby in one hand and the phone in another…when I tumble I would let go the baby and hold on to my phone….???..I have two children and I hope u are a father too….Please read thru my earlier posting twice or three time to appreciate what I was trying to deliberate.
That driver needed to be careful especially in public places, you don’t just back up and go without making sure you are all clear, now this will taunt him for rest of his life, Zambian drivers need to be taught to have foot on brake when backing up if he had his foot on the brake he would have felt it the moment he hit that baby now running him over meant he was full throttle on gas peddle
We mourn for you! May the soul of the dear baby rest in eternal peace in the presence of the Lord! God’s confort surround the parents and family!!!
I think this is a wakeup call to both drivers and parents. This is a very sad and serious occurance of which people should not joke about. I’m really sorry to the parents of the deceased toddlers. May its soul rest in eternal peace. I’m in Zimbabwe.
