A 28 year old man of Chililabombwe has been shot and injured by Chilabombwe council and police in a joint operation of killing stray dogs.

Edison Banda, 28, a workman at Lubambe Copper Mines (LCM), was on Monday evening accidentally shot in the leg as he was leaving his friend’s place between 18:30 and 19:00 hours.

Chililabombwe District Commissioner Stuart Chitumbo and Chililabombwe Mayor Paul Kabuswe confirmed the incident to ZANIS after visiting the victim at his hospital bed.

Narrating the incident from his hospital bed, Banda, who sustained gunshot wounds on his right leg, said he suddenly developed some strange pain on his leg only to later discover that he was shot.

Banda who has since undergone an operation to remove the shotgun pellets added that he also heard the screams of a dog in the neighbourhood.

The Council and Police staff involved in the operation did not realise that they had shot a person and just picked the dead dog and left.

The local authority had sought permission from Police to conduct the operation of shooting stray dogs but it has since been suspended as Police has opened an inquiry file to ascertain the actual cause of the incident.

  1. This is inhumane (and dangerous). Look to India to see what they did to reduce their stray population. Spaying and neutering (sterilising) works much better to control numbers and does not kill the dogs.

  2. “…heard the screams of a dog in the neighbourhood…” Yuk! Learn this from me again LT: Dogs don’t scream – they YELP – humans scream! Goodness, journalism from the dustbins!!!!

  3. Copper and all other minerals have been sold to KCM & LCM, now the PF government resort to hunt dogs and sell to the Chinese investors. I hope they have put windfall taxes on them.

  4. …is this a bed time story for the kids or what…..???
‘..accidentally shot…’…mitigates the officers. Supposed it was a baby crawling around, it could have been something else… fatal….,Such operations in high density areas must be done professionally with maximum safety precautions.

    ‘…around 1830 to 1900hrs..’…why that late…??

‘…heard dog ‘scream’….’…did not hear the gun shot…??

”…just picked the dead dog and left….’…if it was a single bullet, then the weapon must have been powerful and at a short range for the bullet to kill the dog and end up in the guy’s leg….

The heard of operation and the officer who handled the gun must be locked up pending investigations. Its time we became serious as a people….

  5. @ Dontcare: What difference does it make whether the breed is Zambian (whatever you mean by that) or not? A dog, whatever the breed, is still a dog.

    • @ Uwauma nafyala, in fact it is small wonder that we take ownership over things that we have no control over. I was also wondering in any case what the heck a “Zambian” dog means…

  6. It is becoming increasingly painful to read Zambian news reports. They are riddled with factual errors, grammatical errors, and at worst, they contain pure speculation. “an professional”, a dog that “screams” – these are basic tenets of report writing that is primary school grade… It is small wonder I keep reading “they” when someone means “there” in most cases…

  7. Its actually a shot gun pellet not a bullet. Depending on the type of shot shell, it comprises of many pellets fired in a single shot. Types include AA, SG,LG etc.

  8. ummh sorry i missed out here where is the caption of ” the dog screamed ” can not see any of that in the story above or do i have a problem with my eyes?
