President Michael Sata pardons 365 prisoners

President Michael Sata has pardoned 365 prisoners from various prisons across the country as part of the Africa Freedom Day Celebrations.

Mr. Sata exercised this through the powers vested in him by article 59 of the constitution of Zambia.

Copper belt Province recorded the highest number of freed prisoners totalling 88, followed Central Province with 56 prisoners pardoned.

Eastern province had 49, Western Province had 47, Southern Province had 34, Luapula Province 22 , Lusaka Province 21,North-Western Province 20, Muchinga Province 18,while Northern Province recorded the lowest number with 15 prisoners pardoned.

The Republican President freed the prisoners during the investure ceremony marking Africa Freedom Day at State house, this morning.

And President Sata has honoured and awarded 11 Zambians with the Presidents Medal for Gallantry, the companion order of freedom and the order of distinguished service.

Justine Muwana was awarded at State House with the Presidents Medal for Gallantry award while Cyprian Mulonda, Roy Chilshe, Paul Jere, Frank Mulenga, Chief Nkambo, Monica Chitu, Veronica Mumba and Doris Chimanyika were awarded and honoured with a companion order of freedom first division.

Those that were awarded with the order of distinguished service first division were Gibby Nawa posthumously and Dr. Mutumba Bull.

Meanwhile President Michal Sata this morning led Cabinet Ministers , Diplomats, and high commissioners accredited to Zambia in laying wreaths at the freedom statue as part of the African Freedom Day celebrations.

The President who arrived at the Freedom statue at 10:15 hours was welcomed by Defence and Service Chiefs and later proceeded to greet Cabinet Ministers and their Deputies .

President Sata later had a jovial moment with former President Rupiah Banda and other Leaders of the opposition political parties who were present.

The laying of wreaths and the investiture ceremony was later preceded by celebrations which were characterized with different forms of entertainment at the parked new Heroes Stadium.

Among those who attended the celebrations at the Heroes Stadium include, Defence Minister Edgar Lungu, Community Development Mother and Child Health Minster Emerine kabanshi, Tourism and Arts Minister Jean Kapata and the Mayor of the City of Lusaka Mulenga Sata.

  1. In May 2012 the figure stood at 2578 prisoners released by the Facebook President…one can only imagine what the figure is today.

    • What is the hidden agenda, behind the freeing of 2000+ criminals into the general society ? Is there a bigger plan for these rampant pardons? Maybe these criminals will be used to clamp down on people’s freedoms, as we approach 2016??? Here is something to go be paranoid about fellow Zedians!!

  3. he knows they will vote for him in 2016…he is too sick to travel around the country, so this is a new method of campaigning….he will pardon many prisoners as possible before 2016,we all know how subtle Sata is…

  4. Sata has grown so old and frail just these few months.whatever is eating the health of our beloved president is deadly.PF members should advise our presido to step down on medical grounds.

  6. I wonder why this is shocking to some people.LPM also used to pardoned these criminals.). RB also pardoned them.now if RB did it,why can’t sata did also.should they just kept prisoners four years even if they stealed razor bread. Late us bee serious guys. Donte just critism anyhow. Iam a PF sapota but this is too much of condeming sata.

    Kinda reminds me of traditional healers who say they can multiply your
    money when without doubt poor themselves!

  8. Good news ! Have heard that even my childhood best friend Fox has been released.365 prisoners that makes it one prisoner per day being pardoned since we have 365 days in a year.Cool !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Yes,what about 2016.As far as am concerned,its just like any other year only that i’ll be much oldrer for all i care..

  10. Crime levels will really go up these criminals are not accessed before they are released in Zambia. This is what happens when you have a leader who is not Educated he can not understand what i’m saying here.

    • Iwe koswe!Let me school you.For one to be pardoned,one must @least have done time and are of good character during incaceration.The correctional officer infact has to sign so as to reasure the president that such a person can be reintergrated into society.

  11. Yet he refusses yo pardorn nurses. Cobra is a danger to the mordern word. At one point man does not anymore add value to society. That is why death is important to cleans out people like cobra.

  12. M.C .Sata,365 prisoners and 365 days in a yr.Coincidence? I think not.Its divine sign that a couple more trips around the sun(365 days) we the abused voters won’t be pardoning Sata for his crimes against zambia.

  14. I doubt that ka extremely skinny man i saw on tv who failed to go open heroes stadium and also cut short the freedom day celebration will reach 2016.
