The opposition United National Independence Party (UNIP) has backed calls for the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) to be given more powers to disqualify any political parties engaging in violence in the course of elections.

The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) wants more powers to impose severe sanctions against political parties or individuals abrogating the Electoral Code of Conduct with impunity.

UNIP Vice President Njekwa Anamela has told QFM News in an interview that it is very dangerous to tolerate violence during campaigns and that the call by ECZ is a welcome move which should be supported by everyone.

Mr. Anamela says such measures as the ones proposed by ECZ should be taken into consideration if peace and tranquility should be promoted during the course of elections.

Mr. Anamela states that those that engage in violent are indirectly saying they are defeated and thus the reason for them to be disqualified without delay.

He says Zambia has been a peaceful nation and that it is important to endorse ideas aimed at preserving the peace and unity of the country.

  1. Who should give ECZ powers? PF govt/parliament controlled institutions. By the way how have you been UNIP, its been long.

  2. Hee! Which UNIP is this? It is still there and in existence. Oh no. When is the convention, I would like to stand as President. Is there a chance or it is reserved for somebody. And I am sure you are scooping 2016 especially in Northern Rhodesia. All the best!

  3. The first party to be di-registered must be PF. PF has the blood and the spirit of UNIP who came out because of it By Air boys during that time of KK’s down fall.

What I believe is in peace and when you look at what is prevailing today is that we are going that direction of Dictatorship.

    • UNIP is gone and we see its fruit in PF. From the beginning of PF even when it was in opposition, we saw its brutal beatings and insults. We all saw even during time of voting whereby its Leader shoulting at Mumbi saying ” Walitumpa you are an *****, Balekuponona abaice” , Imagine where was the ECZ and why did they not disqualify it?

God bless Zambians and the opposition must check all possible ways of removing the violence. I am sure now that the big threat to PF is UPND which leaders are all aware about it. One day voiceless shall be voice-full

  4. Epo ba ba Ba UNIP? History has not been kind to this party. One must nevertheless appreciate the loyalty of diehards like Anamela. Kafywa nayo.
