Share

The 2014 Barclays Cup kicks off on Saturday with two quarterfinal doubleheader over the next 48 hours at Nkoloma Stadium in Lusaka.

Three former winners, two derbies, an emotional reunion and a coaching debut in a cup tournament are some of the angles that lie in store in this years competition.

On Saturday, record three time Barclays Cup champions Zesco United meet Mufulira Wanderers in a lunchtime kickoff.

The match will see Zesco coach reunited with his former charges Wanderers whom he left in 1999 and won two league titles with as assistant coach in 1995 and 1996.

Wanderers are making their debut in Barclays Cup as one of the two Division One sides to make the cut after finishing top of their respective zones at the halfway point of the 2014 season.

And in the 15h00 kick off, a Lusaka derby will be played out when Lusaka Dynamos face 2012 Barclays Cup champions Napsa Stars in their Lusaka derby.

The match will also mark Dynamos coach perry Mutapa’s Barclays cup debut as coach in his first year on the job following his appointment this year.

Also lookout for his assistant Masauso Tembo.

The two life-long friends and ex-Dynamos players who were once touted as the future of Zambian football post-1996 will try to outwit Hector Chilombo on Saturday.

Meanwhile on Sunday, Lusaka will be treated to a rare Kitwe derby when two-time champions Power Dynamos and archrivals Nkana come to town.

Power coach Tennant Chilumba has been silent since the draws were made on Monday but quietly watched Nkana last Wednesday when they beat Roan United 2-1 at Nkana Stadium in Kitwe.

Sadly, the derby will eclipse the curtain-raiser that will see Zanaco face 2011 runners-up Konkola Blades.

Zanaco will be setting a tournament record with eight appearances but still without a Barclays Cup win.

Their best finish in the tournament was a second place finish in 2010 when they lost 2-0 to Zesco.
