FORMER Information Minister in the Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) under the late Chiluba regime Reverend Stan Stan Kristafor says he will strongly campaign for the United Party for National Development (UPND) President Hakainde Hichilema because of his maturity and clear policies.
Rev Kristofer said his desire was to see that there was an urgent need to change government on 20th January this year because the Patriotic Front (PF) government had failed to deliver to the expectations of many Zambians.
Speaking in Livingstone today during a press briefing when he officially announced his joining of the UPND, Rev Kristofer said among other things that the cost of living was high with the staple food of mealie meal at the highest price ever.
He also said that the costs of fuel and electricity were ridiculously high with high taxes deducted from workers payments.
Rev Kristofer further noted that there were high youth un-employment levels with no hope for the future, a thing he said Mr Hichilema would ably address.
“Foreign and local investors are closing businesses because of our hostile political and economic environment. Many job losses are looming due to fear of intimidation and uncertainty of what will come next. Investor confidence has been severely eroded,” Rev Kristofer said.
He said civil servants had not been paid their salary increments due to imposed harsh wage freeze contrary to the promises made by the PF during their campaigns before coming into power.
He said there was need for a mature leader who would accept divergent views because currently opposition political party politicians and other innocent people had been threatened and intimidated on trumped up charges.
“Journalists have been beaten up for simply doing their jobs and trying to report the truth. Press freedom is not being enjoyed in private media houses, and they have been threatened with closure, and their staff have been beaten,” Mr Kristofer said.
Mr Kristofer also condemned the invading of ZNBC by some government ministers whilst doing their job saying that was an infringement of press freedom.
He said the nation was in a severe crisis both economically and politically and that the statistics on the ground were frightening with the majority of youths living in abject poverty and squalor while the country had continued to have huge undeveloped natural resources going to waste.
And Livingstone UPND campaign manager Regina Musokotwane said Rev Kristofer had joined the party at the right time when they needed to embrace everyone.
Ms Musokotwane said it was unfortunate for people to say that Mr Hichilema would not perform as a president because he was not a politician.
She said the country’s economy was in a mess because politicians had failed to run the affairs of the country.
“People are saying HH has never been a politician, he has not even been a ward councillor, but we have politicians who are running this country who have messed this economy. HH is a focused businessman who has an agenda to develop this country,” Ms Musokotwane said.
But Acting PF Southern Province Chairman Charles Hamududu said Rev Kristafor was free to join any political party but was wrong to state that PF had mismanaged the economy.
In a telephone interview with ZANIS in Livingstone, Mr. Hamududu said government had not failed to pay the farmers and was addressing the situation.
He further stated that pockets of violence experienced in some parts of the country were perpetrated by the opposition as they were uncertain of winning the forthcoming Presidential Election.
“As for the issue of borrowing, we inherited a lot of problems from the MMD and for the record, we are not the first government to borrow from the international market,” he said.
Mr. Hamududu explained that government channeled the money it borrowed, to developmental projects such as building of schools, roads and infrastructure in the health sector.
He reiterated that PF had scored a number of successes especially in the area of infrastructure development since coming into power in 2011.
Where has he re-surfaced from? Endorsing has really become fashionable and just got better.
Two things are going to happen on the 21 of this month.
1. We will have a new president
2. It will either be HH or EL will win.
Whatever the result, please remember that these are just politics and the losers should remember that there will be another election soon. Mwansa Mbulakulima says the party is aware that Mr. Banda is allegedly using the party structures as his platform to campaign for the ruling PF.
Meanwhile the MMD Acting Chief Executive Officer has disclosed that he has written exculpatory letters to 15 party Members of Parliament campaigning for the UPND presidential candidate Hakainde Hichilema.
He says the Members of Parliament have been given up to 10th January to exculpate themselves.
These include among others Lunte Member of Parliament Felix Mutati and party national Chairman Kabinga Pande.
