THE Zambia Army has split the Commando Unit and formed a marine troop to be based in Kawambwa in order to stop abduction of Zambian citizens on water bodies the country shares with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Army Commander Paul Mihova said Government had authorised him to split the commando Unity in Ndola and form a marine unit in Kawambwa.

He said the purposed of splitting the Commando unit was to have a group of soldiers that will protect Zambian citizens from being abducted on the water bodies the country shares with DRC.

“Soldiers have already occupied the area, equipment has already been bought. We are just waiting for our suppliers to come and train us.

Very soon the commander in chief will be launching the marine unit,”
he said.

Gen Mihova said this when he paid a courtesy call on Copperbelt Minister Mwenya Musenge in Ndola yesterday.

The Army Commander is on the Copperbelt Province to interacts with soldiers and explain to them what Government was doing for the defense force.

Gen Mihova added that some marine soldiers will be deployed to lake Kariba,Zambenzi River, and in Kazungula in order to protect the water bodies.

He said he Zambia Army was in the process of setting a special school that will be training marine soldiers.

Meanwhile, Copperblet Minister Mwenya Musenge asked the Army Commander if his engineering squad in Mufulira can help the provincial administration in the construction of bridges in areas which get cut off during the rainy season.

Mr Musenge said Government was spending a lot of money on private contractors that offered shoddy works.

In response, Gen Mihova said his engineering squad was ready to help in the construction of bridges , culverts and drainages and asked the minister to go the ministry of defense when ever its needs their services.

  1. But why send the marine unit to Mumbwa as if the area has a river to facilitate training or it shares the border with DRC? Something is wrong here.

    • What about the illegal arms deal ? RB , lungu , Henry Banda and this Congolese govern ? We do know that’s illegal and we are counting your causes already ? Guess that General is involved TOO . Willian nsanda next defence minister .

    • @Shi Mpundu
This is not about the river. This is about expenditure, in other words its about having access to the government coffers without arousing any suspicion. What they have done is create a problem where there was none so they can spend and obtain kick backs where necessary. This unit will require arms, accommodation, uniforms, lets just say a whole separate budget. Someone tell me where funds for this venture will come from? Now, the whole arms deal saga with Henule Banda and cronies makes sense, and that is also why we are hearing about re-financing the Euro bond. Tell me someone in Kanyama and chawama understands all this so they can make an informed decision when voting in 2016.

Yes, you have hammered it. RB, Lungu & Katumbi have acquired arms & other weapons on the black market for bringing confusion in the country.
Its illegal to buy weapons of mass destruction from the black market, especially a govt for that matter. If people are still sleeping, these bandits will bring anarchy everywhere. The abduction of peoples? This should be left to special police forces because the army cannot interfere in the internal affairs of another country. Sovereignty is vital.
The gullible ones will believe the hoaxes. Why would a govt illegally acquire arms? Fishy things are on the horizon with RB at the helm of the visionless Lungu, Boko Haram will soon be camping in Zambia.
      Ignore at your own self!

    • @Beautiful Moma: Why in hell do some of you people want to complain and b!tch about everything? Are you telling me this is the first time you hearing about this initiative by the Army? And are you telling me you have NEVER heard of the frequent abductions of fellow Zambian citizens by Congolese rogue security forces on the waters we share with them? Zimbabwean security forces have also been a pain in the side of Zambian fishermen on lake Kariba for a long time now.

If you are unaware of these problems simply ask than trying to make up stories on issues you barely understand. I am sure the people in Luapula and Southern provinces who just want to fish in peace without the fear of being harassed/abducted will surely appreciate this move by their Govt/Army. Good heavens!

    • @yambayamba
Am a concerned citizen and talking about this doesn’t mean am b!tching about what I don’t know. And next time, please help me understand issues in a respectful manner. Don’t just throw insults at me because you are hiding behind a computer.
Its not a coincidence that just after word of the ‘arms’ deal is thrown out there, the commando unit splits. There have been complaints form citizens all along, some have even been detained in neighbouring countries. All the govt did was send someone to negotiate their release. I don’t believe in such coincidences.

    • By the way @Beautiful…, this initiative started during late M.C. Sata. This was after several abductions and shootings of Zambian fishermen by both DRC and Zimbabwean security forces took place. And citizens making a living fishing in these areas cried for security. So whatever you think is going on as far as the so called “arms deal”, it completely has nothing to do with the formation of an Army Marine unit.

If the Govt does NOT provide protection for its citizens from both internal and external trouble-makers (enemies) then what GOOD is the taxes you pay for? There is NO other function of any GOVT as serious as providing security to its citizens. Whether you agree with the current GOVT or not, at least be mature and sensible when commenting on national security.

    • Mumbwa and Kawambwa are 2 different locations naimwe. Kwambwa was chosen because its centrally located to the Mweru and Tanganyika lakes and also that they are using the infrastructure left by UNCHR

    • @Yambayamba
Thanks for the knowledge. I think I was mature enough when commenting on national security, just like you are.
There is no smoke without fire.

    • @Beautiful Moma, I apologize for using some corse languange.

But it has really become very difficult nowadays to discuss national issues when people seem to have scumbed to the allure of rumors and “gacha yo” politics/debate. If you go back only a few months ago, you will find that this issue was being discussed right here on LT following late Sata’s proposal to form this Marine unit after several incidences.

As you have correctly noted, the problem of abductions of our fellow citizens on these waters has gone on for far too long. And it is about time Govt took it seriously and did something about it. I think any responsible Govt can NOT keep tolerating neighbors who don’t seem to live by any civilized security protocols without risking looking weak and irresponsible!

    • It is Kawambwa and not Mumbwa. I haven’t seen Mumbwa here. I hope you know where Kawambwa is. Do not just criticize for the sake of it. I think the Army has done the right thing. It is long overdue. The Congolese were taking advantage of the absence of Marine units.

    • So the marine corp has been formed for the sole purpose of protecting Zambians against abduction by the Congolese people?
Hey can somebody explain to me what is this crap?

  2. Any additional security for protection of Zambian people and it’s borders is most welcome. The security wings should also consider use of drones in some of it’s operations for example, in combating poaching in national parks.

    • Ichalo Lifupa
Its actually what is happening. RB, Henule Mambala & visionless Lungu are on a gushy mission.
The visionless one is the defense minister & president at the same time, surely he is touching his own eyes with Wasabi~Hot Chili!
Henule Mambala is the most wanted man by PF for the dubious deals he allegedly conspired with Chief Mambala from Nigeria. Shocking to the fact that, the criminal on the run is now eating, dancing & dining with visionless Lungu. Junior Mambala illegally entered the country via Malawian mambalas to Mfuwe. Instead of arresting Henule, the visionless is blinded by crooked individuals’.
They can’t run away from Lusaka to Lusaka anymore, indeed time will come when plunderers shall face justice!

  3. It’s for katumbi , RB , Henry Banda and lungu . Arms deal while people have know Medici in hospitals . Why is the a middle man why the can pay straight from government . that’s PF all bandits so let’s join since we voted for them

  4. @ Ichalo Lifupa. . Zambia can’t afford to buy drones . can’t pay times if Zambia works ever drinking water or electricity for there on people . It’s all deals from RB and lungu . Why is Henry Banda back ? That bandit . Some with Mulenga sata .

    • You must be the dullest blogger on ZR iwe ! Its marine tactics and not fishing ! You want to look for a job for your tubulu uncle ?!

  5. That is why fwe bena Zambia, we will never leave poverty behind pantu twakula nayo. The first thing you are taught when you learn how to count money is how to get kaloba, when you are elected into public office, they teach you how govt kaloba works and how to refinance it so you can spend it on arms while hospitals go without medicines and clinics in rural areas face a critical shortage of staff.
In the words of Nathan Nyirenda, “bushe ni nkanda iyafita nangula mano ayachepa, nachuchutika mwe lesa, ngafweniko”.

    • Yes. Because you are my young brother and we have been stealing together nomba kaili iwe uli chipuba, me and mine we invest our spoils. No honour among thieves my fellow thief.

  6. Can someone pls explain to me about any abductions going on, on lake mweru and luapula river that has attracted the attention of the government so much that it neglects the health sector which is paramount?

    • Governance is not just medical, its a lot of things you neglect one thing and create a whole lot of problems even to the health sector. Its like your body, no single part of it is irrelevant or you risk get sick.

    • Come on iwe, dont you know that its the madate of the Zambia Army to protect the nation external agression ? Iwe wayamba ukulanda pama panadol ! Suntwe

  7. @ Beautiful Moma; Skeleton:
Please separate the issues and don’t confuse them: the formation of a marine unit is fact out in the public domain, verified by purveyors and assented by the “accused”. The “arms deal” you speak of, however, is only hear-say (it does not check off all the right boxes to be called ‘fact’). Your mixing these two VERY DIFFERENT things naturally leads to faulty conclusions; it leads to unnecessary suspicions and, worst of all, mistrust.
There is one good thing about conspiracy theories: sometimes they can keep us from being gullible. But at other times, they can divide us to achieve their own ulterior motives. So be careful how you digest your zwd-sourced stories (yes, I am equating zwd to conspiracy theorists); keep them in a separate compartment from…

    • Thejoy
I can truly understand your point, however its the innuendos of such “hear say” which gives some of us rights to question the leaders about matters which affect the country.
It was the hear says which reported that the late presidents illnesses whilst the entire PF disputed & accused the questioners of fabricating stories. They are deeply dwelled in denials of slumber, but it came to pass.
I have rights to question wrong things if I see it dint of getting validity. When did you start speaking for someone who is alive?
These allegations are serious & that’s why Zambia’s international relations & ratings have drastically deteriorated b’coz plunderer’s are left to continue with their illegal activities.
      Why are the accused MUTE?
      Hospitals have NO Medicine…

  9. The idea of forming a marine unit in Zambia is much older than Sata. If your world started with Sata and ended with Sata then you are lost. Sata was never a military strategist let alone a tactician. All he knew was to laugh at the military with his ‘there is no war’ warped thinking, remember? We in the military are tired of cheep lies. Stop posting half truths you morons, buffoons, quacks and get real. Fusek.

  10. This is not new, I remember even as school cadets our friends from that part of the country used to have a marine unit. That was in the 80s baice naimwe.

  11. The best soldiers in the world second to the seal vi. the Zambian commando, now also the Zambian marine commando, i love you guys and when i become president of Zambia i will make sure that YOU become as strong as you need to be and develop Zambia together with other defense wings. God bless this blessed army.
