UNIP president Tilyenji Kaunda will contest the August 11 general elections without any electoral pact and the party has announced that Njekwa Anamela will be the running mate.

Mr Kaunda announced the party’s decision at a press briefing at Lusaka’s Kenneth Kaunda House yesterday.

“As UNIP, we have resolved to contest the coming August 11 elections at all levels with our party president Tilyenji Kaunda as presidential candidate and further endorse Njekwa Anamela as his running mate,” UNIP Northern Province chairperson Komichili Kafunda said.

Mr Kaunda said UNIP will contest the elections without forming an alliance with another political party.

“UNIP is a party that has gone into alliances with other political parties, but we don’t think that they are necessary all the time. We are not looking forward to forming an alliance with any political party,” he said.

And Mr Kaunda has condemned pockets of political violence ahead of the August elections.

“We in UNIP have observed with great concern the inter-party violence that is taking place. We condemn unreservedly this trend that is contradicting our motto of One Zambia, One Nation,” he said

Meanwhile, Mr Anamela has commended the restoration of former President Rupiah Banda’s immunity by the High Court.

“It’s a good thing when we do not harass former heads of State deliberately. We think that no-one should be prosecuted for political reasons, so the restoration of Rupiah Banda’s immunity is okay,” he said.
Mr Anamela said the lifting of Mr Banda’s immunity was irregular.

  1. ..abanabo ba Tilyenji baleikalafye if he does not have anything better to do with his life…..his party belongs to archives…..why waist time and money on ‘a shoe not your size..’

    • UNIP, whether you want an alliance or not is beyond your means. No party wants to associate itself with a dead and buried party. Mr. Tilyenji Kaunda, please learn to forget and move on!

    • How many MPs and Councillors does UNIP have? Why is Kaunda wasting money for appearing on the ballot paper? Muliokela has a better chance of getting note than zero votes because he at least has some views on how to develop Zambia! Kaunda just seems to wake up at election time and then soon after reverts to his political coma.

On Mr Kaunda, he is a brave man, if most men and women had a mentality like him of loving something so much that they are will endure and still stick to that silent voice that says “you are the one,” most marriages would be standing.

  3. Going nowhere. Him and his running mate are already on different planets. Instead of wasting resources, use them to uplift one Zambian, at least.

  4. UNIP: the domant party, similar to the party of Miyanda! We eagerly await some tidings from the retired general regarding all manner of issues, including, of course, the naming of the running – mate!

  6. Comment: Iwe Tilyenji Kaunda usandiseketse, Let me first take you back your motherland Malawi where United Democratic Front(UDF) had over one hundred Members of Parliament during the regime of Bakili Muluzi first democratic president of Malawi, But now in Malawi parliament there is only 13 members of Parliament for UDF under the Leadership of Atupele Muluzi, son of Malawis former president of Malawi, We told Atupele that UDF its going to an end like UNIP, He didn’t believe, a political Party its not like Ufumu, There is no way UNIP will bounce back to. government, you better support UNDP, Only Malawi Congress Party(MCP) is still popular and enjoys the majority of Ngoni and Chewa people of Central region part of Malawi since the leadership of Kamuzu Banda up to now, Under your…
