Zambia Air Force Commander General Erick Chimese has issued a strong warning that there will be strict restrictions to the use of air space during the election campaign period.
Lieutenant General Chimese revealed that the ZAF in conjunction with the Civil Aviation Authority have resolved to exercise maximum strictness in the management of the airspace this time around.
He advised all players intending to fly around to religiously adhere to laid down procedures.
Some opposition parties such as the UPND have complained over delays by ZAF grant permission for its leaders to bring in their helicopters for campaign season.
General Chimese was speaking Friday morning during the ground breaking ceremony for the Public Private Partnership ZAF complex in Twin Palm area which was officiated by President Edgar Lungu.
“Under the prevailing security conditions in Zambia today, we are duty bound to take stringent measures that would avoid violence,” he said.
General Chimese stated ZAF is closely monitoring the peace threatening behaviour by some politicians during this campaign period.
“We the service chiefs are seriously concerned with the carelessness, lack of patriotism, hooliganism and total indiscipline that has been observed over the past few months from some of our citizens. We have openly seen them inciting violence, especially through the media. These individuals have been justifying their acts of violence and that of their followers as self-defence or retaliation,” he said.
“It is very Unzambian. It is a threat and it cannot be allowed to continue growing in our society. Some of the perpetrators of genocide we hear being arrested and convicted in our sister countries in Africa are being done so due to the statements these individuals made before the genocide. Some of the utterances they made cannot even be compared to what we are seeing in our own Zambian media, both print and electronic,” General Chimese said.
He said violence should not be tolerated at all in Zambia adding that there are numerous examples of the effects of violence in Africa and world over.
And President Lungu reiterated his government’s commitment to infrastructure development in order to propel economic development.
He also cautioned men and women in uniform to remain non-partisan in their work.
The ZAF PPP Twin Palm construction projects is a 1.4-million-dollar project which will be constructed by a Chinese construction firm.

In 2015, airspace was used to the disadvantage of opposition (UPND). We saw what happened in Mongu when HH could not take oof. We also saw what happened in Shiwang’andu though the latter had to do with unruly PF cadres. What is the problem with the airpspace? Is it congested? There is no need to be emotional about General Chimese’s statement. If we are sober, we will understand that what he has said is in fact treason.
