The Zambian Government has decided to withdraw its recognition of the so-called Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR), a partially recognised state that controls an area in the Western Sahara region.
Foreign Minister Harry Kalaba announced that Zambia has since broken off its diplomatic relations with the entity.
During a joint press conference with the Moroccan Minister Delegate to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Nasser Bourita on Saturday in Rabat, Mr Kalaba said “the Government of the Republic of Zambia decided to withdraw its recognition of the self-proclaimed RASD and cut its diplomatic relations with this entity.”
Mr Kalaba went on to say that the Government of the Republic of Zambia expresses its “strong support for the efforts of the United Nations under the auspices of the Security Council and the Secretary General to reach a just, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution to the Sahara conflict, in line with Security Council resolutions.”

Never in the history of Zambia has any President been so ready to resolve this issue that President Edgar Lungu. This issue is already on the cards. Watch him and see his God given wisdom. Post election Zambia will see the winning team of ECL solve the Barotse issue to the satisfaction of all. He is a man of his words and his legacy will SONTA the Barotse issue as one of his achievements.

do you know that the countries which respect itself do not recognize western Sahara as a country because it lacks the constituents of establishing a country, some of these constituents is to have lands (to have sovereignty over lands) those separatist live in Algeria and not in Western Sahara. so to recognize a country it needs to exist fristly in reality through the lands it owns. what if the people decide the integration with Morocco? Morocco is not a member of AU because AU recognizes Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic. Morocco has flooded its citizens into Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic so much that there are more Moroccans than the Sahwawi in their own country.

Big error, this is a wrong policy. The Saharawi s have the right to be independent since they were a Spanish colony and not Moroccan land. Morocco violated the Africans agreed principles of respecting the frontier s inherited from the colonial period.

I am replying to your comment. Kindly note that France an Spain divided Morocco in 2. Sahara was under Spain occupation. Allow me to correct you : Morocco does not claim Mauritania and a part of Algeria (even that in the past, some of their territories were une the Cherifian Empire domination). This so-called “Western Sahara Republic” movement is the result of the European colonialism, and its leaders benefit from the help of the neighbour (Algeria) because of an influence war in the sub-region between the 2 big North Africa Countries.

The Western Sahara Community, who is sovereign south Morocco, is happy with the wise decision of Zambia to let the UN do the job. The UN is the fair body who can deal with the Western Sahara issue opposing Morocco to algeria. Nobody else should decide. Africa Union lost credibility when it admitted the algerian non-sovereign Sahrawi Republic against the article IV of the 1963 AU Charter. East Africa states should follow the example of Zambia to let the UN process move forward. It’s a very complex issue legacy of cold war. algeria is behind the scenes since day 1.
