The National Road Fund Agency (NRFA) has projected monthly revenue of twenty million Kwacha from the four new Toll Plazas at Katuba, Shimabala, Mumbwa and Chongwe.
Road Tolling at Katuba, Shimabala and Mumbwa is expected to commence this month.
NRFA Public Relations Manager Alphonsius Hamachila has disclosed this to ZNBC News.
He says Avic International, the contractor engaged to construct the conventional Toll Plazas at a cost of 9.8 million dollars has installed the canopies, booths and booms at the three sites and the requisite Tolling systems in readiness for commissioning.
Mr. Hamachila said the new Toll Plazas have been installed with Automatic number plate recognition devices, Toll Price electronic displays and enhanced security monitoring features with a picture recording for each transaction for transparency and accountability.
He said Katuba Toll Plaza, which is 30 kilometres from Lusaka, on the Lusaka – Kabwe Road has the highest traffic volume of nine thousand vehicles per day and has projected monthly revenue of over ten million Kwacha.
The NRFA public relations manager also says the Shimabala Toll Plaza, on the Lusaka Kafue Road has a daily traffic volume of five thousand and will have three Toll booths serving the South bound traffic and three others serving the north bound traffic with projected monthly collections of six million kwacha.
Mr. Hamachila said the Mumbwa Toll Plaza, on the Lusaka Mongu Road has a traffic volume of seven hundred per day with a monthly revenue collection of eight hundred and 40 thousand Kwacha.
He said construction works at the Chongwe Toll Plaza will commence once the weather becomes favourable with estimated monthly revenue of two point four million Kwacha.
These are good initiatives but we need maximum accountability and results. We need to see a multiple lane roads each direction on all major inter-provincial roads for efficiency on the roads and reduced road traffic crashes.
Toll roads are for highways and not existing roads. Whats the point of paying road tax then ?
Then, who pays for the construction of the roads? even the roads you travel one wherever you are someone paid for it. Let us be responsible and pay for services. You pay for services in the country where you are but because it is Zambia you want a high way. Let us be realistic and think properly.
Trespho Chitamfya
A toll road is a short cut to point C to the alternative existing road ABC…in other words its the convenient and reliable alternative to congested road in the UK there is M6 Toll.. you don’t just turn ABC into a toll road that’s you pay for that convenience. Its unfair to charge people to pay for an existing road ABC when they already pay for it in Road Tax and other taxes.
Its also irresponsible for these foools to have projections from existing roads …my god I dread the day RTSA will install Speed Cameras they will also have projections and celebrate publicly when the hit a certain figure.
Mongu route operation not economical in medium term
Charges are just too high, now that from ndola to Lusaka on a 300KM stretch there are 3 toll plaza…are you going to reduce or it will be just like that……to be honest doing business in Zambia has become a mess.
They are charging people twice..its like going into a club and being charged to use the toilet and to seat down on the seats inside. Anyway Zambians are docile people!!
*…to sit down..
On a tollway the fee is usually paid once. Say you pay in lusaka on way to ndola then if you have receipt then you should pay no more tolls on the way,
This us just a way toraise revenue.
$9 million on taking more money from people means less money available in the commercial market, less standard of living, higher food costs, higher fuel cost. You are just screwing zambia till their is no more to give
Sorry meant $2million thats from 4 how much from all toll booths,
Seriously we will end up being ZAMBABWE not proud ZAMBIA
If have a factory in Livingstone which makes groceries products. Then delivering to whosalers in chililabombwe. All the payment to expensive electricity, Toll gates, Fuel, the building I’m Renting and Salaries I’ll add to the product at the point of sale. This will also apply to be were I’ll deliver my goods. At the end of day who surfers most is the retailer.
Have you looked at alternatives like RAIL TRANSPORTATION??????
ZRL takes how long?
The target revenue collection figures needed for comprehensive road maintenance and development are missing. These figures must be stated clearly side by side with actual collection figures. That is the only way complete road servicing will be achieved. Yes, the quantification of actual collection figures is also important but the nation needs to see the full cost of road development and maintenance for the entire country. What is the discrepancy? Apart from Toll Plazas, what are the alternative sources of funding to pay for road development in the country? These figures need to be juxtaposed in the spirit of transparency and accountability. Or are we creating a gold mine for gold diggers?
They are definitely misappropriating it to make repayments on debt!!
@nichlands….the retailer then passes onto the consumer.us…even topping up on the actual increase.
Can anyone tell how inflation has dropped when all costs are increasing. Trade deficit up 409% that is IMPORTS over exports. All imports will be paying tolls all the way to destination.
Price increases lead to inflation inflation leads to price increase lead to inflation just ask MUGABE
When the kwacha crashed to k14 to us$1, i use to buy 500g omo for k15, 2L cooking oil for k43. Yesterday i bought the same omo for k10 and cooking oil for k34 on freedom way-to me that seems prices have come down hence inflation reducing. Throw in competition where the big 4 supermarkets are running promos every 2 weeks and voila, everyone even the tuntemba’s are reducing their prices. I really don’t know which part of the country you are buying your basics from??????
Zambian citizen, and mealie meal is …… price reduction there are answered in your first statement.
BOZ support of the kwack is the only thing thst has improved exchange rate but at the same time has stopped economic growth. Hence the continual borrowings which by the way have to be paid back
…and the increase in copper production announced by the mines? the opening of malting plant by ZB? the coming on board of more fish companies like yalelo to compete with lake harvest and farmer’s market? how many butcheries are popping up: legana, star butchery, daily meat?? ALL THIS LEADS TO INCREASED ECONOMIC ACTIVITY AND GROWTH, DON’T YOU THINK?????
Zambian citizen so you are saying that at the end of each month you have more in your pocket. What was water, electricity, how many toll booths, talk time, bread, mealie meal , bus fares ,pies mosi, jameson, castle light, castle,
Potatoes, when the kwacha was 14 to 1.work out
Mealie meal is not the only starch one can eat-potatoes which cost k70 per 7kg last month (imported) were k38 (buya bamba) in shoprite yesterday. Castle lite had hit k12 but is as low as K7.50n in liquor shops and game and shoprite are currently selling a six pack for k36!! COMPETITION!! Bread in spar is k7 and the list is endless…the point Masa, some sectors like transport are run by cartels that control prices, same with the millers. The point is to keep your ear to the ground and bargains are all over the place. More in your pocket, this depends on your input: if you feel a single job can sustain you, you are wrong!! Britons work 4 jobs at a time to sustain themselves, why can’t we do extra???????
Pipo have to have money to participate in economic growth 78% of zambians live in poverty, they are the pipo suffering so therefore that means the majority. Am not political am just wanting zambia to progress. We are not progressing. Read latest LT report on debt in zambia.. Look at the decrease in kwacha fro 14 to 10 roughly 28% reduction in price of the items u mentioned rpughly the same. I am sceptical of zabs figures. Yalelo have been around for 2 or 3 years. If that is good why are we spending $30 million a year on chinese fish. No foreign exchange there straight out of the coffers.
I am not into arguing with you or anyone just want this politcal crap to stop and people focus on the economy a d steps to build it
us$30m on chinese fish??? that’s news, Masa. I think the problem is that the current local production can’t meet the local demand and that presents an opportunity for me and you to go into fish farming! For me i have never eaten chinese fish since i married in 2007 as it has always been kariba and kafue breams. Then of late, more and more Zambians are becoming active in the informal sector and the trades, you should see what a group of 30 somethings young men i met can who are making kitchens-brilliant stuff!! who needs imports?? It is time, Masa-the hard working ones are taking a grip on this economy, really. Have you seen the furniture from Chilulu?? It’s time, only….
This is what i want to see. Zambians being proactive. Too much emphasis on cadres.we have talent we just need opportunity. Youth loans have to be better screened. Youth need direction. Youth should not be considered to be 35 year old men.
Cannot eat chinese fish either. I costed it backwards to china and believe it is technically being “dumped”here But chsnge it and compound pipo cannot afford our local fish catch 22
We have to look more at marketing our local produce on export market and look to niche markets.
Zambian Citizen & Masalamuno congratulations very mature exchange. This how it should be not the insults peddled by some contributors. I have leant something from your exchange
