Opposition UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema has finally been charged with treason by Zambia Police .
Inspector General of Police Kakoma Kanganja told a media briefing that Mr Hichilema has been jointly charged with five other people with treason and three other criminal offences.
“I would like to inform the nation that we have jointly charged and arrested Mr Hichilema and five others with:
1. Treason contrary to section 43 (1) (a)
2. Disobedient to lawful orders contrary to section 127 of the penal code.
3. Disobeying of statutory duty contrary to section 126 of the penal code of the laws of Zambia (rule No. 222 of the High Way Code), and
4. Use of insulting language contrary to section 179 of the penal code.”
Mr Kanganja said those jointly charged with Mr Hichilema are Lastone Mulilandumba, Muleya Haachenda, Walace Chakwa, Pretornous Haloba, and Hamusonde Hamaleka.
He said the police had closely analysed what transpired in Mongu district of western province on Saturday the 8th of April 2017 were the UPND leader Mr Hichilema and other persons in his entourage obstructed the Presidential motorcade.
“It has been established that the opposition leader disobeyed police orders to give way to the Presidential motorcade on Limulunga road in an attempt to put the life of the Republican President in danger,” Mr Kanganja said.
He said the dockets of the case would be taken to the Director of Public Prosecutions for further dealings.
Mr Kanganja stated that the police had been unable to charge Mr Hichilema yesterday because one of his lawyers had requested that the other lawyers be present but they never showed up.
He said the lawyer had then requested that their client be charged today with all their lawyers present.
And 12 other UPND members have also been arrested for obstructing police officers in the due execution of duty which is contrary to section 250 (b) of the penal code.
“I wish to reiterate that the actions by the opposition leader were unreasonable, reckless and criminal. Therefore, members of the public are being warned that as police we are not going to watch such kind of behaviour by any person irrespective of their status or political affiliation. We shall ensure that all those that would want to cause unnecessary anarchy are arrested and prosecuted.” He said.
This fiasco demonstrates the lack of astute political leadership at top level of this nation both in opposition and the governing party. You wonder who advices our leaders in government. The events of the past two days don’t bode well on our economy.

If anything one will know by the end of this exactly what kind of country Zambia is. What kind of leadership and opposition exists and what our courts, lawyers and police force are made of. More importantly what kind of security provision was made, how it was used or abused and the mindset of all involved. This is not about how irritating one person finds the other or who thinks who is the true president. The active president believes he is right and is a lawyer. That is the saddest truth. The facts will not support the charge of treason. Another charge might have stuck but not treason.
THIS CASE IS GOING NOWHERE……Waste of time and money, this is just another road offence.

HH, even after 10 years if being in politics he has remained an under five.
He always miscalculated. He contradicted the international election observers by rubbishing their findings then calling on them to support his desire to go to State House.
First of all he undermines the intellect of the international observers that they joined Lungu in his perceived ‘stealing of vote’, and then goes ahead and calls for their support.
Now it is this miscalculation; he commits a criminal offence in view of the entire nation and even international community by blocking presidential motorcade, which act has been condemned by all well-meaning citizens across the country.
But his plan was that when he is arrested people will rise. But how can you openly commit a crime and think people will speak for you, instead of presenting yoursrlf as law abiding to win the support of the public.

As a PF supporter i really feel bad that President Lungu seems to be so clueless on political strategy. What he has done is ordain HH as the next President of Zambia. During Michael Sata’s time, on the copperbelt cadres forced Rupiah Banda off the road to give way to Sata. If Sata was charged for treason PF would not be in power. The politics Edgar is practicing are small mind emotional politics. Since August elections, 9 months down the line the President and his Minister of Finance have failed to articulate Zambia’s economic programme and the President’s focus will be diverted further on petty things that add no value to youth unemployment. Edgar should come down before he crash lands. His days are getting shorter in State House as each day passes.

What are the grounds for this, to amount to treason?
