Home Affairs Minister, Steven Kampyongo says it’s unfair and unfortunate for Chiefs in Southern province to issue threats to government following the arrest of UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema.

Mr Kampyongo says the traditional leadership in the province ought to know that the UPND Leader is not above the law and that it is up to the courts of law to prove him innocent.

He says the Chiefs should not be seen to be taking sides in politics because their role is to provide guidance and not to be partisan.

Mr Kampyongo says the traditional leadership will be doing the nation a de-service if they continue with this kind of antagonism.

Meanwhile, the Home Affairs Minister has warned that government will not sit idle and allow some people continue to burn markets and other public property.

He has warned the people behind the recent spate of fires that they will face the full wrath of the law once caught.

And New Congress Party President Peter Chanda says traditional leaders should allow the police and courts to operate independently.

Mr. Chanda said it is important for traditional leaders to issue responsible statements that will unite the nation and enhance peace.

He said it is disappointing that some traditional leaders have taken a stance on political matters despite upholding their role of providing wisdom and counsel to the Zambian people.

Mr. Chanda said this is a walk in interview with ZNBC News in Lusaka.

And in a telephone interview, Zambia DNA spokesperson Spuki Mulemwa has condemned the conduct of some chiefs from southern province for making statements that have potential to breach peace.

  1. So they should just keep quiet while one of their most prominent subjects is charged with treason? I think people in PF need brain transplants because their reasoning defies logic.

    • Why aren’t other chiefs also rising up top the occasion. Common, the southern chiefs have shown the way, those from other areas where the son of the soil enjoys considerable support should also condemn these demons in government.

    • This is one of the problems in PF. An advice is not a threat or an ultimatum. But I feel sorry for Zambia as its citizenry over-expects something great to come out from such people like Kampyongo. This is the chap who instead of studying durining his enrolment at UNZA and upgrading his IQ, the miserabale chap was busy selling illegal dollar in Katondo Street. What do you expect: failure to understand basic diction from even the illeterate chiefs.

    • What law did he break? Today they can’t logically or evidently explain the law been charged. The only unfair threat to Zambia are PF and there thuggery behaviour. The man is innocent. The police stole and damaged his property even urinated on his bed and you talk about law. This is wild animal behaviour. Unacceptable in a cilized society.

    • Why is this man threatening chiefs from Southern Province only when the statement was issued by chiefs from Southern, Western, Central and Northwestern Provinces?

    • PF answer to the issues raised in that statement and stop beating about the Bush. Kapiyongo just remain at easy. No everyone is in your tribal boat.

  2. But why killing and brutalising innocent zambians in the name of peaceful country when we are not. The helicopter which had UPND leaders on board in Shiwang’andu was almost blown up to pieces by you and your cadres on two separate occasions during election campaign. Was that not an act of treason? A lot of deaths committed by you and your party on UPND members are still pending at police and yet evidence is there to track down the criminals.

    • That was there problem if they didnt rise. So you go to sh!t in the toilet because someone has been there to sh!t before, or it is out of necessity? Like other PF cadres and leaders, you need a a head transplant

  3. @1 those chiefs are hypocritical @ tribal when this so called their son was busy insulting the president they were mute, but now that he is in hot soup they start ranting even on things they have no knowledge of.

    • And what were the insults Mr. illiterate, tribalists personifier!? Try thinking with you head, even if it has no capacity, it will save your a$$

  4. Hon. Kampyongo you are one to talk about unfairness??!! I’m sure to see a picture of you next to the word ‘Threats’ in a dictionary

    • ….And can NCP president Peter Chanda tell me what he thought of chiefs from Muchinga who publicly barred HH from ever going there?

  5. What did the chiefs say? I find it hard to comment unless one could say what they said. However it is also important to know that before they said that they discussed and agreed according to ther understanding of the situation. If I were a minister I would not discuss this in public media but write to them or their spokes person if I feel they are out of step. Would the minister answer chiefs from his area the way he has done? I stand to be educated on this one.

    • Those tribal chiefs are on record giving govt ultimatums to release hh unconditionally. According to them hh never committed any offence and he was in order to blocking to presidential motorcade.

    • @ 6.1 You have amafi in your brain. What offence did he commit? Your comments are always irritating because they are never logical, but full of insults, and irrelevancies. Did you learn how to advance arguments?

  6. Why have we chosen to behave as if this is the first time someone is being charged with treason? Of course, it’s the first time someone has openly threatened the life of a sitting president – a prima facie treasonable act for sure.

  7. @4.1 Rainmain you must be dull Tonga , so u didn’t even watch the video but busy supporting your fellow Tonga out of ignorance. You think insults is only about calling or mentioning someone’s body part.

  8. son of which soil that we are not? Yes its not fair for chiefs to have made the statement they made. what Hakainde stands for is daring authorities. It was, I think, a strategy, to get arrested as a means to attrack attention. In my opinion he is desperate. UPND is a tribal party. If it wasn’t for my Tonga wife and children I would have suggested jake… I can’t fight against myself.

  9. The country is at a tipping point.

Even Rwanda genocide started after Leader of Hutus was killed by Tutsis.

Emotions are high among HH’s stronghold & the people are not happy with the torture & abuse you’ve subjected HH & co-accused over a case of traffic misdemeanor.

Already the fires are giving you sleepless nights. What more BOMBS? Respect others if you want to be respected.

  10. This an needs to be removed from the Home Affairs port folio. He will lead this country into tribal wars. He has no idea about being a national leader and the sort of language to use to appease people.

    • How I wish the appointing authority can read your post, but am sure Kaiser would make sure he does not.Does the president even know that he leads a nation of literates who are following this fiasco?

  11. It surprises me on how bloggers respond to well written articles. Its just shows how far people can toll party lines without even giving a constructive view point.

He is just make a valid point for all peace and democrats to hind in order to help Africa grow and focus on development of its own people.

Its a shame to see Africa living condition in the world of development and yet we cannot even afford basic living condition and waste our resources on persecuting dissenting view. The reason being wasted on Policing Zambia could have been well spent on rural development programme like provision of clean drinking water.

I would edge people who are like to be afforded internet to help hold Africa to account and stop waiting for other from other continents to develop Africa.

  13. referendum be given to noth western rodesia. The they chose to break away let it be so. That is what a civilized society does. Southern province can not fail to stand alone. The people are hard workers. They have been feeding you for a long time. All beggars on the streets come from N and L. Take a survey if you like.

    • Dear Mwits
Who told you that my mother from Lundazi is feed by my grand mother from Monze. I have a grand mother from my father side in monze and another one in Lundazi. Each one is hard working. Do not think its Togas only who are feeding Zambia. That is not correct

  14. The only people that are likely to bring trouble in Zambia are those who support blindly. I mean the disgruntled ones. Unless some one has not watched the video. Every one who watched that video will agree indeed that the giant was really wrong. What the wise chiefs from south should have done was to ask for forginess on his behalf rather than uttering worlds of threat. Threatening someone is also a crime. Let it be dawn that they learn the law before they are arrested for threats.

  15. The good thing about days or time are that,” they change” you can’t cry all the time and you can’t laugh all the time .

  16. Kapyongo wait and c how this case will make the whole police (IG) and government look foolish when it end.

  17. This chap thinks his smart now. Wait until your ilegal Lungu leave office. You will spend the rest of your youth days in jail or explaining your past behaviour in court. Don’t be used and look out for yourslef especially when you are among thugs and criminals which is now 99% of PF members.

  18. Really how silly and stupid can someone be? Since when did the courts start proving any one innocent. Everyone is innocent before the law. Fact that one is said to be suspect does not make one guilty. That is 101 in law fundamentals and if the so called Hon Minister of Home affairs can not get that, then what sort of a government is in place to which even basics is quantum mechanics. The chiefs in Southern province or other have a basic right to bring sanity to the madness currently ongoing when they see an illegality committed against any citizen regardless. Fact that Kampyongo is Minister does not give him jurisdiction to take away that right from the chiefs. Chiefs have your say you are entitled. Every Zambian who feels justice is being threatened has the same right to say so…

  19. So this monkey called Kapyongo thinks it is fair to lap HH with treason case and it is fair for Northern chiefs to take a stand in support of the evils of PF? PF MPs and their cadres have no brains. Why is PF giving instruction to the Police? The Chiefs warning is same warning America or anyone can give to PF.

  20. A few months ago, chiefs from muchinga province were paraded at Tazama guest house in Mpika or chinsali and they were busy issuing partisan statements against UPND (due to brown envelopes they were given) and Kapolyo AKa Kampyongo ,who was in attendance, did not see anything wrong with this. Chiefs from Southern. Western. north western and central were only demanding for the release of HH and there is nothing unfair with such a request. Good to hear that president Lungu has directed his ministers to refrain from commenting on matters involving HH and I hope the same will apply to he’s other loose cannons in the likes of Frank bwalya. Mumbi Phiri etal

  21. How did HH ask for this cruel treatment on him from the illegal president and his thugs who was inaugurated by an office orderly not Chief Justice or Deputy?

  22. Why shouldn’t the chiefs say what they feel? Did you not see what that Kaponya Bowman from Cb and the Cow spokes woman Phiri comment? Its not a case of The state Vs HH but its PF vs HH.

  23. Chula asumine umuntu bulakabwapelele.

The amazing thing for me we are failing to see why the southern Chiefs are reacting this way.

  24. Chiefs have a duty to protect their subjects who to them are children and a child remains a child whether she’s a prostitute , thief or disabled…you politicians similarly are there to protect the citizens whether UNIP, UPP, EEP etc, they remain Zambians in the republic government of Zambia, and you PF please napapata, stop calling the Zambian government ‘PF Government’..it is not your government! It is every Zambian’s government..ati ‘Edgar Lungu’s government’..iesh!!
