Kitwe United fans put to rest

The three Kitwe United supporters who died in road accident on Saturday have been put to rest today at Chingola Road Cemetery in Kitwe.

Boniface Lungu, 26, Able Mwamba, 33, and Arthur Sakala, 45, all of Kitwe’s Kamitondo Township died on their way to Chingola for a FAZ Division 1 Zone 2 match against Chingola Police.

A sombre mood punctuated by wailing characterised the funeral ceremony held at Garden Park Stadium the home of United.

Kitwe Mayor Christopher Kang’ombe led hundreds of mourners in paying their last respects to the trio.

Mourners had filled Garden Park as early as 09h00 before proceeding to the cemetery after 13h00.

Players from Kitwe United, Mining Rangers and Geokas clad in club attire were visible at the funeral.

Retired footballers among them former Kitwe striker Douglas Chiwaya, George Simbeye and Fred Siame were also present.

“This is a situation where you have no words. It is a sad time,” Kitwe United chairman Gabriel Akayombokwa said on the sidelines of the funeral.
