SACCORD says the outcome of the ICC consultation process is an opportunity for the country to influence other African countries in championing reforms at the international court.
Speaking when made a presentation at the public forum on the ICC results held at Protea Hotels in Lusaka Humphrey Elekani who is SACCORD Board Member said the results gives the Zambian government mandate to help other African countries that may have problems with the ICC in fighting for reforms.
Mr Elekani explained that it was important that the country position ita self as important stakeholder in helping to fight for reforms at the international level.
He said the Zambian government should creat platforms where it share with other countries that have continued to agitate ové the withdrawal from ICC.
Mr Elekani also said it was important for government and parliament respects the wishes of its citizens who resoundingly approved the continued stay of the country in the ICC.
Further, Mr Elekani said the country should join hands with other African countries who have explicitly said they want to be part of the ICC.
He said the country can mobilize the continent and prepare a position paper containing grievances of African countries and practical measures for submission at the ICC so as to ensure that the said court is percieved to be a fair body.
“Mr Elekani also said it was important for government and parliament respects the wishes of its citizens who resoundingly approved the continued stay of the country in the ICC.”
THE ABOVE SENTENCE IS IRRELEVANT BECAUSE IT WAS THE GOVERNMENT THAT LET THE GENERAL PUBLIC TO DECIDE WHETHER TO REMAIN IN ICC OR EXIT ICC. THE GOVERNMENT MUST BE COMMENDED FOR IT’S DEMOCRATIC APPROACH- ENTRUSTING ZAMBIA WITH THE DECISION OF REMAIN OR EXIT. IT WERE YOU WHO WERE CRYING FOUL THAT THE GOVERNMENT DOES NOT WISH TO REMAIN IN ICC. JUST BE BRAVE AND THANK ECL FOR HAVING BEEN SO DEMOCRATIC.
@Peter, I agree with your observation..
Spot on, Peter!!!
ICC IS CONCERNED WITH THE ABDUCTION OF THE RULE OF LAW TO THE LAW BREAKERS LIKE THE WAY PF IS DOING. THEY THOUGHT THEY CAN MANIPULATE THE NATIONALS. THE PRESIDENTIAL SEAT IS FOR ONE INDIVIDUAL AND IF YOU MISTREAT CITIZENS THEN YOU MUST ALONE BE PREPARED TO HANDLE YOUR MESSES.
I do not like democracy, I also hurt to see African countries to always associate itself with western world’s justice systems. We must grow up!
To do what is right before GOD and man is the correct way of governance.
This was a a government initiative and they should be commended for choosing to let US the people decide. Job well done ECL and his government!! SACCORD now want to please their paymasters as if they were in the forefront of it. PATHETIC CIVIC ORGANISATIONS!!!
I don’t agree with PF, but on the issue of ICC withdrawal, the politicians are cllever people. What you should know is the people verses politicians. The politicians read the mood of the people and curved. Lungu knows PF has bumpy ride. On this one they say there are democratic to bring this issue to the public and they accepted the outcome.
The way things are at the moment, no any political party has a solution. PF and UPND have same characteristics. There are violent and arrogant.
We want someone who can explain to the masses how there are going to turn around things when they form government .
(1): Firstly, I would like to convey my deepest condolence to the peoples of Britain on the killings of innocent Britons in London. Many Zambians who are connected to UK through their days of education in UK and English football that entertains our lads are saddened by cruel activities of terrorists.
Secondly, President Lungu’s government allowed democracy to prevail by letting the Zambian people decide if Zambia can remain or quit from the International Criminal Court – and people have expressed their democratic right to sustain our membership to the ICC. Yet UK, USA and European Union States have tacitly been supporting crooks (Mmusi Maimane, Irvin Jim, Weston Zambara) to attack Lungu’s Govt on pretext that he is a dictator. God forbid.
(2): No civilised state on this Planet cherishes the proliferation of terrorism to instil universal fears to humanity in this world. But why has the UK, USA and EU states, at various stages, seen it fit to support groups such as UNITA in Angola, RENAMO in Mozambique, and lately approvingly support the DA and NUMSA of South Africa, UPND in Zambia to engage in subversive activities in southern Africa? Some SADC states tend to be under siege by the west. But we know that South Africa is ANC’s a biblical baby; Angola is MPLA’s biblical baby; Namibia is SWAPO’s baby, Mozambique is FRELIMO’s baby and Zambia is the currently PF’s biblical baby.
(3) Elements of terrorism must be examined at broader global scale. A tinge of violence evolving in UPND is like a single cell that eventually develops into a lethal cancerous tumour.
The US trained Bin Laden to fight Russia during the “cold war” era, only to realise too late that they created a monster that executed the Sept-11th attack in New York. Currently, no part of Europe has been spared. The TACIT support for subversive elements in Zambia will boomerang in the near future. Out of desperation, UPND’s version of Mau Mau is capable of networking with known global terrorists. Hence the USA, UK and EU States must advise their Embassies in Southern Africa to discharge their duties responsibly.
That is a very good observation about the mau mau of upnd, the tonga extremists. We need to be very alert with these unholy groupings.
