Zamtel has been awarded a contract for the Supply, Delivery, Distribution and Maintenance of an Optic Fibre Cable Network (OFCN) to the Lusaka South Multi- Facility Economic Zone.

The contract signed on Tuesday will see Zamtel provide voice, internet, data and value added services to all business houses in the Lusaka Multi-facility Economic Zone.

The project has been phased with the first phase involving the development of communication infrastructure for the Main Office building, NRB Pharma Zambia Ltd and SAB-Miller.

The second phase will address the rest of the planned areas in the economic zone.

The contract is worth K1.7m and the installation works have since commenced with a six-month completion period.

Zamtel Chief Executive Officer Sydney Mupeta said, “the signing of this contract again reaffirms the confidence that market players have in Zamtel to deliver cost effective telecommunications solutions. We are happy to partner with Lusaka South Multi- Facility Economic Zone to change the economic and industrial landscape of Lusaka in particular and Zambia in general.”

Lusaka South MFEZ Acting Managing Director Mukela Lubasi said, “the contract signing for optic fiber cable supply and installation works marks a great milestone in the operationalization of the MFEZ. The kind of investment we are attracting here requires modern and reliable communication infrastructure and we are confident that in Zamtel we have found a partner capable of providing that quality of service.”

Owned by the Government through the Industrial Development Corporation, the Lusaka South MFEZ was designed to encourage specialised industrial developments aimed at diversifying the economy and attracting new foreign and domestic direct investment.

To date, the Lusaka South MFEZ has attracted investment pledges worth more than US$1.5 billion, resulting in the actualisation of US$450. million.
