Zambia Air Force announces plans to establish a dedicated air ambulance

Zambia Air Force (ZAF) has announced plans to establish a dedicated air ambulance to be stationed specifically to respond to emergencies across the country in the first quarter of 2019.

ZAF Commander David Muma observes that air ambulance is critical and in line with governments quest to enhance service delivery in the health sector which includes reducing time of responding to emergencies such as accidents.

Lieutenant General Muma explained that many deaths that have occurred on high ways due to accidents could be avoided if there is an efficient response system that can reach all parts of the country without spending so much time.

Speaking in Lusaka today, when he received an ambulance donated by the Ministry of Health, Lt Gen Muma noted that to this effect, ZAF has made headways to ensure that appropriate infrastructure is put in place for the air ambulance to start operations as soon as possible.

He also noted that ZAF is committed to partner with government in improving the delivery of health care services to all the people within its catchment area.

The ZAF Commander stressed that this is why there is need for government and ZAF to heighten their collaboration in the area of flying Doctor by creating
more mobile specialised clinics especially in far flung areas that need such services.

Lt Gen Muma further appealed to government to help address the shortages of drugs in some of its outline hospitals which also services surrounding communities.

And Minister of Health Chitalu Chilufya reaffirmed governments’ commitment to attain universal health care services coverage for all Zambians.

Dr. Chilufya explained that government values the support that it gets from ZAF in the provision of health care services adding that, improving access to quality health care calls for concerted efforts from all stakeholders.

He also supported plans by ZAF to establish an air ambulance noting that, air transport is effective in emergency response that is key in saving lives.

The Minister regretted that the country has continued to lose lives in a manner that can be avoided adding that, it is also why government is considering establishing ambulance services that will respond to home emergencies within townships.

Dr. Chilufya also promised to improve the supply of drugs and medical personal in ZAF run hospitals.

  1. But you shouldn’t be waiting for bakateka to tell to airlift someone, ndaba muli na tendency of waiting for orders from plot even when something is an emergency.

  2. Good job ZAF. But let the purchase of the same be above board not inflated tenders again and let the same be used for all zambians regardless of status or political affiliation not only for government officials and members of the ruling party.

  4. The whole Zambia one air ambulance ,I think this plan need to be revisited .per district or province it was going to make sense.how are you going to operate with that air ambulance and purchase of that ambulance you have not mentioned in.we need to know the price.
