Minister of Gender Elizabeth Phiri has expressed gratitude that people in the country are reporting perpetrators of Gender Based Violence (GBV).
The Minister notes that GBV cases in Zambia are on the increase and that people have started knowing the importance of reporting such ill vices.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with ZANIS, Ms. Phiri credited the increased number of reports on GBV cases last year as due to the good response of the public and sensitization.
She explained that in the previous years, GBV reports were lower as people did not know about the importance of reporting them to relevant authorities.
The Minister said the fight against GBV is the responsibility of everybody and it should not only be left to government alone.
“What makes me happy is that even the traditional leaders in the villages have come to support the fight against GBV,” the Minister said.
Ms. Phiri has however, disclosed that her ministry is working round the clock with other stakeholders to sensitize the public about the importance of reporting GBV cases.
She has further applauded the courts for metering sentences and punishing the perpetrators of GBV.
Ms. Phiri, who is also Kanyama Member of Parliament, further advised the media to help in sensitizing members of the public by highlighting and exposing people involved in GBV if the fight against the scourge is to be won.
