Nkana retain Charity Shield in front of ‘Zoom’s’ Widow

Share

The widow of Zambia legend Samuel “Zoom” Ndhlovu was in the stands as Nkana won the 2019 Charity Shield after edging Zesco United in the final played at Arthur Davies Stadium in Kitwe on Saturday.

The Charity Shield was renamed the Samuel ‘Zoom’ Ndhlovu Memorial Charity Shield in his honour after the legendary ex-Zambia coach and forward died 2001.

Esther Ndhlovu aged 78 was present when Nkana rallied to beat Zesco United 5-4 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in 90 minutes.

Striker Maybin Kalengo had given Zesco a third minute lead before Ronald Kampamba equalised at the restart to ensure the final was settled on penalties.

Late substitute Ben Bahn scored the winning penalty for Nkana after Misheck Chaila’s spot kick was stopped by keeper Kelvin Malunga.

Nkana converted their other penalties through Kelvin Mubanga, Shadrick Musonda, Musa Mohammed and Harrison Chisala.

Mwila Phiri, Kondwani Mtonga, Clement Mwape and keeper Dieudonne Ntibahezwa converted for Zesco.

This was a repeat of last year’s Charity Shield final in which Nkana overcame Zesco 4-3 in the final in Lusaka.

Meanwhile, Nkana and Zesco meet in their opening CAF Confederation Cup Group C match on February 3 in Ndola.

  1. I said it and I will say it again and again.Nkana now knows how to beat Zesco.Come Sunday next week, we will humble them at their home ground.Aba red ebabako.

  2. Same teams since 2017?
Rename it Samuel Zoom Ndhlovu Memorial “Zesco-Nkana” Charity Shield.

The rest of the teams in the premier league are hopeless at best.
