On the BBC series Professor Charles Malata is seen performing a complex surgery alongside cardiothoracic surgeons.

In episode 2 of the BBC series at Royal Papworth Hospital, senior consultant thoracic surgeon Aman Coonar calls on the skills of Addenbrooke’s plastic surgeon Charles Malata to undertake a chest wall reconstruction – a complex procedure that is scheduled to last at least 12 hours. Their patient is a former builder, 59-year-old Kevin, who has been suffering for 15 years since having a cancerous lung removed. The cancer was cured, but the cavity left in his chest has never healed, and Kevin has had to live with an open hole in his back.
The procedure took a total of 18 hours to finish and ended at 4am.

In the surgery Charles Malata and Aman Coonar worked together to take a flap of muscle and skin from Kevin’s back and use it to fill the cavity and plug the hole in his chest.

The entire operation was captured by cameras for a BBC series, Surgeons: At the Edge of Life, which began airing on BBC 2 on Tuesday 13th October 2020.

  1. Congratulations to him. Zambia has produced several medical doctors that have exceled yet they are not appreciated. There are some who have been frustrated by the system. Others have found it lucrative to be signing cheques and tenders because that’s the side of bread which buttered. I’ll mention a few just to appreciate them and for them to know that there are those who still hold them highly. Peter Mwaba (former PS), Simon Miti (Secretary to Cabinet), Lackson Kasonka, Professor Kasonde Bowa, Tackson Lumbert, Professor Lupando Munkonge, Manase Phiri (late), Laston Chikoya, Patrick Chikusu (late) etc. If I have left you out it isn’t deliberate or intentional but just know that we appreciate you

  3. This shows how shallow bafika.la like kaizer zulu & Lusambo thinking or lack of thinking leads to. Us zambians have brains but we are lead by blind, corrupt & loud mouthed fools like them. Instead of naturing talent, their inferior brains insult them instead. Zambians insult educated brains that have gone to acquire great experinces out in the diaspora. But they glorify a footballer who goes to play soccer in the diaspora & brings nothing to the country except flushing cars & they go broke in a short while. Dull politicians like kaizer & lusambo are listened to because of buying people chibuku. And great brains are lost to the country.

  4. There is a “nation” of professionals out there despite that they keep getting brushed by a very bad stroke by guys like Kaizar. If you cared to pause the injustices and internal squelching of the populations you can get a lot of expertise to accelerate the country forward. If you couple it with the fantastic professional within the country we can do wonders. Nomba awe shuwa. Ni ma Bill 10 cabe na ma beatings ku koti and closing gates over publicly available court hearings. How can we progress mwa wantu!?

  5. We proud of you Professor. I know you would have preferred to be home but the rotten system forced you to leave. I know young specialists who are being frustrated by our Gvt.Ridgeway got some of the best brains and trained them well for first degree. They went abroad to specialize but our country never gave them recognition they needed and they left. At moment Minister of health is sending specialists in places where their skills can be utilized. We are really cursed as Zambians.

  6. These are the real Doctors. And they do their work quietly.

Noti ati Dr. Kambwili, or Dr. Lusambo, or Dr. Lungu.

    These fake doctors just bark.

  7. Zambia gave him his foundation and he is doing us proud. These are the diasporans I have no issues with. It is the upnd evil diasporans who complain here all day and criticize their birth country who are a disappointment, and yet they are doing menial jobs there like toilet cleaning. Here you have a patriotic doctor doing good to the world without hating on the country that gave him the foundation to do what he is doing. Please emulate him you fi upnd diasporans

  8. I’m proud of him. I would however advise that he stays in the UK where he’s able to get tools to work with. He could always come to Zambia as an external examiner.

  9. Kaizar Zulu in your face. Never a day passes without mentioning diaspora on this forum. Actually you are the only one who is possessed with this diaspora. This is just a case of sour grapes – feeling of disparagement about something you cannot obtain or achieve.

  10. These are the guys who got ma six points when we were in secondary school in the 80s. He came from Mpalapata area in Lubushi area though he went to St. Francis (Malole) for his secondary school. He was the talk of the time in Northern Province. When someone had six points in Cambridge Exams then, you knew he had grey matter. I am not surprised he has gone this far. Congrats Prof.

  11. Zambians set low standards for themselves and when this is an accepted normal in spite of this being a discouragement to aiming high! Thus the fact with us that Zambians who excel would rather migrate into the diaspora to find niches comfortable with the acquired professional skills! Patriotism is in their blood stream but a leadership that does not appreciate professionals is not attractive to draw them back home! The best skilled Zambians needed for national development will continue to skip the country for a long while until the house (Zambia) is restructured to order! Citizens will continue to marvel at what daughters and sons of Zambia are contributing elsewhere! Rid Zambia of mediocre preferences for low qualifications as basic Grade 12 certificate for leadership and hiding in the…

  12. He has done us proud! Great thing he is abroad, in Zambia, he would have been retired “in the national interest” with a name like that. Our current crop of leaders also can not stand true intellectuals…they favor thugs and yes men like kaizer here. Grossly incompetent.

  13. Imagine if we had Plastic Surgeon, Professor Charles Malata perform surgeries in Zambia through Tourism Product Diversification. Combining a packaged tour (hotel, safari, food, pick-up at the airport and transfer). This would create jobs and boost the GDP and economy. Ministry of Tourism and Arts we have a minister managing tourism who has no clue as to where to even begin. We are paying someone to destroy this sector. We need educated people with skills, training and experience for them to put Zambia on the global platform. We need fresh new innovation and real talent for tourism to work. American’s are going to Nigeria to get plastic surgery. T.I the rappers wife changed her eye colour to blue in Nigeria and not the USA.

  14. Well done Prof. Malata, you have done us proud and may God continue to bless and guide you in your work. A humble request, when you can and are able to, please build the capacity back home. Mwabomneni Tata??
