President Lungu demands for Permanent Solution to Floods in Lusaka

Share

President Lungu has instructed the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) and other stakeholders to find a lasting solution to the flood situation in Lusaka province.

President Lungu said that government will provide resources to ensure people in places like Kanyama are assisted to deal with flooding, adding that the flooding problem is historical but must be dealt with once and for all.

President Lungu said this when he inspected the drainage system in Kanyama constituency, and whilst inspecting the drainage, the head of state occasionally stopped to engage the residents.

DMMU National Coordinator Chanda Kabwe said part of the cause of flooding in Kanyama is because engineers did not plan for a drainage system when constructing new roads in the area.

Mr. Kabwe said that the said the Ministry of Finance has however provided resources to deal with the flood problem in Kanyama and that DMMU and other stakeholders are working on a lasting solution to the flood situation in Kanyama and other parts of Lusaka.

And President Lungu has urged Members of Parliament to be innovative. President Lungu said the construction of a modern police station by Kanyama Member of Parliament Elizabeth Phiri is commendable.

President Lungu said that instead of complaining, Ms. phiri has managed to mobilise resources from stakeholders to build a police station. The President said government will not hesitate to pump in resources in community projects started by members of parliament.

President Lungu said this after inspecting works on the construction of Kanyama modern police station.

And Ms. Phiri said Members of Parliament should not just rely on the government to implement projects in their constituencies.

  1. ECL is busy putting up humps and unnecessary bridges in Lusaka. Now he remembers that Lusaka has slums with poor drainage.

  2. This problem has been in places like Kanyama Zambia for a long time. Wrong priorities. Poor planning. No wealth is being created. So we have to borrow or shift the money from somewhere.

  4. Did president Lungu only notice this problem after 7 years in power? This is evidence of ineptitude on the part of the president and his PF government. The president is delusional……………..

  6. It’s what happens when you build on flood plains! So, rather than moan when nature takes its course, carefully consider where you build!

  7. If we had a well functioning local authority, LCC, the President would not be moving from one komponi to another. Its really unfortunate the other day the Kateka was in Mandevu and don’t know the next destination. One wonder what has happened to the drainage lines put up with USAID through Millenium Challenge Account, Just yesterday’s morning down pour Lusaka City major roads from boma offices up to CBD got flooded as though nothing was done. Further what is LCC doing about street light poles being knocked down by motorists, meaning there is no contigency mechanism to have them replaced at the earliest most possible time.

  8. There are only two solutions to stop flooding in Kanyama.
    1. Create a dam and dewater the aquifer to about 1.5 or 2m. Thereby lowering the water table. Kanyama area being in a dambo.
    2. Remove and resettlement the people in flood prone areas.

  10. Maybe, just maybe that same guy wadding in that stagnant water was among the guys that went to ululate at the commissioning of the flyover bridge, instead of crying for proper drainage systems for his area, when it pours those with vehicles will quickly disappear to their airconditioned bungalows, he will be spending the entire night scooping water from his humble home. PRIORITIES.

  11. In coming President elect Lungu demands for permanent solution to Lusaka floods. The President elect is repeating what his former colleague Dr Guy Scott said in 2010 while in opposition. Scott mocked the MMD government for failing to deal with Lusaka floods. Now that we have a new President who will be starting work in January 2021, we can expect the problem to be sorted.

  12. Lungu has lived in Lusaka all his life.

Now 65 years after his birth, he has realised Lusaka gets flooded.

    Amazing stuff!

  13. Just stop stealing. Most problems like that are a result of perennial aid that is applied as bandaid and resubmitted again the following season. Timuziwani bane. Ba kateeka is just wasting time.

  14. This is the last rainy season in your term thats when you have suddenly decided to visit all areas of lusaka to solve their problems. Too little too late.

  15. These issues frequently crop up, because, there seems to be a lacking in the mindset, to ‘get up and do’. Some departments entrusted with the responsibility of delivering public services are there in name only – with individuals yawning away at their desks whilst jobs go unattended. It appears that, the President has to literally spell it out before people scramble to work. This is not good, its similar to spoon feeding a child; and there are no toddlers in government! The President cannot micro manage every department. People have to learn to deliver services of their own initiative – not always waiting for prompting by the President

  16. KZ, even to think of a proper drainage system you need donor funding? How do you people live in your houses?, overgrown grass around your houses, you need donor funding, to provide food for your families, you need donor funding. Shame on you to talk of perennial drainage problems in Lusaka as news. Ati barabishi. Tuleiteka.

  17. Muna last time I checked, the word stakeholders was not synonymous to donor aiders. I am not sure which schools you attended or if you have ever stepped a foot in a classroom. However, I recommend you do research into these two words and then come back to me. Hopefully with an apology for being so slow.

  18. Government, engineers and stakeholders, all missing in action. My compound needs roads and street lights. The only light we get is from bars and tarvens, no wonder we flock to them at night and drink.

  19. The underlying geology of Lusaka is predominantly limestone rock which means the natural drainage is limited and this explains why there are so many water collecting areas such as Garden Compound, parts of Makeni and Lusaka West, Chawama, Marshlands and Chilanga. It also explins why when you sink a well in Lusaka it will normally last throughout the year because the water table is not as far below the surface as in other areas such as Chisamba or in Kabwe.

The only solution to controlling the annual problem is better and more effective drainage systems next to the roads.

  20. The Zambian mindset, the head of state is responsible for everything including the cleaning of toilets and picking up of the trash. Everyone throws trash anyhow without shame and then blame it on a poor head of state who must ensure the cities are clean. Meanwhile there full flagged fully paid mayors and councilors what a defient thinking. Even the opposition blames only one person, they cannot even suggest anything sensible so I have no idea what the opposition is able to do.

  21. This is a political choice. Taking on Eurobond debt instead of taxing the mines, so GOVERNMENT can PLAN and not depend on ‘market based solutions’ (pie in the sky, magical thinking), then this could easily be solved. That makes this not just a PF thing, it is something that ALL the neoliberal parties are responsible for – PF, UPND, MMD, – all of them who support international finance before their own people.
