Police in Lusaka have arrested Economic and Equity Party President, Chilufya Tayali for the offence of Defamation of the President.
This is in line with a video which went viral on social media in which the accused person made derogatory remarks against His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Zambia, Dr Edgar Lungu.
He is detained in police custody for the subject offence.

Well, anybody endowed with a modicum of common sense can make such an inference. Kalimanshi should’ve been the first to be arrested because he’s always claimed that whatever he does is in the name of the President whom he refers to as “Boss”. Even when he embarrassed the nation by starting a fight at the Freedom Statue as the President was laying his wreath, he made similar claims and was never arrested. Between the 2 Kalimanshi is more guilty. But then how do you explain his sudden wealth? From Chawama he’s now in Roma, a high cost low density area! He boasts of a fleet of expensive vehicles. The Police fear him. Chimbwi pakulila ninshi kuli uko ashintilile amatako. From where did he get the courage to even belittle the Minister of Home Affairs?

If ECL feels offended he needs to approach the court to challenge his defamation claim just like HH took Nawakwi to court. You cannot just be arresting everyone making claims against the president like he is a King in a Kingdom. Zambia is a constitutional democracy. The president is not above criticism

I listened to the Video. This was unprecedented attack on ECL by Motor mouth Tayali. Tayali was courageous to say it as it is. The allegation that ECL is promoting, protecting and financing Kalimanshi to inflict violence inside and outside PF didn’t go very well with ECL. The truth hurts especially if it’s being said by a PF surrogate like Chilufya Tayali. ECL now has a tough time to defend that he is not an instigator of violence within and outside PF. Tayali asked some valid questions which needs answers from ECL. These questions must be answered first b4 ECL pushes for Dialogue among Political Parties.
Anyone else I would sympathise not this boy who spends his time online laughing at other people and blackmailing people…you have to be very careful with Tayali it maybe a trick. He is lucky he is not married to a Zambian woman this silly boy…I hope he is accomodated till next week.

No aspiring Presidential candidate has ever said anything about this law of defamation of the President which was copied from defamation of the monarch (Lèse-majesté). The problem in Africa is that we got rid of colonialists only to have some of our own people step into the same oppressive shoes. The difference now is that we are abused by the people of the same colour. In essence, every criticism of the head of state defames him.
This Kaunda era law needs repealing; how else could an opposition party leader perform his job?
Two quick comments: I pity Tayali because he has a brain of a bird.
However, he is not right about President Edgar Chagwa Lungu. My personal take is that Lungu is simply clueless, and ignorant of the role of presidency. If he failed to manage a law firm, and in fact stole his client’s money as publicly reprimanded and disciplined by Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) in 2010, how do Zambians expect Lungu to manage criminal gangs?Let us be honest and analytical.
The president should listen to criticism. There was nothing wrong with what Tayali said. He was merely stating the obvious. As the head of state, the buck stops with him. These arrests will just lead to foreign interference with our elections. CK is on record defaming the president and the entire PF party and yet he is roaming the streets freely and possibly will end up with a lucrative deal in the party. This selective arrests will undo the good work the president is hoping to archive and put a dent on his legacy. Ka Tayali is a big mouth but not a threat to anyone. He said what he said out of love for the president. We expect standards and ka Chilu was defending high standards. I hope the president will intervene to release this young man.
With Tayali a PF surrogate, I wouldn’t be surprised if this was just stage managed so that when real opposition leaders are arrested, it would give a semblance of equal application of the law.

It’s just a gimmick to make it look as if the law is applied equally. He will be out in no time after apologizing to the humble one. After all they need this court jester outside for entertainment.
Meanwhile our president has been labelled a corrupt and a drug courier using the presidential jet and nothing has been done to prosecute Kambwili for embarrassing the head of state. As much as I dislike the statements that Tayali makes, this is nothing to get him into such trouble. The statement is justified and anybody can interpret the happenings similarly. The police are quite quick to apprehend this guy while slow with others. Tayali just apologise and defect to PF, you will be forgiven and welcomed.

We may not like Tayali but he has a Right to express himself. He has heavily criticized ECL on Law and Order issues and the incidents of violence which happened recently and how ECL conducted himself in response to the incidents. Tayali raised a number of questions which ECL hasn’t responded to yet. In Summary who is promoting, protecting and financing Kalimanshi Militia Group if ECL isn’t doing it? Instead of condemning and disciplining PF Cadres why did ECL rush to blame IG Kanganja for Security lapses within PF? Why is ECL seemingly favouring Kalimanshi Group against other Groups? ECL didn’t say a word on the allegations that PF Cadres burnt UPND Regalia in public view? Does PF ever get Police Permits for their Meetings and Rallies? Until ECL disbands Militias and Vigilante…

I don’t like this chap Tayali who has no stand or principle on anything, but the use of this archaic law, more so in recent times, just confirms the abuse of laws and the Police at every opportunity to shut up any critical voices. The more a regime has to hide about it’s crimes, the more it uses repressive measures to survive.
