Independent Lumezi Member of Parliament Munir Zulu has said that it is irregular that Public Accounts Committee Chairman (PAC) Mazuba Mwambazi has facilitated the appointment of his wife Mazuba on the REA Board.
Mr. Zulu said that the Chairmanship of PAC is a critical oversight role in public expenditure and having a spouse closely linked to government is irregular.
He wondered if state security wings are involved in vetting some of the appointments being made under the new Dawn administration.
“These appointments are worrying. We now have wives of Independent MPs being appointed to very sensitive government positions. We are creating fertile ground for corruption,” Mr. Zulu said.
Mr. Zulu was reacting after Independent BwanaMkubwa Member of Parliament and Public Accounts Committee Chairman Warren Mwambazi’s wife Mazuba was appointed to sit on the REA Board.
Meanwhile, Commerce Minister Chipoka Mulenga’s wife Likonge Makai Mulenga has been appointed Board Chairperson of the Rural Electrification Authority (REA).
Energy Minister Peter Kapala last week announced the appointment of new Board of Directors for REA to be led by Mrs. Likonge Makai, wife to Commerce Minister Chipoka Mulenga.
Mrs. Likonge Makai Mulenga, an Electrical Engineer at KCM allegedly campaigned heavily for her husband when he ran on the UPND ticket as Member of Parliament for Chingola.
The rich will always be rich and the poor will always be poor
The appointees are eligible like any other Zambian. Competent and qualified. Their husbands appointments must not in any way hinder their private and independent appointments
This govt will be most useless in the history of Zambia. The govt is full of bitterness and tribalism.Wait and see, kambwili was very right. Why should one province have 70% people in govt?
This govt is disaster
This govt tefitu
tefitu with this boma
this government is no better than PF, they are highly corrupt
#1 We shouldn’t allow this.
The rich don’t care about fuel increase
WHY SHOULD THE PRESIDENT OF THE COUNTRY BE FROM ONE TRIBE?
Sean Tembo plus Munir Zulu equals sleepless nights for Bally. Some of these appointments will backfire on these chaps the moment they’ll begin to share police cells with members of their families
I supported HH but some of his appointments do not show consistency.
Is this not the same HH who says his not president for a few cliques?
Is it not the same HH who says his been receiving pressure from cadres to be appointed into government positions.
But does this reflect on HH’s character.
Useless government?????????
Question them if they are not qualified. These are women who have all the rights just like us men. Gender empowerment should sit at the center…
Muza tasha. I know us Tongas how we behave we have a soft heart for only ourselves and Lozis. Qualified yes. But i tell 3 females of same competence can bring tgeir equall CVs and the tie breaker would be a Surname or roots.
I believe that the President has nothing to do with these appointment but, I am waiting to see his reaction to what is happening. I strongly believe that a number of people in his cabinet need to be fired already
There must be at a minimum some modesty. There is no way you can appoint your wife to a body of which you are Chair especially if it is a public nature. Muzinkalako na kaja kaciteci — aBemba akuti muzikwatako umwenso! A mambala. What is going on? Are we jumping from a burning, sinking boat into a crocodile infested lake mwati!? Iyayi anzanga. Let’s be a bit decent. Mufuna zingati????
The only plus here is that fraud Johnson Chikwanda who was previous chairman has been kicked out…I can see UPND being in a situation MMD was in where the economy was doing fine but all the poor could see was the false picture of the rich getting richer. This is how Michael Sata easily sold his message to the masses…
Even if qualified, this government should stay away from nepotism. There are other qualified people. This is the behavior we complained about during the previous government. It’s unacceptable.
They are qualified and competent, appointed purely on merit and nothing else. They are Zambians like any other and must not be sidelined on appointments, and stop linking these appointments to their husbands who had no hand what so ever in these appointments. They are Zambian nationals who are competent, qualified, and eligible
Congratulations Likonge for the appointment . Please keep on being innovative ..
If that is true then let them revoke these appointments and choose others. There are hundreds of zambians qualified for this appointments who are not related to any politicians. Share the national cake equally not everytime keeping everything within the family.
It is corruption to appoint relatives into government qualified or not, especially where this no competition. How many people applied to prove that those appointed where the rightly qualified? CHildren, wives, husbands for those already saving should not be appointed to anything. But they can apply for advertised jobs just like any Zambian. It is that simple.
Munir has a point. There’s an english word closely associated with the word corruption. NEPOTISM. It’s a vice and as dangerous and bad as corruption. UPND are on a slippery slope
She was an Engineer at KCM not a Director hence doesn’t qualify to be board chairman of a govt entity such as REA…this wrong and dont tolerate this scratch my back and I will sort you some contracts stunts. They are slowly placing people in strategic influential positions…these are seeds for corruption and should criticised and condemned now.
These appoinments are against good corporate governance practices and must be avoided. Qualification should not just be the criteria. Munir is right
