This is being foolhardy. Fred M’membe is a citizen of a small country with a vulnerable and struglling economy which is no big economy’s important trading partner. He’s not supposed to take sides in super power rivalries in this way. He has this illusion that if he became president of the Republic of Zambia he can make the country punch above its weight in international relations. It’s simply not possible. The Soviet Union failed to make Cuba build a prosperous economy despite massive support to the Carribean island.

Mmembe the praise singer for China and Russia. By praising the two external powerful countries, Mmembe hopes to attract gullible Zambian voters. Mmembe should be told that each country is there to safe guard its interests. In this context, Zambia has to make decisions that will safeguard Zambian interests as the country interacts with the West and with China and Russia.
