Lumezi MP Munir Zulu has been Arrested by Police Amidst Corruption Allegations

Share

Munir Zulu, Member of Parliament for Lumezi, has been arrested by police after failing to comply with several requests to present himself to authorities. Zulu is currently being detained in police custody, with a comprehensive statement to be issued on Tuesday, March 28, 2023.

This news comes amidst allegations made by Zulu, an Independent Member of Parliament, claiming that Finance and National Planning Minister Dr. Situmbeko Musokotwane and his Infrastructure counterpart Charles Milupi received US$250,000 bribes in relation to the Lusaka-Ndola dual carriageway project.

Speaking during a Media Briefing in Lusaka last week, Hon Zulu said he had information from impeccable sources that the two Ministers had been secretly appearing before the ACC, and that State House was aware of the investigations. Zulu questioned why the ACC was not updating the nation on the progress made, and tasked the commission to tell the nation why the matter they have been investigating for two weeks is not being availed to the public.

“If the ACC does not tell us where this money came from, we shall name the contractor who transferred $250,000 to each one’s account. We have the information. We are giving them a benefit of the doubt to tell the nation. Why is this information being guarded secretly? We have also received disturbing information that Engineer Mulchard Kuntawala allegedly transferred some money before he was appointed RDA Board Chairman through a bank transfer again to Hon Charles Milupi, and the ACC have been investigating the matter. We demand that the ACC must come out clear on Milupi and Musokotwane,” he said.

However, President Hakainde Hichilema has dismissed these allegations as baseless and without merit, accusing Zulu of being a “mischievous individual who tries to destroy innocent people.”

In response, President Hichilema has announced that his government is taking legal action against Zulu and has encouraged his Finance and Infrastructure Ministers to sue him.

President Hichilema, who took office in August 2021, has been vocal about his commitment to fighting corruption and reviving the economy, which has been struggling in recent years due to high levels of debt, inflation, and unemployment. In addition to his efforts to fight corruption and promote economic growth, President Hichilema has pledged to invest in infrastructure and social programs to address the needs of the most vulnerable members of society.

    • So far one allegation he made has already been proven as a lie. He said that the two ministers had been secretly under questioning by the ACC. Whn the ACC denied the story. Munir Zulu has remained mute instead telling us if the ACC was lying or not. Zulu has no freedom to make unsubstantiated statements against those he dislikes.

    • Zulu has no freedom to make unsubstantiated statements…So he has to be arrested? Is it a crime to claim that Finance and National Planning Minister Dr. Situmbeko Musokotwane and his Infrastructure counterpart Charles Milupi received US$250,000 bribes in relation to the Lusaka-Ndola dual carriageway project?

  2. This new doom government and it’s leadership are extremely wicked, heartless, evil minded.
Iam disappointed with the president …
How to you tell your minister to sue Mr Zulu! The best should have to ask the ACC to investigate the two ministers and not arresting a person that has exposed corruption.
    Something is not right.
I think this government is more corrupt than patriotic front anyway time will tell.

  5. I was litsening to Chilufyali Tayali’s recent face book page broadcast. He has equally raised serious issues against our UPND leaders. He has categorically mentioned our President, Musokotwane, Milupi and Paul Kabuswe. He mentions that these men have no integrity to talk about and that they can not explain their wealth. He says Kabuswe has eaten the black mountain which was meant for the youths and women. In his video Tayali is actually supporting Honourable Munir Zulu. The President must also instruct Musokotwane, Milupi and Kabuswe to sue Tayali. The police must also arrest Tayali for defaming the President. Lets who is telling the truth.

  6. Leave the boy alone! Why arrest him . ? He has not committed any offence against the people of Zambia. The issue is a civil case between him and those “two noble men”. Its them to take him to court. Does he have sleep in cells for that?

    • Next time I witness an offence being committed I will not bother to report to the Police, lest I get arrested.

Lesson: If I should ever witness an offence being committed, or if I should have solid evidence in my possession pointing to a crime, I will not dare report it to the Police, lest I get arrested.

  7. Looks like our police only know how to arrest. What happened to investigate then arrest and charge? Better still, shouldn’t they arrest the whole group that Hon. Zulu chairs since the evidence was given to them as a group?

  8. And someone says things have changed for the better… anyway improvement is relative. Why arrest someone on a matter that borders on civil defamation? All this talk about fighting corruption is all anus wind just aimed at silencing critics. Time is never on one person’s side.
Why should the president take it up when those who have been accused haven’t acted yet. How does the president know whether his minister received that money or not. Why can’t he wait for the whole story to unwind.

    • Of course things have changed for the better. For example, Faith Musonda doesn’t have her, wait for it, K65 million and mansion. Not even a constituency as big as Matero gets K65 million as Constituency Development Fund per annum. A PF official is reported to have sunk, wait for it 21 boreholes on a farm which has since been abandoned. What is he running away from?

    • Situmbeko Musokotwane is taking legal action. Soon we will know what the truth is and not the PF truth being banded around. Musokotwane knows that I cannot stand with him if he’s corrupt.

  9. The anger with which the President has reacted to Munir’s allegations suggests that there’s substance in what the latter is saying. Is this Kuntawala the same chap that worked for Celtic Transport? I don’t see those trucks nowadays

  10. The ugly face of dictatorship is appearing in this nation. He has failed completely to fulfill his promises. Now, he has resorted to arresting political opponents. His ,14h dollar stability, has failed to materialize. A liar who ascended on the throne through hoodwinking the masses. Munir Zulu is exposing his fake corruption fight. He is fighting people who have information on his crooks of ministers.

  11. There’s no doubt about that. I somewhat believe Munir has evidence but he knows that revealing it now will jeopardize his fight.
Why would you put someone in cells for a civil case, and why is the president who hasn’t been mentioned get involved. He should let those individuals fight their battles.

  12. Someone by the name of Sundano blew a whistle on Dr Sichembe and other officials. This whistle blower was not arrested while the people she reported have been arrested. Funny enough these individuals are from north and east of our country. Munir who’s from the east blows the whistle on the sacred cattle and instead he’s arrested while the sacred cattle go on with their grazing.

  14. We have mentioned it in the past, that integrity is a self due diligent assessment of one’s character. What is displayed to the public vindicates that character. In the case of Mr. Munir Zulu and his ascension to a public office has been and will remain clouded with deception. Challenged before courts of law, proved worthless, evidence could not be adduced before courts that he was worthy to be a parliamentarian. In the court, not even an iota of evidence was produced. However, our Zambian courts awarded judgement in his favor. Evidence speaks louder than words. Munir Zulu has no evidence against the two ministers. May be he prefers to be in jail than avail evidence publicly. Its his choice.

  15. Reading the comments above I’m convinced that we are in our economic predicament because we have a majority mindset that dwells on reactionary politics rather than economic development…how can we develop like this? Everyone is here talking about Munir Zulu’s allegations. As much as it is important to discuss this matter there are many other equally important subjects that have been discussed in the many articles on this news outlet. More critical above all is the debt restructuring impasse but no people what to dwell on flashy politics.

  16. We used to be beaten for telling lies in our child hood. I expect the same to happen to any child who is telling lies like the case with our boy now. I am not UPND but i dont sympathise with people economic with the truth, you think if this boy had evidence he would have kept it in his chest, no ways, and it appears he was a boy who was never panel sorted in his early child hood looking at his language in parliament. Please cage

  17. Munir has accused the two gentlemen in their capacities of occupying those offices. It is wrong to start to use government machinery to deal with him. Let those characters deal with him through the right processes. The police should have nothing to do with that kerfuffle unfolding before our eyes. Kanshi ma Africans mulibwanji? Just step aside and let the investigations go ahead. Muzakabwelelapo ingati you are found innocent. Yaba! Kuli vuto ndipo.
