UN Calls For Emergency Aid To Zambia

Share

The United Nations has called for emergency humanitarian aid in Zambia due to the El nino induced drought, which has destroyed almost half of the country’s staple corn crop.

According to the UN Children’s Fund reports that more than six million Zambians, half of them being children, have been affected by the drought.

Speaking at a media briefing, UN Assistant Secretary General Reena Ghelani says two million crops have failed and six million Zambians are in need of food supplies due to the drought.

And Ms. Gheleni who is also the UN Climate Crisis Coordinator for El Nino said the amount of crop failure that the country has faced is very devastating and leaves many people in need of food aid.

Ms. Ghelani has called on the international community to respond quickly to avoid further damages. She stated that the government has responded quickly by releasing food from its strategic reserves but there is need for external help to fill the gaps.

Speaking at the same event UNICEF Regional Director for Eastern and Southern Africa Etleve Kadili fears that the drought might cause a huge impact on children in Zambia.

Ms. Kadili charged that the drought is likely to affect nutrition for children which might result in stunting if the crisis is not handled quickly.

    • @tikki, drought affects food supply, not alcohol supply.
Even in Gaza there is starvation, go to YouTube you see guys wounded with bottle of beer in hand.

  2. This is what the Muzungus loves to do. Donating food to hungry Africans. Through IMF FISIP has been frustrated. And which reserves did government release. The government sold everything and they are asking for help from countries they sold maize to.

  5. In abundance of water a fool is thirsty….and we wonder why the rest of the World laughs at Africa….like TIKKI said….Emmergency UN aid to a country where tarvens are always packed and beer manufacturing companies are flourishing….mind-boggling isn’t it….we have a huge cabinet with unnecessary Ministries….unnecessary positions at the State House….and we have reduced ourselves to beggers…imagine if this was Lungu begging for aid….i remember Lungu refused aid from the west

  6. Ethiopia is doing much better without a single drop of rain….Dubai is a desert with only 20 days of rain in a year…and here we are rushing to the UN with a begging bowl begging for handouts…..Professor Lumumba is a genius…..they bribe African leaders with aid and walk away with our natural resources worth trillions

    • Do you know how Arab Emirate is rich? Their GDP is $27.36 trillion. Zambia is only $70 billion. By the way Dubai is a city in the Arab Emirates (UAE).
Agriculture in UAE is technology dependent and mainly grows vegetables and fruits.
So before you expose you ignorance, research first.

  7. Is it not amazing how Zambians are fond of complaining? Now complaining of getting UN emergency aid due to drought. Tanzania is offering to sell some maize from their stock. People are still complaining at they are selling the maize we sold them.
Zambians have been advised to add other starches to their diet like Sorghum,Millet, Rice , Cassava ,Sweet potatoes etc. Iwe lyonse ubwali 24/7 .

  8. Zambia is in the news for the wrong reasons again. This is extremely embarrassing and totally unacceptable. It displays poor planning on the government level. 60 years after independence, Zambia is still walking around with a begging bowl? We should’ve been a developed country by now, with all the natural resources we have. HH and his team have no clue what they’re doing. They need to be voted out, come 2026.

  9. “Speaking at a media briefing, UN Assistant Secretary General Reena Ghelani says two million crops have failed and six million Zambians are in need of food supplies due to the drought.”
Does anyone understand this “ Two million crops have Failed” out of how many crops?, and which crops are these? Where is our “god” he is quiet planning for the next scheme of selling Govt assets. He does not even understand that yesterday he was telling his opponent that climate change should not be used as an excuse to failure to plan! What has changed?? Insoni e buntu.

  10. Impeach the cow herder for mismanaging the economy. He is too expensive to have at the top as he attempts how to run a country

  11. Some young man recently told us that Zambia has become like Somalia, a war torn country. We threw him in jail and threw away the keys. Now we are busy begging the world for emergency aid. Who should be in jail?

  12. This is how they control you and reduce you to beggars whilst your precious resources vanish in thin air. If you can trust them, let it be at your peril.
