Chiluba may stand trial by video link

Share

1_221004_1_2.jpgFormer president Frederick Chiluba may stand trial for corruption by video link due to ill health, a spokesman for the ex-leader said on Friday.

Chiluba, who is due to travel to South Africa for medical treatment, has been told by a Zambian court to return home by August 13 to resume his protracted trial the next day, spokesman Emmanuel Mwamba said.

Mwamba said Chiluba was due to inform the court whether he would stand trial by video link after Zambian doctors advised that he was too ill to be present in person.

“Dr Chiluba will inform his lawyers what they should tell the court after the court gave him an option to stand trial by video link or to be present in court whatever the circumstances,” Mwamba told Reuters.

Chiluba’s graft trial involving allegations of theft of $488,000 in Treasury funds during his decade-long rule which ended in 2001 has created major controversy between state prosecutors and his lawyers.

Prosecutors want the former president to stand trial despite having a cardiac problem, while Chiluba and his lawyers had earlier argued that he cannot be forced to appear via video link as it would impinge on his right to be physically present in court.

Last week, doctors advised him to seek immediate medical treatment in South Africa after he became weaker, but the court only allowed him to travel on Friday following earlier objections from state prosecutors.

Chiluba is simultaneously fighting a London court judgement which ordered him to pay back $58 million it said he stole from the national Treasury in a civil case Zambian authorities lodged in Britain.

Chiluba has argued that the British case was essentially fraudulent and promoted by former British Prime Minister Tony Blair and Zambian President Levy Mwanawasa in an attempt to make a point about graft in Africa.

  1. Well, the ball is in his court. Let him return the money and the show will be all over in no time and he will live with is new wife happily ever. He can keep his high heeled shoes though. I don’t think we shall ever trust a short president again.

  2. What he needs is to simply humble himself and apologise for stealing OUR money. Maybe, just maybe, we might forgive him. But knowing Chiluba, he will prolly not do that, he is too stubborn.

  3. I have been advising this Kama-Chap KaKafupi to start attending court cases instead of pretending to be too ill to answer to the charges. Kafupi’s heart condition is chronic and therefore should not deter him from normal activities as long as he gets his intervention medication.
The trips he makes to RSA are just routine checks like what every other patient with such condition would be required to do.
I am sure kafupi performs some strenuous exercises in his bedroom with a live machine. Too much Viagra Kamudala..

  4. 1. Hear, ye children, the instruction of a father, and attend to know understanding.
    2. For I give you good doctrine, forsake ye not my law.
    3. Hear, O my son, and receive my sayings; and the years of thy life shall be many.

    5. My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings.
    6. Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart.
    7. For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh.
    8. Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.

Who didnt observe all this? Dany Pule, Kasama Father, Singongo, of course our man F.., ZAAA chief Commander

  5. #4 Mwaice HK leka ukusabaila just continue with your article on fiber/wireless, have respect to the elders , this man is not your age mate , he fits the status of your father.Come on be serious.I should find the article ready on Monday.

  6. KUKU, That is abominable, Kafupi being my BALI?. I would rather have a Father who sells Malasha and have dignity than a ‘stinking’ Bali bastard like Kadoli.

On the Fiber/ Wireless, I thought I made my self clear on SAGE’s article.
Subs Access Network- BTS, P2P& P2M lince/Unlic: WIMAX, WIFI , Bluetooth, DSL, Access Nodes(Hubs or aggregates): QoS Various base on Vendor/Operator
Transport/Transmission- VSAT, E/S ,Fiber, Lease lines, Microwave, suitable Radios:QoS desired higher.
Core Network/Core IP and Switchng and Voice Servers, MSc, cBSC, IN, Commercial Network :QoS: Preferred Superior.
Gateway: VSAT, E/S, Microwave, Fiber: QoS International, Compression, third party.

Basically, using the above segregation you can evaluate where Fiber construction is more viable compared to Wireless, and can do a Pro/Cons for both cases. But in every case stay within the Network Layer you are comparing and contrasting.. Have I mad myself Clear my friend..I wont say any more.

  7. On the Zamtel/ZEScO Fiber project: There are three segments,
    1. The Proposed Metropolitan City Rings.
    2. The Highway Fiber, City-City interconnects
    3. The International Linkage.
Currently Zambia has three Major Fixed Land line Serv and Wireless providers, namely Celtel, Zamtel and MTN. There interest on Fiber is to increase there switching capability between their BTS-Sites and the Core Switching network. This will improve Quality of Service in both Voice, data, and make it possible to introduce the long awaited IP based services like IPTV.
My many worry in Zambia is the lack of genius or intention by Operators, Vendor and Consumers to push the technology to the limit and get the benefit of every drop, hence breeding people like SAGE who feel uncomfortable or become pessimistic on some investment.

Certainly Fiber and Wireless are far and Fiber in the front by just comparing outer limits. The commercial benefit are incomparable. The Challenges of operations can not be used as deterrant

  8. #7 HK, ala kwatako umucishi kubalakamba plz. If he fired you as an incompetent doctor plz HK learn to forgive and to forget. Ala kwana ba FTJ bachula pafula, for 6 years nomba case bababepesha yasanguka “kaleya mateo”. Plz finish the case bwangu pakuti bayikalile nakumatwi ndondolo.

  9. HK; it’s my MAIN worry, …not my ‘many’ worry…revise your JELITA and MULENGA and SARA and ROBERTS books and also grade one handwritting..

  10. Ka JOZE, Just advise your Kashikulu or Yama to start attending the court session. No amount of scheming will bring freedom to him.
Chiluba is among the least person I would want our future Generation to emulate. I would always support some School curriculum which teach his presidency as the things a President of this country should never do.
I just regard Chiluba’s presidency as lost time and lesson Zambia should never repeat. That is for the same reason I advise Chuchu to respect our people all across Zambia on the constitution, Twachula SANA being governed by Good for nothings and our patience and peace have been taken for granted.

  11. Wamuyayayayayayayayaa..PALI ICHIBUMBA APA.. WHAT HAFI U GAT TO SAY TO BAJOZE.
Your Kafupi is a good Speaker of English and you bought that shit thinking UKUlemba, No Kulanda Ichisungu bwino miniz Walinwa JOBU.
Just Look at Our Cbbge CHUCHU, the man is full error, but chilaposa JOBU, Zed nomba mwela, Nabbola twalitampa nokuwina.

  12. # Dr HK, iyo kwena wasata, nomba kwatako umucishi kubakulu plz. How would you feel ama-chapz (young ones)insults or your parents? Bad te? So ba kaamba ba HK nika advice nacilamigiva. Anyway no vundu. But respect bakaamba, they say charity begins at home (akafumbe ukunona; katula kubwaice) te? kapena ndimwe ba Chumbu mushololwa te?

Dr HK, tell Kuku nalavaya kuma order pa Que-que mailo. But dont forget ka respect kuli ba FTJ. You will be blessed if you do that.

  13. Ba Joze, dont worry HK and others are too young or too naive to remember our history. Its ridiculous to start heaping praises on Levy. Give us 5 major things of significance Levy has delivered?

  14. Indeed I hope no one is heaping praise on LPM because really he has not done much if you compare to the boom times we are in. Copper Price high, No debt or low debt, huge chunk of cash lying idle in banks, stronger Kwacha and nothing to show for. As Sata said in his last five years he has not even built a toilet in Lusaka. Exporting maize while our people starve due to high price of staple food. I think a better president with the resources at LPM’s disposal would have done wonders for the country. Now this guy has reduced the whole nation either to the level of either arguing about court cases, morning side clinic or the constitution while his fellow lawyers fatten their pockets with tax payers cash. For sure lawyers would miss him this My Injuction. The whole nation is in an Injuction on court cases and the constitution. What a country

  15. Guys, we should give Levy credit for the beter times we have had under his Presidency. But i would agree he has had a relatively easy ride compared to predecessors. I wouldnt go as far as insinuating that 1991-2001 was a lost time. Thats a savage assessment by HK.

  16. Bachiluba balilufyanya. So Bafwilefye babweshya inmpiya shesu.Ba Levy Namubomba and no should criticize you so much because you are doing good work. BA Joze when are linking up for some Chibuku?
HK Ulifye bwino mudala why watampa utufyongo?

  17. Bushe imwe guys are you real graduates? How do you measure economical development? Iam missing this especially from Dr. HK with´his FDDI Know-how he cannot use despite living in a develoed world.SAGE#16 There is nothing doubting about the achievements made by LPM. Remember 3 yrs ago he stopped export of maize becuase the country was in acute hunger. The last time I heard that Billions of Kwachas are lying idle in Bank account was in 1984 when the govt coffers were still full. We should see what is positive and applaud. FTJ inherited a sound economic but he killed everything SAP and stealing.

  18. If ci Kavindele didnt not betray the Zambians pipo Zambia could have been better than Cuba and South Africa put together.

Rather than KK, what good did your shortie add to this country besides raping her?

  20. Cyber-USA, Ukubabwino does not mean trolling in the same direction.
The good news Kafupi and VJ will linkup in JOZE, not BAJOZE Joberg.

  21. In Kafupi GRZ, that money found lying idle in the Bank account, would never been there in the first place. It wud have been in a blowuni envelope.
What Zed need to do now, is inject competency in the Civil Service and cleanup all the Chiluba stinking rubbles which are now running like rabbits and not knowing how to use the money except stealing it.

  22. It is good that bakulubaku balimu court, because before it was only the poor.Last week in the post Dr Chiluba told LPM ati you have more cases than me and has not answered back. They say only the crocodile know the imfubu every well.FTJ and LPM know each other very well.We the poor will just be watching from the window’s of the courts.

  23. Bane, Nalepula Manje. Nayenda muchaya Bbola. Exercise Bane , not Kumwa chabe mooba nakuyina moonga Chulu amela Chule munzake. Let us pray for Kafupi so that, he gets well and face the tune of our corrupt courts if left without populous threat. May he live long so that his shame maybe seen by the younger Generation and those to come .We need examples to point to .. There goes a man who raped our country and as if that was not enough, he even grabbed someone’s wife and God punished him by making his heart muscles weak so that he does not enjoy his loot..The man never confessed and sought forgiveness therefore his suffering.

  24. FTJ should pay back the money dead or alive we need it.He never use to foresee that what goes up always comes down.FTJ its time to pay back our money not visit Dr in SA you chased away.#17 and HK lets fight for our money back.

  25. Sometimes I wonder what Zambia you guys lived in before 1991! If you are reasonable and critical, you can give chiluba some credits! Just like any other reasonable person will give credit to KK and Levy. You remember the queues, don’t you? Dilapidated infrastructure, and minimum opportunities coupled with low initiative because of lack of exposure on the part of zambia to engage in creative business opportunities! Yes, Chiluba created many opportunities, sold houses and set the stage for house construction, liberalised the economy which brought the efficiency in the economic sector! He also failed on many fronts including corruption and that’s where we have lost it! Levy should have anlysed the failures and create creative solutions to move the country forward, however,he has failed to inspire and continues to claim credite which should fairly be attributed to Chiluba. He has not been very sophiscated in dealing with the country’s problems, including his very intellectually limited FM!

  26. FTJ, should be held accountable ….i do not care ! by whatever means possible? video link, audio tape i for one do not care as long as justice prevails! it is high time our greedy politicians become answerable to the people! chiluba Vs the people of zambia..that is what this trial is all about? one zambia one nation..wina azalila! FTJ forgot that money can’t buy everything….not even a new heart! the man is fit to stand trial!

  27. Number 26# what efficiency did chiluba bring to the economic sector! selling the mines for peanuts and buying himself high heeled shoes! creative business opportunities…. my foot! a booming economy (on paper) and yet the majority of zambians are suffering! i understand, we all measure success differently and I am pretty sure we are not on the same track! have a reality check, talk to people outside your comfort zone, associate with everyday folks, then tell us the many oppotunities that chiluba created?

  28. Sometimes I wonder what our country would be like if FTJ was to be the 1st president of Zed from 1964. 10 wasted years in the history of Zed 1991-2001. LPM can’t be compared to FTJ. There is some sanity in Levy. At least there are billions lying idle in Commercial banks. With FTJ was unheard of. I wish Levy was the 1 taking over from KK. FTJ has a psychiatric illness that is not yet written in the books of Psychiatry. HK! Will u please write it.

  29. I agree with #26 Anonymous. During the first term, the Chiluba administration grasped the nettle and brought in unpopular but necessary changes. Some of us remember the pseudo-socialist economy as it existed in Zambia before 1991. Setting up and succeeding in business then was considered decadent by Kaunda and his cronies. Successful Zambian businessmen were persecuted and often accused of being traitors. In ZCCM, expatriates were paid ten times more than Zambians. Expatriate nurses put Zambian specialist doctors to shame when it came to pay. Shortage of essential commodities was also the order of the day. When Chiluba came to power, he liberalised the economy and sold off unprofitable businesses. The result was the birth of Zambia’s economic rescue. I know it did not seem like that at the time but it is what was needed. Unfortunately, Chiluba lost his way somewhere towards the end of his first term and made a lot of deliberate mistakes. He is now paying for those mistakes.

  30. ..Cont’d from #30. Mwanawasa brought sanity to the country following the mayhem that characterised the last days of the Chiluba regime. However, history will show that the Chiluba years were not altogether wasted years. When MMD took over in 1991, the Zambian economy was at collapsing point. The party was over and all what was left were empty beer bottles and a big national hangover. ZCCM and other state owned enterprises had to go. The government had to carry out deeply unpopular measures. Unfortunately, those who ignore the pre-MMD era always judge Chiluba too harshly. The issue is not why but how privatisation was carried out. This is where corruption came in and tainted what was a supposed to be a historic turn-around for the Zambian economy. Had Chiluba not become entangled in corruption and the whole third term mess, his place in Zambian history would have been assured.

  31. I think guys imilandu yabena Chilus ileya kwati nikaleya mateyo, in the end he will be pardoned. A thief is a thief, we need to bring him to justice! But cacilamo nomba delaying otherwise nganifyo bafileke fye pantu emo ba LMP balecampenena so that MMD ikawine. So far LMP alebomfya amapolicies yabena Sata. Imwe guys ngamwalimuvotela umuguys limbi ngatwaliikalako bwino mwe twacula!!!!1 Nomba twaingila namuli ba China exploitation business, awe elo lwanya……. Ninani akatulubula kanshi???????+ Njafweniko ba Chitas naba HK nalila sana.

  32. Chitapankwa (30 & 31),
I can plainly say your article has indisputable facts about the Chiluba presidency. The man’s policies were what Zambia needed to redeem herself from the trough of economic and social crisis. Regrettably, he blew up that Golden opportunity of leaving behind a Generational legacy following the failure of Socialism after 1972. Chiluba started well but from the word go, the man was too susceptible to compromise at the hands of his sponsors who understood his tenuous economic background. And that susceptibility At large his Presidency was at the discretion of highly manipulative and mind controlling mafias in the like of Ephraim Chibwe the December 1991 US $3,500,000 furniture for plot one irregular buyer from the SA. Penza, Benjamin Mwila and league locked him in wasteful corruption. This issue has long given me questions of why Chiluba plundered that opportunity of making a landmark difference in advent of a cross section Good will enjoyed. I believe that the answers to that question about his failures and self ruin which started as early as 1992 is only realized with an understanding of the social forces that were at work on him even before he entered Plot one. We have to realize the interplay of his environment and his disposition that lacked the steadfastness synonymous with leadership. This a lesson to us advocates of leadership that not buying rhetoric but we must study the effects of some forces upon candidates’ lives, family background, education, economic conditions, and social status, as well as the particular events and the general circumstances of their times we know of. Time has proved to me that the disposition a person is born with is a more fundamental determinant of his behavior than the complex of extrinsic influences familiar.

  33. Whatever you say, I never credit anything to a kafupi. The 1st term MMD was a party from the garden Hotel resolution and rule by consensus. There are big names of wisdom in that era, which your chiluba purged to acieve his desired grandious life..not for Zed.The pank at that time was humble by default. he was poor, felt inferior educationwsie and everything you can call idiocy.
Who did not know we needed to liberilize the economy, Chiluba at no point was he a genious in anything except Political Engineering. Even Bashikulu-Kaunda had started restructuring.

  34. 10 years of retrogretion. HK! Could you rewrite the books of Psychiatry? The thug had grandiose ideas. Pragmatist! How can someone start comparing a thug FTJ to LPM a man of principles. I am not MMD though. Levy has brought some sanity to our nation. Bravo Levy. The thug was right in choosing you. He you would be his puppet. The Cobra could have been your puppet, but you ignored it thinking it had poisonous venom.

  35. CHITAPANKWA #30&#31…I wish to concur with your well articulated and informed objective analysis of FTJ`s tenure. Then Pragmatist #34 has summed it well on what we need to do to improve on the quality of leadership that we elect.I think the quality of leadership that we have is as a result of an uninformed electorate.Concerted effort should be put in educating the electorate on the need to have quality leadership. If we did that, then the Willie Nsanda`s will have no chance of representing us in parliament. These NGO`s and the Church in particular should start informing the electorate now and not wait for 2011 in the heat of campaigns to do so.

  36. Chapi # 37. You are right we need good leadership. The Kafupi fumbled. We need sanity in our nation. Levy has tried his best. But where can we get such leadership if we just condemn everything. Let’s give credit where it is due. Levy is far much better than thugs. If we can get someone more than Levy, we’ll be better. On thugs in State House.

  37. Ba Chitapankwa you sound more like an FTJ sympathiser. Upon FTJ assuming office yes saw commodities buck in the shelfs and there where no lines. 2 things fundamentally happened that brought about the availability of goods.
    1. Smagoling stopped because all of a sudden a zambian produced product was 200% more expensive than a product imported from europ or china. countries like Tanzania, burundi DRC only bought products like cement and agricultural products like ubunga.
2.While there was 300% rise in comodity prices ,there was a massive los of jobes due to un pllanned privatization. These are the two negative factors that led to stopping the lines at the shops.
The principle of liberalising the economy is a good idea, but you have to know what you are doing in order to mitigate the side effects of the exercise. As much as people can argue that FTJ made hard decisions that is now bearing fruit. Many people can also argue that in whatever he did he was soomehow a beneficiary.

  38. You guys talking about cash lying idle in commercial banks as a sign of economic boom are misinterpreting events. Here are some incontrovertible data whether you choose to hate FTJ or not;
    1) At 1991, Zambia was basically bankrupt and public services were moribund. I argue no exaggeration in comparing it to the current Zimbabwean situation. FTJ left Zambian better than he found it(am not talking about the 1970s-80s). KK left poverty at 71% and FTJ left it at 69%, so no major change there. But if you look at public services (health, education, transportation), FJT scored better. Those who worked at UTH or travelled by UBZ will be lying to deny this.

    2) FTJ presided over a radical economic reform program that reduced inflation from 200% to 26%. Exchange rate was controlled and it failed.

3)KK tried and failed to implement these reforms. Remember 1986 riots and Luchembe coup

    4) FTJ privatized all the companies that were a source of inflation and declining national productivity

  39. Comparison with LPM;
    1)Inflation down further from 26% to 12%
    2) Much stable exchange rate, largely because of HIPC and mines. But remember the critical milestones for HIPC and the IMF PRGF were all achieved before 2002.
    3) Money is lying idle at commercial banks because of HIPC. Before 2004, GRZ used to borrow cash from banks to settle external debt and our domestic debt ballooned. Its nothing to do with real economic expansion.
    4) The new mines and a good policy on agriculture have boosted national economy.
    5) Massive growth in global aid have boosted GRZ coffers and helped service delivery. Virtually all programs in Health are funded by Global Fund, PEPFAR and others.

Point is, the climate is far more conducive after HIPC.
Finally, we give LPM credit, but to suggest FTJ did nothing is simply unintelligent. Lets see if teh FTJ haters can give us facts not emotional outbursts, as we dont know why they hate him.

  40. Guys before we make comments i suggest we do a bit of reading on the subject. There were never empty coffers when FTJ come into power. They coined that term in order to hoodwink us from holding them accountable for their failures. Goverments operate on cash flow ok, when they are making a budget they base their badget on projected income from TAXES. If the projected income equals the budget you have a balanced budget. if your budget is less than the projected revenue you have a supplas. GRZ collects money everyday. So how does someone tell you that the coffers are empty and you believe? Folks this is the definition of inflation: A persistent increase in the level of consumer prices or a persistent decline in the purchasing power of money, caused by an increase in available currency and credit beyond the proportion of available goods and services. If you have more than 80% of the population un employed with no purchasing power, of course you will have goods in the stores.but at that CTN

  41. In Zambia the terms inflation, GDP, Interest rate etc dont mean anything they are just academic figures. The dollar exchange rate in Zambia is far more inportant than the inflation rate and the GDP.
Francis … You are taking a very simplistic approach to a complex subject. The fact that GRZ reached the HIPC does not necesarily mean now GRZ has $100M to spare evry year. These guys dont even know how much and what we need to stimulate the economy. LPM talks about agric. Good speech , but what is the plan(ZERO,ZUICH,NADA) Aliye pulani.

  42. SAGE, I hear your point this is definitely a complex subject. My intention was to put factual context to the debate about KK, FTJ and LPM presidency. And the most common approach is to quote official economic indicators. Am not claiming that these are the only criteria by which we make judgement. But I would like to hear an alternative framework of comparison from the other side.
Secondly, I dont understand why you think GDP and inflation dont mean anything. Why do you prefer the exchange rate which refers to a narrower segment of our economy namely traded sector?

  43. The fact that GRZ reached HIPC means that they dotn have to spend $300,000 each month to settle debt. This has proved significant in giving GRZ extra funds to give agriculture, transportation, health, education, etc. Facts on the grounds indicate that this has been crucial for reducing domestic borrowing and lowering interest rates and inflation, and of course a downward pressure on the exchange rate. Hopefully we get more real improvements in the economy over time.

CSO stats show that Levy’s plan on agriculture is already bearing fruit. Not just the bumper maize harvest but also total growth in agricultural investment

  44. I’m glad you pointed out my reference to exchange rate. right now the Zambian economy swings by the ER. If the rate to dollar increase from K4.5M to K6M. the whole economy shakes prices increase and jobs are lost. Yet all the other factors my flactuate up or down with ZERO effect on the economy. The most importatnt thing to remember is that there is a disconnect between GDP, Inflation and all the important economic indicators. Thats why i said they are “academic” because they do not reflect the true picture of the economy. For example wether the APR goes up or down it does not matter because less than one percent of the population can get a loan. and those that can dont need it. My point all these indeces are academic because they are “fabricated”

  45. Thats quite a strong critique SAGE. I do share the point that the computation of these stats is often problemmatic.
I also agree that an unstable exchange rate can distort an economy. All exchange rates fluctuate. But they fluctuate even more disastrously if they are in high values as teh case in Zambia. And if the policy makers tinker with them! All economic variables become more volatile when they assume higher orders of magnitude. (e.g. ZMK4000 to $1)

However, I dont agree that we should substitute a conceptually relevant variable with an irrelevant one just because the right variable is measured with great error. My professinal inclination is to rather have a slightly poorly measuerd GDP than a perfectly measured wrong variable.
Infact the argument of the exchange rate goes the other way. We adjust GDP in US$ figures by assuming that US$1 can buy exactly the same bundle of goods or services (Purchasing Power Parity). Because of the distorting effect of official exchange rate

  46. Iam sorry SAGE and Francis you are misleading and missing the point. Inflation cannot only be indicated by the flactuation of exchange rate, norrow the more available goods in shelves and increase in monies on the capital. Inflation is when you get a Bag of funds to buy a banana, when people have no jobs and starving to death in thier homes. What causes this? clear its the increase in the prices of essential comodities like fuel or when their is a shortage. This is the weapon of the west they use firms like BP, Total etcs. SAGE trial to be realitic and give concrete examples like there in UK where you are what did the all the british govts did to curb this problem. Another example is Brazil what have´they done stop inflation. No matter what you say Chiluba wll go down in history as the waste leader Zambia had. Yes Zambia went thru what Zimbabwe is going thru becuase the west want at all costs to have regime change. This time will not achieve it because we know their tricks

  47. SAGE your arguments are somehow misplaced and just shows your lack of understanding of terms, and you seem not to have put much thought into what your were writing. Do you understand what makes up a budget, its not just the income and as such can not compare the income to budget, the budget is run on Income Vs Expenditure, any excess is as a result of Income being greater than Expenditure and vice versa.Penza adopted a cash budget as a means to bring fiscal discipline to govt resources, hence you cannot effect and expense unless you are a corresponding income to cover it. And here are some of the economic indicators of any economy in addition to what Francis was trying to say and its true the fact that we qualified for HIPC meant that we will have excess forex in our account at BOZ becoz the terms meant not servicing those debts on schedule for a while

    Gross Domestic Product (GDP)

The most important indicator is the GDP report. Basically, the GDP is the widest measure of the state of the economy .The GDP is the aggregated monetary value of all the goods and services produced by the entire economy during the year (with the exception of international activity.) Generally, the Zed. economy grows at around 5% per year and deviations from this range can have a significant impact. Growth above this level is often thought to be unsustainable and a precursor to high inflation,

    Consumer Price Index (CPI)

The CPI is the most widely used measure of inflation. The report is released each month and reflects the previous month’s data. The CPI measures the change in the cost of a bundle of consumer goods and services. The bundle includes many types of goods and thousands of actual products, ranging from foods and energy to expensive consumer goods. The prices are measured by taking a sample of prices at different stores. In addition to the overall CPI number, it is important to also look at the “core rate.” The core rate excludes volatile goods like food and energy and gives a closer measure of real inflation

    The Producer Price Index (PPI)

The PPI is one of the two most important ways to measure inflation (along with the CPI). The index measures the price of goods at the wholesale level. So, while the CPI tracks the cost paid by consumers for goods, the PPI tracks how much the producers are receiving for the goods. There are three types of goods measured by the PPI: crude, intermediate, and finished.

    Employment Indicators

This includes the unemployment rate (the percentage of the work force that is unemployed), the number of new jobs created, the average hours worked per week, and average hourly earnings. Note: the work force is not the entire population; it is a subset of people that meet certain criteria. The unemployment picture is a key gauge of the health of the economy while the average hourly earnings figure impacts inflation.

    Employment Cost Index (ECI)

The ECI is another important measure of inflation, measures the cost of labor including wages, benefits, and bonuses. The reason the ECI is thought to be an indicator of inflation is that as wages increase, the added cost is often passed to consumers shortly thereafter in the form of higher prices (inflation).
    Retail Sales Index

The Retail Sales Index measures goods sold within the retail industry, from huge chains to small local stores, by taking a sampling of a set of retail stores across the country.

Francis well done for that info on #41&42

    And many more

  48. Kuku, Easy… Read what i said at #40 and follow the discusion before you start mis understanding me. You can not compare Zambian economic indicators which are fabricated to that of UK,USA etc. All i’m saying is the words Inflation ,GDP etc are academic in Zambia. they dont mean much because they do not reflect the true picture of the economy.

  49. #52 SAGE All what my interested´in are solutions which stop the suffering of the people. So before I posted I read thru your postings. This is the reason why you are misdirecting because you want to say Zambian economy cannot be compared with that of UK yet you are forgetting the same Zambia has been supplying UK with minerals like copper, steal, zinc, cobalt at no prices. This is no academical but real please reflect on this because. In simple term what is more value for you tomatoes, cabbages, sweet potatoes, meal meal, sugar, mupilu or Gold? Under the essential needs in life and the start of trade also how did money became a medium of exhannge and who defines which currency is stronger than the other what happens when there is a shift. Which factors influence the an economy? You cannot rule out Zambians are not consumers like those of UK. GDP is there in Zambia. The problem is that we are not an island we belong to this earth and we cannoe isolate ourselves from the systems that we

  50. ctd. was created to benefit a small group of pipo. Look at the reachable countries like Singapore, SA, Brazil, India, China what what they doing to fight the greed west.

  51. #52 Even you analysis on #40 doesnot tie to the real truth.SAGE anywhere in the world these indicators are the only economic indicators the Exchange rate just blends in.Try to read widely, to undertand things the fact that you are in the USA log onto BIEGE BOOK UNDER THE FEDERAL RESERVE WEBSITE, as for the Zambian economy these are available from Ministry of finance& economic development, budget addresses,Economic reports,Apex annual reports-BOZ,I reiterate please read widely and argue on facts not assumptions.

  52. SAGE here is the definition of your Exchange rate so how does it measure your economy?
In finance, the exchange rate (also known as the foreign-exchange rate, forex rate or FX rate) between two currencies specifies how much one currency is worth in terms of the other.
The foreign exchange market is one of the largest markets in the world
The spot exchange rate refers to the current exchange rate. The forward exchange rate refers to an exchange rate that is quoted and traded today but for delivery and payment on a specific future date.

  53. I think Easy is really misunderstanding the debate i had with SAGE earlier. The points were not about definitional issues. We were debating measurement and therefore validity and practical use of those variables.

Now, Easy inflation is a phenomenon that arises from money suplpy exceeding real production of goods and services. The exchange rate does impact inflation because it creates whats called imported inflation.

Finally Easy, I have given you indicators of economic performance under FTJ, so give me your data to show why ordinary Zambians (not your biased view) should look at FTJ’s years as worse than LPM and KK era. I’m not getting any real analysis from any of you FTJ haters. And am not interested in empty sentimental expressions.

  54. Easy, Kuku. From what you guys are writting i believe we are arguing on the same subject from 2 different pespectives.
EASY..i don not dispute that Zambia exports copper Zinc etc… my point is the economic indicators are “fabricated and merely academic in Z. You cant talk about Single degit inflation when 680% of people have no income. If you read #40 you will see that i’m not supporting FTJ but saying that his policies where fraud.
Kuku… I mentioned the exchange rate because of how its fractuation affects the Z economy. I did not say its the only valid economic indicator.#50 this is not a discussion about terminologies but the validity of the so called economic indicators in Zambia.
Do not bring UK and USA economic indicators here theirs are as close to accurate a it can be . Ours are “fabricated”.

  55. #58 Okay SAGE what are your soltuions so that Zambia can start matching Britain and other developed nations it has potential isnt.

  56. I’m glad SAGE(58) posting same time as me has also clarified some issue here. But let me pick up on another of his point.

Fighting inflation always implies loss of employment (and increase in poverty) in the shortterm. But its a worthy infact inevitable sacrifice (FTJ told you this but its all over elementary economics text books).

What we have done now is to ‘cool’ the economy. This is why there are now signs of growth.

All these other indicators you are talking about are children of inflation. Nothing ever happens at inflation over 40%, let alone 200%. Everybody from investors, workers, unemployed, suffers (i.e. loses money) when inflation is high. So to belittle this achievement is just unfair.

  57. #58 You can not talk on something minus understanding what it means,I quote you from #44 ‘In Zambia the terms inflation, GDP, Interest rate etc dont mean anything they are just academic figures. The dollar exchange rate in Zambia is far more inportant than the inflation rate and the GDP’,how on earth can you say this?SAGE you are an enlighten person, what I have just done under #50 is to help you understand issues the way they stand. Its common to zambians to argue on issues they are ill prepared on,you worry me alot.If anything,I have helped many people in your boots

  58. Kuku.. Again the key word is context. What i was trying to say is you have 85% un employment less than 9% inflation K4.5M to a dollar. what does this inconsistant piture tell you as an economist.

  59. Once we take care of inflation, we start to see some of the people getting back jobs or being re-directed to new opportunities in the transforming economy.

I agree that we havet done a good job at mitigating the effects of unemployment. This is because FTJ had a pathetic job at agriculture. BUT, we already had 70% poverty with 200% inflation in 1991! So we cant lump it all at the FTJ reforms. We inherited much of the poverty and poor infrastructure from big Ken. ZCCM was already retrenching and not employing from the 1989.

  60. #63 write english , the whole thing does not make sense, see my write up ECI on #50 above and then ask me in a more elaborate way. What is K4.5m to a dollar????

  61. #64 Some how you are forgetting or is it that you lack economical background.Inflation has stages there is also Hyperinflation which you are trying to refer here. Dont define Zambian poverty like this because by then 80% of population were subsistences farmers you cannot defines that as poverty but maybe the best word is poor quality of life. The period you are refering Zambia had no inflation but deflation dont mislead popi. Deflation is when few goods chasing less money. Where were you in 1989 arent queueing for the post newspaper, times of Zambia, saladi, sugar, bread, Kapenta, 25 kg of meal meal. That was not inflation but deflation. Zambia had stagnation of the economy due to external pressure who want change in Zambia at the top leadership. They achieved this because Big Ken jacked them out of the ZCCM which they had been misusing. He formed Mindeco, Findeco, Zimco and ZCCM. Zambia would have managed to revamp the economy had they leaders managed to dislodge Barclarys Bank of ..

  62. ctd.. Zambia, Standard charted Bank of Zambia. These are key institutions controlling the monetary. The befenitiariers are Mercedes Benz and many others who need cheap minerals from these nations like Zambia.

  63. Kuku you are being petty and i dont know what you are trying to get out of this discusion. I have no time to waste om someone trying to base the whole subject on a typo. Discusion closed.

  64. Easy, you sent me laughing. Go and read a-level economics before you mislead people yourself. By no strech of the imagination can the 1989 situation be described as deflationary. In Zimbabwe inflation of 4000% is accompanied by empty selves. Are you describing that as deflation?
I told you that inflationa causes business investors to lose money, thats why you get no production and empty shops. Simple logic.

Inflation is calculated from prices of goods. So you need to have some transaction in order to have inflation, no matter how minimal. If too few goods are produced then the price has to increase. How on earth could this be deflation?
Blaming foreigners for our failure is a boring ploy! Ask KK (sadly Gibson Chigaga died) why he went back to repent at the IMF if he was doing fine with ZIMCO. Lets debate facts.

  65. #68 look at your question on #63, does this make sense to you? Iam just trying to help you articulate issues in a more factual and elaborate way not dreams, but if you find me petty well and good,Iam knowledgeable because I always learn from others and dont assume to be a Mr know everything.Good luck

  66. EASY you know that the exchange rate is K4,500.00. If you will base the argument on a typo i’m afraid its a waste of time.However,85% unemployment less than 9% inflation K4.500.00 to a dollar. does this inconsistant piture make sense to you.?

  67. #69 Francis, I also laugh because the situation in Zimbabwe can not be described as inflation its a perpetted inflation to bring down the leadership there. Open your eyes yes Gibson Chigaga went to repent at IMF because that what want my dear. Dont you know that money is power and you can make people worship you. I think you have been following war against the G8 and their policies. Those countries who have turned their back from IMF for borrowing are today well they dont have debt servicing problems. I would advise you to instead to do advanced economics especially at the perspective of Globalization.

  68. #75 you have just re enforced my point these figures are borgus. In Most african countries like Zambia where you have more than 60% of the people dont participate in the commerce you can have a picture pefect economic piture yet there is poverty anywhere you look. Again You can go on the internet the fugures are there but they are fabricated. They dont represent the reality.

  69. I think that many people who saw K4.6M to $1, knew that SAGE meant thousands. But those the errors you make when prices are in exponential dimensions. Cant make too much of it really.

Now, the UNDP compiles the HDI to try to address some of SAGE’s valid points that economic indicators can be misleading. And we know how Zambia ranks on those welfare based indicators. However, you will see that its not a coincidence that poorer countries by HDI standard are also poor by the traditional GDP score (the correlation is over 70%). So GDP are other economics variables still tell you something.

  70. Well, Easy Mugabe has some governance issues to settle with his own people first and then the west. Call it as you like but no sane person will describe prices increasing at a rate of 4000% per year as deflation. Whether this is caused by foreigners is not the point. Foreigners dont go to tune prices at gas pumps in Zimbabwe. Mugabe has chosen to close up his economy, no fault of Blair. Give me one country in Sub-Saharan Africa apart from Botswana, Namibia, RSA which is doing fine after going away from the IMF.

  71. #78 Francis, Yes Bob has some scores to settle with his popi because he has been exposed and the tryants sitting somewhere untouched are tuning the scrolls and drilling, grinding and pounding the Zimbabweans. How are the onwers of the so called gas pumps? They are not in the hands of Zimbabweans and you very well why Zambia has a Zamtrop Account in UK it is for this purpose. Any African leader who refused to be a puppet met the wallows of the economical commending powers. Do you know the new sanctions against Zimbabwe even their children who are studying in the west being now bein returned back to ZIM. The increase of the ZIM dollar is to weaken its buying power. Anyway Mugabe has be indorsed for president next year, We shall see how long it will take maybe the only exceed is for him to lose elections like KK. This will mean to have a false person and have a waste of time like FTJs era. Francis do pipo have the money to buy food or its not there. This is a new situation becuase of …

  72. ctd.. non succumb from both sides. I hope you know that Zambia lost 10 years I think Sikota Wina should right another book called 10 yrs without a president.

  73. You just totally failed to convince me with any real evidence about 1992-2001 being a lost decade. Instead you are talking about bicycles and t-shirts.

  74. 81# Francis, are blind do you wat happened during this period. You are being childish. Look at your man is isolated you mean if he was good and had done something good for the nation do you think all those who were clouding him could have not left him.

  75. FTJ was hopeless but he wasn’t totally so. His privatisation policy(even if done badly) is largely what is making Zambia now have the potential to attract foreign investment and to be said to have turned the corner. KK was even more hopeless because he killed us by printing money for civil servants all the time thereby causing inflation and killing the money economy The money went to UNIPIsts who spent all their time bootlicking. Cabbage is just doing what a normal manager is expected to do (KK didn’t do it FTJ didn’t do it) Anyway a nation deserves the kind of leaders it gets.

  76. #81, Francis once more here are the results you are looking for: excodus of medical personal, children started getting lessons under a tree, vehement increase in poverty, Medical Training schools, closed, Roads with potholes, capital flight thru swindlers like Italians, indians and ftj and his cronies. Worker redundant, no salaries for employees like teachers, companies closed, smuggling and drug trafficing, prostitution increased, councils colaspe, mines closed, the least is long.

GETTING CONVICTION AT ALL COSTS: A CASE OF FTJ ZAMBIA’S EX-PRESIDENT

Kaela B. MulengaWhen the Zambian government went full throttle to try and get the corruption conviction of Fredrick T Jacob Chiluba (FTJ) – a former Zambian president in a London court, many people including myself, raised some objections.

In our view, we did not see the necessity of using UK courts given that Zambia was still at peace and that there was nothing wrong – competence-wise, with our Zambian judges and the judicial system.

But in spite of these concerns, and regardless of the eventual consequences this approach might cause, the Zambian government went ahead with its plans. In their view, this was a good and popular move to take – because it would pin down Chiluba in a corner. Indeed, a judgement was meted out by Justice Peter Smith, who convicted FTJ.

The State Media, joined in by The Post – lauded this judgement as phenomenal. And certainly after that, FTJ faced the darkest day of his life.

But here is the problem: which has clearly surfaced during Chiluba and cohorts’ appeal. First, it is not only established that – important procedural steps were skipped, probably due to too much emotion and anger interfering with the administration of justice – but also that the reputation of the Ministry of Justice has been damaged considerably.

Second, the superiority of the Zambian Judicial System, once praised by Oxford University law school as ‘the best legal model on the African continent’, is diminished. Strangely, this is happening under the watch of a lawyer President. Strange!

To try and ignore the “preliminary issue” raised by the respondents’ defence – that Part 11 of the Foreign Judgement Act chapter 76 of the laws of Zambia was violated, is belligerence of the highest degree. There is nothing unconventional or misconception about wanting to apply the Zambian laws as stipulated in the Penal Code.

In fact, the President is and should be the custodian and guard of the Zambian constitution and its laws – whose government by nature, bears a fiduciary responsibility and is charged with the duty of serving the interests of the people. And that every Zambian is supposed to be equal in the eyes of law.

Moreover, when a country is at peace – such as Zambia has been, there is no point rushing to try Zambians (especially ex presidents) in foreign lands and then hope to transfer judgements back to Zambia. It is even worse when we discover that some parts of law were not upheld.

It can be understood, that those countries ravaged by war or civil strife, such as Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), can begin by seeking judgements in foreign countries then legitimizing them later in their own countries as soon as peace was restored. Since Zambia boasts of being peaceful, it is a mockery to revert to former colonial masters for guidance on matters which are straight forward. It would have been better to wait at least until after the Zambian judicial system was exhausted, and then pursue other avenues.

The fact that the government went ahead regardless, has other implications as well. No matter how you look at it, this approach will end up blunting our judicial system in the sense that once a precedent is set – psychologically, our judges will continue to feel somehow incapable compared to the British ones. This is because, for no good reason, British judges were found to be preferable (or technically more competent), to handle such complex cases. Otherwise, why would our government shift Chiluba’s case hearings to UK?

In some sense, this is also usurping the powers due to the Zambians courts. This is not a small matter.

On the other hand, should Judge Japhet Banda agree – technically or otherwise, with the government prosecutors’ arguments, it will be viewed by many, at least international legal and human rights observers – as an activist judgement. An activist judge is one, who directly or indirectly, tends to side with government fudging the true or correct interpretation of the law.

Good judges are those who pass judgement fairly, aided by irrefutable evidence and correct interpretation of statutes. What comes to mind as an example is the famous J. Simpson’s trial, when his lawyer John Cochrane snapped in court that – “if the gloves can’t fit, you cannot convict – you must acquit”.

By the same token, if Part 11 of the Foreign Judgement Act, chapter 76, was not abided by – no matter how strong the technicalities or semantics raised by Attorney General may be, Chiluba’s gang must be given the benefit of doubt in the court of law. After all, even before the trial began, FTJ did adamantly refuse to appear in foreign courts. Whether we like it or not, in the name of fairness, courts must now be guided by the principles of fair justice.

Failure to do so will put Zambia on a wrong course. In a “just society”, whether you are short or tall, black or white, poor or rich, old or young, and man or woman – you must be entitled to fair justice. That is, every Zambian should be automatically entitled to this fair treatment principle.

Had the constitution been framed sufficiently to protect the rights of people – this mental exercise we’re going through would not be necessary. In fact it can be argued that – some of the grounds for seeking a new constitution in Zambia are derived from the following:

Due to the immense powers vested in the Office of the President, opposing him even on matters harmful to the progress of the country could end up a scary affair. As a result, you end up with a coterie of presidential worshippers, including cultivation of a compliant set of judges. The later leaves society members, especially those on lower class ranks, vulnerable. No country prospers under a “yes Sir” environment.

In addition since the President’s Office, controls just about every prestigious job portfolios in Zambia and Foreign Service – every Zambian want to be identified with the ruling class. Those who don’t toll the line are often subject to intimidation of all sorts including prison terms – often delivered through party functionaries such as cadres and other out bursts.

But we know that anytime when people are not free to say their minds – everybody loses in the end. In societies where, democratic rights or principles are fully anchored, citizens’ insecurity is minimized. That ought to be the society that we strive for.

Thus, without fear or favour, let me say that – unless Chiluba’s case will be treated fairly and the law interpreted correctly, people might start losing confidence in the law itself. Neither can we say that, unless Chiluba is convicted, the war against corruption would be lost. But if Chiluba’s case will be concluded fairly, it could act as a deterrent against corruption. Because then, the message will go out – that if you dip your finger in the till, you risk going to jail.

But the calamity in Chiluba’s case is that from inception, the New Deal government’s agenda has been to convict at all costs. Consequently government officials and mostly lawyers have been acting to protect the interests of government, instead of the people.

This has been possible because the awareness of ordinary people, about their rights, is not yet robust. As soon as this improves, government will be held accountable and be forced to act within their limits.

Until then, government’s behaviour will continue to depend on the whims and wishes of the President – who commands considerable power. This is why Zambian people cannot wait to see the day when a more protective constitution will be in place. But that day cannot come about by itself. It is every Zambian’s duty to do something about it. The Kaunda’s wrestled the country from imperialists; we should not slumber and let it disintegrate due to lack of care.

    Kaela B. Mulenga

  78. Kuku,

Ba Dr.Kaela B. Mulenga is a disgracing lamentable failure in the academia world. He failed KK and UNIP as his Agriculture advisory team. He failed the Agric academia at UNZA. He failed to sell himself even among the most corrupt Chiluba regime hence aimlessly trolling in Canada and on the UKZambian site. at worst his personal family life is a mess.He is a man without vision, focus and moral conviction in life. Read more of his economic commentary then you will know his fabric of failure. The only article i have seen his competence in is the subject of “Exchange rates”.

  79. Easy, you wouldnt resort to calling me childish if you had any points. I was looking for quantitative data, not what you’re bringing on. I probably hate FTJ as you do, but am not a critical savage.

I told you that KK left poverty at 75% and FTJ increased it slightly to 79% 1998 before bringing it down to 67% as he handed over power in Jan 2002. So whats your point here, friend?

Go check the doctor and teacher to population ratios in 1990 and 2002 and lets discuss. Pupils were learning under a tree in 2001 while KK in 1990 had them at home. We had the worst road infrastructure in 1990 than ever.

Each time an economy is restructuring, jobs are lost. So if you ask me, I still believe it was well worth the 8,000 jobs we temporarily lost in ZCCM to be where we are today. We created far many more jobs in public transportation than you had in UBZ in 1990.

Once again, I asked for facts and figures but all am getting is loose, unsubstantiated talk.

  80. Why is that when someone fails to offer any counter arguements, they result to being personal?#85 KUKU posted DR Kaela B Mulenga`s analogy of FTJ`s trial.Check PATRON #86 counter arguement,or EASY`s reaction to Francis` analysis on FTJ`s tenure.Let`s add value to the blog by offering factual counter arguements and not just cheap Rhetoric and petty personal attacks. Please, tufuna DATA pa blog.

  81. Chapi (88),
You Blabbermouth slob, where do you get the credence to vainly acquire a human face with your dizzy heard here? Easy’s rhetoric on that Kasai thief is on the money while Patron speaks with sincerity on the Kaela Mulenga vagabond. Instead of you sanitizing your dizzy Joze aka Chatter box (27) full of insanity, vanity and despicable life time failures, you are trying to inhibit logic of sincere debaters. No wonder you are another one predestined to end your journey in places of trolling only when others are in exponential break through turning into time’s economic empires.

  82. #89 Kasanda, Thank u this chapi guy I failed to understand where is heading to. He want me to start going in details of how houses did chiluba give away, the number of schools which colapsed, jobs lost etc yet this is in black and white. He knows all he wants is to confuse us. Francis he believes in figures I believe on facts on the ground which are not be manipulated. Guys we should learn to accept when something is wrong not prolonging issues. I never hart FTJ but I sad of his conduct as president of Zambia, He is the worst leader I have know in Zambia. Especially when it comes to Carlington issue this makes me burn with fire because a leader who can diverty money meant to buy food cannot be compared to the devil

  83. Chiluba refuses to pay K1.5bn demanded by Mulenga’s family
FORMER president Frederick Chiluba has refused to pay the K1.5 billion demanded by the family of the late Benson Mulenga for the K10, 000 he is alleged to have obtained from Mulenga’s group life insurance over 20 years ago. However, Chiluba has offered to help the family with some money, though the help may not be substantial as he is “also financially struggling”.In an interview yesterday, Mulenga’s son, Buselic Mfula, demanded that Chiluba pays the K1.5 billion for the K10, 000 he obtained from his late father’s group life insurance at Zambia State Insurance Corporation (ZSIC).Buselic contended that Chiluba was on July 9, 1983 unlawfully paid K10, 000 belonging to his father’s group life insurance benefits from the ZSIC on a bank certified cheque number 215575 drawn on Barclays Bank of Zambia Limited, Zomba Road, Kitwe from National Union of Buildings Engineering and General Workers (NUBEGW) of Zambia Congress of Trade Union. Chiluba was at the time national chairman of NUBEGW.Buselic warned that should Chiluba fail to pay the K1.5 billion, he would take him to court demanding K12 billion.According to a letter from Buselic’s lawyer Paul Pandala Banda and company, Chiluba insisted that he never obtained the money in question but offered to help the family in kind.“We write to inform you that we were accorded an opportunity to meet and discuss this matter with the second president Mr FTJ Chiluba on the 10th November, 2006 at 16:00 hours at No. 23 (2b) Serval Road, Kabulonga , Lusaka. The issue was to determine liability. However, it transpired during the meeting which was also attended by Mr E.Mwamba, special assistant for press that: (i) the second president was not liable because he was given a loan by NUBEGW and not by Benson Mulenga. In any event, the K10, 000 loaned cannot be discerned as having directly come from the estate of your father,” Paul Palanda Banda stated in a letter dated November 13, 2006, “(ii) That the rightful party to sue is the union, if any. (iii) The case is statute barred having occurred more than six years ago.“However, the second president said that if it is help to be made to you, it must be made outside the claim and should not in any way be considered to be payment towards the claim, as such a disclaimer to ensue, except further that such help may be determined by the second president at his discretion and no amounts should be attached to it by yourselves. The second president also said that such help may not be substantial as he is also financially struggling.”Therefore, Banda requested Buselic to consider Chiluba’s help outside his claim to enable the law firm write to the former president to consider it.But Buselic said he does not want to be paid in kind but the whole amount because it was his father’s money and not a favour. He said when he met Chiluba when he was Republican president at State House, Chiluba told him that he did not have evidence to prove that he obtained the money. Buselic wondered why Chiluba would now be offering to help in kind when in the past he did not want to discuss the issue with him because he had no evidence.According to the minutes of the NUBEGW’s general council meeting held on September, 12, 1987, the members wanted to know if Chiluba had paid back the K10, 000 which he had gotten.“Sister Zambwe said that she wanted to get it clear on the K10, 000 which was meant for the late Mr Mulenga as benefits, before Mr Chiluba takes his seat. Mr Chiluba confirmed that he had talked to Mr P N Nzima on phone to organise K10,000 for him which he needed urgently and his plans were to pay it back as quickly as possible,” the minutes stated.“Mr Nyirenda wanted to know if the money was paid back by Mr Chiluba within the short time he promised and he further wanted to know in what fate the late Mr Mulenga’s family was. Mr Chiluba said that in his mind he wanted to pay back through his gratuity at that time and said the most pressing issue at hand was the K10, 000 and perhaps we should avoid discussing the issue of the late brother Mulenga’s children.”However, Chiluba through his lawyers Nicholas Chanda and Company in a letter dated January 3, 2006 in response to Paul Palanda Banda’s letter contended, “reading through your claimed documentary evidence, it was no where written that Chiluba received a payment on behalf of the deceased”.

  84. Iwe Chi HK, I have just read ur insults kuli bakateka, uli chipuba sana, waimya nankanshi pakutuka abakamba. Bwelela mung’anda baye kufunda niwe chichitongo. One of the important laws they give to men ngayongayo is respect to elders. Manji iwe HK sindiwe mwalalume ngayongayo. U are half baked man.

  85. I can see sanity gradually being restored after the spam from the so called Chatter Box (37 erased) and his imaginary battles. My message to such framers and their terrorist communication is simply unscripted, “I am above your subnormal thinking by capacity and skills”. If you want, sufficiently just challenge me in debates bordering on the Zambian destiny. I respect legally binding free flow of opinions and ideas in consistence with the Zambian constitution per universal freedom of speech chatter. Thus, will never be a party to any mechanism of inhibiting logic anywhere. Instead, I stand to sufficiently rebuttal propagated inaccuracies emotionally driven or other wise. I will forever use my God given talent and brainpower in independent analysis. I may occasionally browse through blogs, but mainly contribute my views on Mondays only due other value adding commitments a pattern frames have failed to establish. Now, personal to the chap impersonating my ID, “you are free to share the Pragmatist ID”. But be advised like my IP, am too safe to be messed up by your helpless sick mind. Not even your erased Arabic terror correspondence insinuating as coming from my secured IP is anything to succeed soiling me. Instead, you have proved unsophisticatedly vulnerable and desperate without self remorse for your apostate acts. I am a Global Citizen miles away from sweet home yet realistically too difficulty to be dressed some illegal acts by overzealous laymen out of your pervasively controlled mind type. I have just seen one article saying I must be a so called shushushu because in all my contributions, I have never vilified GRZ but maintained a path of silent Diplomacy. That is too childish; Smart debaters think over issues at hand and never believe in solving a problem by demonizing a person first before reaching out for a mutually lasting solution. Certainly, the misgivings of smart and self collected people always take defined routes while the weak and their Group think umbrage typical of truants resort to insults and baseless umbrage. To be dressed as a shushushu for my principles does not bother or endanger me. FYI, I personally have a lot of respect for those patriotic men and women of valor for their selflessness, steadfastness and strict discipline found on unwavering national loyalty. Had it not been for age, I could even have joined them in view of my absolutely outstanding background very cheap to verify. In summary, be advised that the powers for self destruction are all in our respective hands as individuals. Pursue your ways and you will squarely yield the fruits of that route. Hope to see you along the threads here intellectually engaged in national based issues than helpless diatribes. Peace

  86. It sickening to see how the stinkest skanks of Luapula are lining up to render support to the rotten prince of all Katangese Skanks, Chiluba! Mwanya, we want our money back you thieves!

  87. Wanya ndiwe chi #94 Lifa, you introduced insults on blog you will get them, u kwindi, u lisholi, muchilufumo chobe mwaisulafye amafi yeka yeka iwe utila kwina or kulya bwino kanshi nifi matuvi vilimo. F*** u in hell.

  88. 94 & 95, if you are empty in your heads why not crip-off the blog for the sober and level headed pundits? You need to line yourselves up for some sanitization procedure before showing up in blogs next time.

  89. come on guys……is this what the blog has come to.instead of discussing issues we are trading expletives!!

a word of advice….when you are insulted on the blog, do not give the person the satisfaction of a response, be mature and just put forward your comments on the thread at hand. look through the archives and see how exciting it used to be……not this rubbish that is going round !!

  90. #97 sorry bakamba I was so stickening and got carried away with chaps #94 insults and had to return back. Got ur advice.

  91. #89.KADANSA.Calm down and just offer your counter arguement if you`ve got any.Like they say,put up or shut up.I would definately be wrong if I said LPM has done nothing for the nation based on the fact he settled his personal debt from FRA(more than K250 million) using public funds and so many other blunders he`s committed. We`ll need to admit the good that he`s done and oppose any wrongs. In the same way, saying FTJ did nothing positive for the country is definately cheap Rhetoric and false just because of funds he allegedly misappropriated. If he`s found guilty in the criminal trial then he`ll need to pay for it. Let`s learn to be objective in our analysis not to be economical with the truth.

  92. The scent has become warm, the vultures are circling overhead and we can smell blood. Now we are about to get even

  93. 99# Chapi its good that you can give advice my brother Gods is not foolish this man you say he did good things for Zambia, why have popi turned their backs against him completely ignored him not only in court even his good friends. Remember in the bible there is a king called Nabucadeza who disibedieded God and he was sent 7 yrs to go and eat grass. I dont chiluba stealing mealing if he had set initiatives to avert the cooncurrent problems that were facing Zambia. I will repeat if a head of state can divert funds meant to buy food for the starving masses. I hold him accountable of this, I will not forgive him those he is human he was doing it with consiencness. He knows what he was doing. Now give us more details of FRA credit because we can ask the president even right now to give information. This is not enough the world is changing. FTJ is attrocities are inmerse and you cannot compare them with current leadership. Poltical leaders were being assaínted on day light.

  94. #86 Patron, if he was a reject in Zambia, how come the canadians have accepted him?Does it mean his level of thinking has been appreciated more by Canadians than his own people? That is why Jesus told his disciples about him being rejected by his own people, the very stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone of the building,or physician heal yourself, there is Kaela enjoying life better than you chaps. Its not about his personality,I brought out this topic because it has material which is debatable? When are some of you chaps ever going to grow up?Iwe Kadansa#89 there was no need to attack chapi, you sound like you were with Hamazongo before you came on the blog, sober up mwaice.#95 AM forget about this chap Lifa#94, these are the chaps who are always stealing from the Litunga’s palace, already is on wanted list, that chap cant go back to lealui,he he will be nabbed,so he is suffering from schezophrenia.

  95. Pipo who introduces insults on the blog are just bush products who can’t contribute issues of national interests. we spend time to contribute and listern from others not to insult that’s what makes this blog a blog of views whether we disagree but we respect individual views. Pansaka tapabula chiwelewele.Lifa muwelewele who wants to attack luapula pipo. calm down LIFA.

  96. Like him or hate him, FTJ has changed Zambia for good. Whether the policies were his or not, at least he provided the leadership for those policies to materialise. That’s why he must also pay for the wrong things under his watch whether or not they were done by him or with his knowledge, and many were without. Those who fail to accept that KK left us bankrupt, must have been in a coma at the time of his exit. As for corruption and financial(economic) mismangement, I wonder why Zambians shy away from discussing KK’s share. During the worst patch of KK’s reign and apart from duty free shops, simple things like Coke could only be bought from his wife’s supermkt. Anyway out of respect I won’t say much but challenge both LPM and his supporters to lower the bar or is it lift it up to investigate the era before FTJ as well as his current era. In a nutshell only say that we shall see when he leaves. Right now he has the influence to silence everyone. The only positive about his reign is that h

  97. The positive about LPM’s reign is that he has made the nation realise the need for upright leaders with intergrity. Dare I say God fearing. When Nervers formed the NCC, he was criticised for demanding too high a level of leaders to the exclusion of certain quotas with a blemished history. Too bad he cowed down and compromised to his detriment. Hope he can put his act together somehow.

  98. i know some leaders in the name of ukulwisha ubuntungwa muno zambia even when they did not even hold a gun they feel eba lwishishe abalwishishe abengi they are not even documented muleibukisha efyo mwalebuka kuseniseni for soap and milie meal what ever you say about bachiluba you are just ungrateful therefore you have become fools now you have all the transport iyo mwalikuchelelwapo kumachito namasukulu mwebo lelo nimbwe the best thing you can do is continual praying for zambia as before mwalaba shani bwangu buche kutila prayer brought about alot of changes in zambia pray for our nation and our politicians to seek the council of God ine nalanda epompelele.
