power-lineTwo people died while four others suffered electric shocks after being electrocuted by a Zesco power cable in Lusaka’s Misisi Township at the weekend.

Police spokesperson, Bonny Kapeso, confirmed the incident in Lusaka yesterday and identified the deceased as Charles Phiri, aged 21, and a 25-year-old married woman.

Mr Kapeso said the two died on the spot after they came into contact with a 33 Kilovolts (Kv) Zesco power line that fell after it got cut due to heavy rain in Lusaka.

The other four, he said, suffered electric shocks and were rushed to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) for treatment.

“I can confirm that two people died on the spot over the weekend after they were electrocuted by a Zesco power line that got cut due to heavy rain. Four other people suffered electric shocks and were immediately rushed to UTH for treatment,” Mr Kapeso said.

The power cable, he said, fell on top of the roof of the deceased’s house while the four who suffered electric shocks were passing by.

Mr Kapeso said the condition of the four was critical.

Zesco senior manager for marketing and public relations, Monica Chisela, has said the company’s legal advisers were on the ground to ascertain the cause of the incident.

Mrs Chisela said Zesco officials were carrying out investigations in the incident and would issue a comprehensive report in the course of the week.

“Our legal officials are already on the ground and we shall issue a comprehensive report soon after they complete their investigations,” Ms Chisela said.
She regretted the deaths and electrocution of the four.

  1. My sincere condolences to the be leaved families.ZESCO should not even touch the grass to compensate, the victims. It knows well how it feels to be electrocuted by high tariff 33 KV.

By the way was the house with the legal location elo niyaja mayumba which are built just below the pylons…

  2. Big loss 2 young lives lost just like that .How can we have zesco power lines passing over some1’s home ? some1 must pay big time for this

    • Spring, not with Zesco! they will simply heap the blame on the deceased and say…… there was an illegal connection! period! thats how they get away with such!

    • You guys don’t even blame Zeskolo, the pylons have been there before the houses were built there. So zeskolos point of view will be, “we told government to do something about that and here is the result”…you all know for action to take place in Zambia someone should first die, so tomorrow we might woke up to some demolishing going on. In kamwala people have been building right under that pylons and the person giving the plots finished only grade 9 and u can’t tell him how to do his job which he values so much for life let alone those MMD cadres doing so in misis..

    • Condolences indeed. However, something is not right here. The 21 year old young man has been named, but the 25 year old MARRIED woman has not been named…and they died in the same house! Si khani ya chigololo chabe?? It could have been an act of GOD, ka?

    • Think about it Baby C! Something is amiss here. And from the story and location of this hose, it was not exactly a four bedroomed mansion! Tu manyumba tuja nituma one room, ka?

  3. People died tragically here and Zoe thinks its funny. What is so copy cat about using the standard words ‘condolences to the bereaved family’? Did you invent the English Language?

  4. Ba ZESCO baza tisiliza pa last. First they want to kill using their bills as they try to hike the tariffs, secondly their lines are collapsing anyhow like Meridien & victouies bank which was for Rupiah!

  5. Nivao ivo. How can they build house under pylons just like those trading under the same at Soweto. In Zed we are not serious about health and safety issues. we have a “fikaisova” mentality for everything. manje “vaisova”…
